The Klezmer band played a new-years-eve gig in St.Petersburg, Fl. 7pm to 11pm in 35 degree weather.
After we packed up we went to a club nearby and got some food. We were there at midnight. We then went to a friends place to spend the night and the next day we had a HUGE party.

Okay, I, like, stocked on up on a few 2-4's of Molson Canadian, eh? And me and my buddies had this wild party, and we played rock music and desth metal and suff, ntil somebody called the cop0s, and then we all took off to this other guy's place, and he had a buch of funny lookin' hats and noisemakers, like, for New Year's, eh? And so we all, like did the countdown from fifty to, like, zero, eh? And we hadthe TV on and it was tuned to that thing they do at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto everty New Year's and the usual stuff, and we switched chabnnels once to see what was happening in New York, but the friggin' calbe wasn't working right, so we got some other channel. I think it was the shpping channel. Anyway, when the big moment came, whe all went nuts and blew the moisemakers and shook our beers up and squirted thm all over, and then we all started singing Auld Lnng Syne over and over, and then I puked.

After that I don't rember much.

It was decent, man! New Year's in Blind River. Be there or be square.

While Joe was mopping the floors, I was out there celebrating with the rest of the Harmony folks. Only I was in the process of coming down with what people call "the Harmony crud" since more years than not, some of us come home from camp sick and I am often one. So this year I went to bed at 12:30 and missed all the singing, dangitall! Most of my cabinmates came in at 4 a.m.
Here's what Joe missed. At 11:45, we close the concert, clear the chairs and the kids run up into the balcony with all the confetti that they have been making for the last five days, and we all count it down. Just after "three...two... one, Happy New Year!", the kids pelt us with handfuls -- and this year some bright soul dumped the button box into the mix. "Happy New-youch! This isn't confetti, it's hail"
Everyone sings the round "Bring it in, Bring in the New Year" and most of us do it wrong, so that the syncopation vanishes, something that drives Lani nuts. Ignorance is bliss, however, and most everyone else has a great time doing it.
Champagne and Martinelli's follow, and then a midnight snack table, and after everyone's been hugged and kissed enough, the singers go back to singing, the dancers to dancing, the jammers to jamming, and a few of the kids get parented to bed. Our 14 year old daughter stayed up to play soccer outside after the dance, and came in at 4.
Blessings, and Happy New Millenium, achoo!
Barbara

We had a party of three: me, my husband, and a dear friend. We made quiche; she brought Rum Cake. (yum!) We drank a little, then got sleepy and switched to Shirley Temples which were almost as much fun. Played silly games, such as Clue (Professor Plum, with the rope, in the ballroom). Went to bed around 1 a.m.; my friend camped out on the futon couch with our cats. Got up in the morning, fixed everyone a good hearty batch of oatmeal (that's porridge for you Brits) and talked till mid-afternoon. Never did get around to the champagne; it's still in the fridge.

Peter, your insights are wise. Yes, there is no sense in sharing this knowledge with my friend right now. He'll just have to go through the lumps and bumps of such a rough, rocky road.
Guess friendship kind of acts as a shock absorber.
Thanks for your kind words.

You know I never realized "until she spied his cloven foot/And wept most bitterly" were part of the lyrics to House Carpenter.
I would love to have a copy of your lyrics.

Sat about dry, walked doggie, and listened to the spiritual wailing of the Gib 6, the Guild 12, and the Fender plug-in.Not to mention the mighty Conqueror mandolin snoozing in the upstairs closet. All in cases, demanding to be played more. Though I don't do resolutions, I pledge to harmonize with the spheres more frequently: one doesn't get to be a player in order to stay silent."Day Blues" from the Spoonful's second album came to me as I was pushing my feet through the ice lumps yesterday, on the way home from getting the Times. Good tune. Snow on the way here again. I miss the rain.

In my version of House Carpenter (Child 243 IIRC) I think I got it from Richrd Dyer-Bennet, the seducer is a devil ("until she spied his cloven foot/And wept most bitterly") and the woman who runs off is carried straight to Hell, as the great ship went down, leaving the house carpenter behind, with the couple's baby.
I agree that raising a child as a single parent is not easy, but sounts pretty good to me, especially compared to her fate.
Bonnie, it's probably too soon for your friend to realize that he is better off without her, and far too soon for you to tell him that she will (probably) be back sadder but wiser, but both these things are (probably) true; that's the way I would bet. And my compliments to you for being a good friend. (although consistent with everything I know about you.)

Well if my friend's wife left her husband for the 'House Carpenter' then I figure what goes around comes around. I mean the House Carpenter sure got the short end of the stick from the fair maiden running off with her true love leaving him alone to tend to the baby.

