Subject: She Moved Through the Faire parody-drunk
From: GUEST,kevin-a-murphy@dm.net

I was just at a party where a friend sang a fragment of a "She Moved Through the Faire" parody, which was something to the effect of "she lurched through the faire" and her being from a family of drunkards who sang "it will not be long till the pubs open again..."

There was also a good lyric about "Like the swan in the evening/she fell into the lake."

Anyone know this version?

Kevin

I believe Adam McNaughtan may have written a parody of this song called "She Fell through the Flair" (Flair =floor) for non-Glaswegians. Or he may just have composed a fragment.

"So softly she breathed I could scarce smell the gin..." ?

If so it's the Kipper Family parody that you're looking for.

I thunk this is what you are looking for and it's by Sid Kipper

My young love she say to me My mother won't mind
and my father won't care for with drink he is blind
Then she staggered against me and this she did say
Oh it will not be long love, till they're open again

Then she swayed away from me And she fell down the stairs
And dimly I heard her crash here and crash there
The she went her way homeward just one over the eight
And like the swan of the evening She fell into the lake

Lat night she came to me Dead drunk she came in
So softly she belched, I could scarce smell the gin
Then she leaned herself on me and this she did say
Oh it will not be long love 'Till they're open again

I remember hearing Adam McNaughten singing She Fell Through the Flair in a folkclub years ago. Anybody got those words?

Isaac,

If you click on the third link under Related Threads at the top of this thread you will find a discussion on the origins of the song, the gist of which is that Padraic Colum rewrote an old folk song as a poem. Many poets have done this over the years. Another example is W. B. Yeats "Down by the Sally Gardens".

You will find a lot of information (some more accurate than others) by following the above links. Be aware that due to a problem that happened here a few years ago, the earlier posts appear out of sequence, so the first post you read may not be the oldest one. Its confusing until you realise this.
