Subject: RE: Amazing Grace/Robert Schnieder(sp?) From: Suibhan Date: 26 Sep 97 - 07:39 PM Pete, I would love to hear the long history - the first time I heard this song was 1967, before it had become cliched, used in TV commercials, etc. A pair of bagpipers played it at my grandfather's graveside, in a beautiful country cemetery. I have often wondered where it came from. |
Subject: RE: Amazing Grace/Robert Schnieder(sp?) From: pete savage Date: 26 Sep 97 - 09:19 PM Suibhan: I have an electronic copy of the below referenced texts. If you'd like a copy, please send me an email at 'pete@ada.com' and I'll forward you a copy. Otherwise you can read the history at: http://www.flash.net/~gaylon/jnewton.htm A much less complete, and less accurate, in my opinion, history can be found at: http://www.wilsonweb.com/rfwilson/archive/misc/newton.htm From this second reference comes: "Newton's tombstone reads, "John Newton, Clerk, once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy." Bill Moyers did a special on Amazing Grace. Somewhere on the web I found: "Amazing Grace with Bill Moyers - VHS-NTSC #105865 Vision Video $24.95 Across time, oceans and cultures, "Amazing Grace" has endured as one of the most popular pieces of music in the English language. Its universal appeal inspired the acclaimed journalist Bill Moyers to tell the story of this song through the people who have sung it. Featured are The Boys Choir of Harlem, Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, and many others, who reveal the power the song has had in their personal lives. Complementing the artists’ comments is the superb British actor Jeremy Irons, speaking from the writings of the 18th century Englishman who composed the song. Playing Time: 80 minutes" I've seen the program on PBS and am looking for the tape. It's a great program that Moyers put together. Best regards, Pete

Subject: RE: Amazing Grace/Robert Schnieder(sp?) From: Ron Date: 26 Sep 97 - 11:18 PM Further information I just found out a few minutes ago. Bob Schneider is a clarinet player and the piece is all instrumental. Does that help anyone ? Where can we get a copy? |
