Trying Trying Trying to find lyrics to a song someone once sang to me when I was a young gal!

It was Sooooooooo long ago that I may remember them wrong but goes something like........

In 1840 I took a little trip down the grand missouri to the river Mississip...(de de dade de)................... They ran so fast the rabbits couldn't catch them, they ran so fast ...........(dar dar de dar de dar)........... Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.......

Does anyone know what this Damn song is, or where to find it, or who sang it, or who wrote it, or which country it's from, or anything? please let me know cheers!

Sounds like "The Battle of New Orleans". Here's an older thread about the song, with more info than you'll probably ever want to know.

I believe the lyrics are fairly aggressively defended by copyright lawyers, but this is a start.

My dad used to sing this when I was growing up. Can't be assured of the lyrics, but it includes a little more than I've seen posted.

In the 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the Mighty Mississip'
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we fought the bloody British through the town of New Orleans

Well Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes
Held our fire till we saw their faces well
Then we lifted up our squirrel guns and blew 'em all to...

Well we fired our guns but the British kept 'a comin'
But there was a(uh)not as many as there was a while ago
Ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

What appears to be Jimmy Driftwood's full version is in the database, of course, here:  Battle of New Orleans

Just type battle of new orleans in the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page for even more references.