Me and my roomate (my ex-girlfriend) spent the day planning for her father's (my former-future-father-in-law) cremation and memorial service. Then we had two cars die on us, so we sat around my dad's house (he's on vacation in FL), eating pizza (which I ordered from the wrong restaurant, and had to go 14 miles out of my way to get) and watching Power Puff Girls and Twilight Zone. Then I switched to CNN, and watched 5 minutes of what I THOUGHT was coverage of this year's new years celebration in Russia, but turned out to be last year's. Which truly pissed me off, because I got all excited when the news-guy said something about the Russian government 'collapsing.' (Me- "Huh?! What happened?! Where's a radio?!") Then my friend pointed out the '2000' on the screen... So, I'm a jackass.

And that's about it.

On New Year's Eve a friend and myself played fiddles for the dinner crowd at The Fort Restaurant. (www.thefort.com)We played tunes from the 1840's and earlier. Of course Auld Lang Syne fits right in there. We played the older melody and then followed with what everyone knows so they would know what the heck we were playing. We got done at The Fort in time for me to get back to a big house full of friends and family to ring in the new year. On New Years Day then I headed down to Colorado Springs to the Colorado College. They had a time capsule that was sealed in 1901 with the instructions to open after midnight 12-31-2000. So they opened it at 1:00PM 01-01-2001. Cool. I was there playing 1901 music with a friend playing banjos and bones and me on fiddle and mandolins. That was truly a historic event and one I felt fortunate to be invited to. They have more info about it at their website. (www.coloradocollege.edu) Happy New Year to all you 'Catters around the world.

Stayed in and brewed up a batch of stout with the wife. Drank quite a bit of ale in the process, too. At midnight, we kissed and went to bed. Got up in the morning with a horrible cold, which I'm still recovering from. Ah well, the rest of the year's got to be better.

the rest of my mob had a much better view.... Alan of Oz had managed to get keys to a luxury apartment right beside the Opera House, (to those Aussies online.. yes in that awful toaster that shouldn't have been built... *grin*)..... so Mark and the kids had a great view of the Opera House and the Harbour bridge........

must have been good.. the kids reckoned it was better than Disneyland........

Spent the evening with a couple of dozen friends: we went out for a wonderful Indian dinner at the best Indian place in the city (not that THAT's saying much *G*).

Then we joined 200,000 other folk watching the top of the oldest building in town blow off with the fireworks at midnight. Only 15 minutes. It was impressive, but I've seen better.

Then staggered home swigging from the jug of blackberry brandy someone had brought along. Nobody was stupid enough to try driving on Amateur Night (we're all pros *L*)

Pub in the Peak District, playing music (or playing something, anyway) and drinking fine beer until 4:30. Wish they could have rescheduled midnight - I got Myrtle the Turtle interrupted for the "Big Ben bongs". Ain't it typical - 1000 years to choose from, and the millennium has arrive halfway through me singing. ;-)

Oh, and playing in the snow as well. Good job we made the most of it, since the thaw started about 11 and the snow was mostly gone by the time we left the pub.

New years Eve; went down to a party of friends and musicians in Conshohocken PA (Indian name) about 50 miles away, played Southern and Northern tunes, sang Carter Family songs. Broke 15' before midnight and assembled in the living room. The host, about a decade ago, suggested that at midnight that the song of choice ought not to be Auld Lang Syne but instead hard Times, Come Again no More, which we all sang, from the heart. Home safely, and then to bed.

Hope all turns out for all. I had a quiet and friend-filled New Year's Eve, though under the weather a bit (me, not the friends, though, had they been, I'd probably not have noticed, since I was being vewwy, vewwy qwiet!).

Bonnie, you know what happened to the woman who left her husband for the house carpenter........

Mister and I were at home in our jammies looking at Dick Clark on TV, drinking a little bubbly. Laughed some, cried some, marveled at how fast 2000 sped by, hoped for improvements in 2001.

Yesterday actually was the best. I spent all day in my jammies and fuzzy slippers and did not work on any projects but My Own! Did not do any housework, did not cook (two words: Crock Pot). Got out my watercolors and played a little (I'm not much of a painter but never will be if I don't practice once in a while), made some jewelry with my new wire-coiling thingy, practiced at gold-leafing. May have finally mastered it. It's a pain in the neck but it sure is pretty. Watched Bonanza on TV (my favorite show of all time and now I have a new VCR so I can Tape It!!).

Happy New Millennium to everyone. :)

We went to a friends party in the big TOronto. The high points that I remember, lots of good beer, except for the Blue Light which somebody's friend brought, only ONE bottle was drunk by the following morning. A Chocolate Mousse to DIE for. Maggies 80+ year old Mum started Auld Lang Syne in a really LOW key, we did get the hand crossing right though. We then carried on singing etc.High points, two great singers who normally live on a boat in Vancouver, me singing Mad Tom of Bedlam to Goeff's Bassoon acc. Griff and myself doing the Boar's Head Carol with the Roasted Pig's Head Table Centre bedecked with Holly. My wife taking me to bed at about 5.00 am cos I was falling asleep in the chair. Why can't EVERY night be like that, Ah yes I remember, Life. A Prosperous, Healthy and Happy 2001 to one and All. JohnB

Well Tree decided that she wanted to buy a toasting glass for each of our neighbors. And she wanted them engraved with their names.

So we went out and bought the glasses and then went looking for some of that glass etching paste. We eventually found the etching paste but all the stencils we could find were too big so we bought some mylar and I cut a stencil that said

"The REAL Millenium"
2001

But the mylar was too stiff and the etching paste got underneath and blurred the letters. It was now three in the afternoon and we had to leave by six.

So I put a diamond bit in the Dremel tool and engraved all twelve of them by hand, with that message on one side and their name on the other.

At six, all of us walked up the street to the Polish club where they had a roastbeef dinner and an open bar. We ate and drank and danced 'till midnight. At eight minutes past midnight we wished one of our neighbor's "Happy Birthday". We hugged everyone and walked (as best we could) back home.

We had potluck dinner, music, and games (Boggle, Scrabble, Backgammon) with some good friends and some of their friends we had never met before. Good people all. We spent New Year's Day wishing we had gone to bed at our usual early hour and not been wasted all day from staying out too late.

We are considering having an Early Risers New Year next year -- get other morning people over for a pajama party, go to bed at 10:00 or so, get up at 6:00 and have a pancake breakfast.

We had decided to stay in and celebrate quietly - so Mark went to the pub for a quick one at lunchtime. Then the cat caught fire, which meant that Hammerite & I had to evacuate the house (due to the smell) and run down to the pub to tell Mark all about it. We were just on our way home again when one of the neighbours turned up & bought us a drink. So we called it fate & stayed til the end. We did try to get some singing going at the very end, but noone could remember any whole songs (too drunk) - it was good fun trying though. Anyway - the main thing is that the cat is alright - he's a really fluffy one (or was....) so it was just singeing really & didn't reach the skin at all. Still, at least I know what smells worse than a stinky old cat now : a singed stinky old cat of course!
Happy new year everyone...

Laphroaig??

hmm..well I still have a bit left in the bottle. It kinda wore out its welcome. I know some like its smokiness but I find it harsh.

My tastes run to Macallan, Glenmorangie and Oban, softer mellower scotches...

but maybe that makes a me a wimp?

A good friend, a lady who used to play cello in the Phoenix Symphony when I was CEO, and now lives in Maine was in town visiting her kids, and I invited her over for dinner. We had a good visit, then went to my favorite pub, The Dubliner, around 9:30pm. We lasted until about 11:00pm, but it was so noisy and filled to the gills with young college age revelers, we decided to leave before midnight. Drove to a nearby Denny's and had a good conversation over coffee. Didn't drink a drop of alcohol because I was driving and had a great time.

The Vibrocats played a New Years gig at a upscale joint, the Tabard Inn, near Dupont Circle in DC. It was grand, the place was jammed and crazy and the we were flat on it, but I was a lot older than most of the revelers, and they must have wondered how long this aging rocker could hold out. Why do I do it? Well we hold on to our dreams, don't we?

All the best to all of you in the new year, wish me luck, I'll keep on rocking as long as they let me, you do the same!

Bonnie you're a good soul, protect yourself in the clinches.

big hug to support you, chance

I was on standby at work--meaning I got paid a tiny amount to stay home and not go anywhere--played a lot of guitar, trying to work on a new song, lit a candle that a friend had given me and followed her instructions to meditate on what changes I would like to occur in my life over the coming year. In bed before midnight, but heard some fireworks go off. Up at 5:00am to get ready for work. Didn't know until later this afternoon that "wild youths" had torn up downtown Portland (OR) because for some reason the city didn't have a fireworks show this year.

I spent my new year's eve with two special friends in Las Vegas. We both were on vacation and watched the sky glow and sang karoake for the most of the night.

Ahhhh, the Leap Frog stuff!! ( I can't spell the real word either, lol!) Good stuff. Naem, glad you had a good time. Giac, the 16 yr old here hung out with her 22 year old brother so I didn't have to worry! He is a worse "Mother Hen" than I am. Wish I could come to the BD party!!! Next question is :

What Did You Do on New Year's Day?
my answer--It's Monday, so I did laundry!

Love ya'll!

For the uninitiated, "Leap Frog" is a pet name for Laphroaig, our favorite single malt. (Even better than Talisker, but I had to try them side by each too close apart to know for sure -- lucky me to have both in hand at the same time!)

It was a nice, rather laid back gathering that had time for conversation as well as music. And its continuation before, during and after brunch today was a lovely way to welcome in the New Year. Thanks, Naemanson, for joining us! Doubly glad we got plowed out in time!
