Wow. In the first 48 hours that my songs were on mp3.com, LOVE IS TEASIN'click here to hear went up to 188 in the Celtic genre chart. THE WINTER IT IS PAST is at 245 and SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR is at 228. Thanks to all those who checked out the page and listened.

I just checked the lyrics in the DT and noticed that the version I sing is different. The tune I sing is very close to the tune for Anac Cuain. Here is the way I sing it, tweaked a bit.

LOVE IS TEASIN'

Oh love is teasin', and love is pleasin',
And love's a pleasure when first it's new,
But love grows older and then grows colder,
And fades away like the mornin' dew.

You need to do something about your website though - having to click on a picture of a birds nest and and moose to get to your web design tips isn't exactly intuitive.

Alice, that was lovely singing! I'm too dumb to put tunes here for folks, but I'll maybe get son Jon to play "O Love is Teasin," from my very first recording (also Elektra's first record)...issued in 1952, a 10" lp. In fact I believe, O Love is Teasin was the album title! It is almost as you sing it, which makes me wonder where you learned it!!! I myself learned it from Peggy Staunton, a lovely Irishwoman who worked in the kitchen at the Henry Street Settlement where I had my first NYC job (I majored in social work and that's why I came to NY from KY in the first place...). Peggy was a beautiful singer, and we'd usually end up step-dancing round the big diningroom after all the important folks left.

Someone told me that there was one of those old albums for sale on ebay recently, and it went for over $200! So, I'm gonna visit your website- will you return the visit? www.jeanritchie.com Happy New Century

Alice, I listened to your singing from a link you put up in another thread - beautiful stuff. I love that unnacompaied pure voice sound. I'm not surprised it's gone up in the charts - bravo!

Hi, Jean, I learned it from your songbook, "Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians". I was learning Anac Cuain a few months ago, and as I was flipping through your songbook, I noticed that the first part of Love Is Teasin as it is written in your book is VERY similar to Anac Cuain. It was natural for me to add the second part of the tune and arrange the words the way that felt "right" to me. (I still haven't memorized all the lyrics to Anac Cuain.)

I am at the moment uploading Kitty of Coleraine to the mp3 page, but it takes sometimes a few days for the songs to be reviewed by their staff and made public.

Jean, thanks for listening, and thanks for putting Peggy's song in your songbook! Catrin, thanks also to you for the compliment.

As an artist myself, I took notice of your fine illustrations from the earlier "artwork" thread. I also called up your singing and listened to your lovely version of "Teasin'". (First heard the song by Tim O'Brien). You have an exceptional voice!

thanks, JH. I've been on Mudcat since '98, yet until Bill and Allan came out to Montana on their adventure, I have felt isolated from the "sound of music". Being in the remote sticks, I don't get to participate in folk music gatherings. Setting up this mp3 site last weekend is the first really functional way that I've found to sing for all of you (can't use HearMe, Mac inclined).

I wish I could attend one of the gatherings you all talk about back East. Being in Montana has been a career and financial handicap. Thank goodness for the internet.

I missed this somewhere in the other thread you all have mentioned. Just beautiful, Alice! I esp. loved the way you did She Moved Through the Fair; your phrasing and ornamentation are *spot on* and lovely. So nice to hear you...HearMe/Paltalk has been frustrating in its exclusion of you MAC users.:-)

I know Willie-O told me how last time, but I cannot remember and couldn't figure it out: how do I make a comment on mp3 so that it helps you to move up the charts, or is it just that I click on and listen?

You know I understand that isolation thing; you've been doing an inspiring and wonderful job of it, despite the drawbacks.

I'm new to mp3.com, so I haven't figured out all the ins and outs, kat. I think you just listen to the recordings. I don't think you have to write anything. It tracks the number of hits to each song.

I just listened to the songs, beautiful interpretations, You have a perfect voice for haunting melodies. My mother used to sing "She Moved Through the Fair" only she called it " The Next Market Day". Your singing brought back many childhood memories of her.

P.S.#2 - I came across some photos of myself sitting on some rocks on the edge of Gartan Lake. As soon as I figure out how to send them I will.

Kat, I just read something on the mp3.com site called "shameless promotion" or Payola Songs that describes an auction they have for promoting songs. I didn't read all the details yet - don't know how it works, but it seems there is at least one other way to increase the standings of a song in the chart in addition to listener's hits.

Well, I was tired last night and wrote that I'd been here at Mudcat since '98, when I meant to write '97. I started my website in '98. Now I have to re-design it and remove extraneous hobby stuff like gardening and focus it on music and art. It's been a long stretch at the computer the last two days - also trying to finish a package design for a gift company in Ontario, Canada in between music work.

Is this song Child #204, or does it stray too far from the fold? How about "There Is a Tavern in the Town"? They all seem to share verses with "Waly Waly." Take a look at the Traditional Ballad Index (click).

Hi there Jean I hope come back to pick this up. Just went and looked through my Stuff and there was "Singing family of the cumberlands" also 2 of the old 10" records that I still treasure. Kentucky Mountains of the Cumberlands and Elektra -25 and Jean Ritchie singing the traditional songs of her Kentucky mountain family Elektra-Stratford EKLP-2 with Love is Teasin'g. 'Don't know where the version of my midi fits in the genealogy of this tune, but I'll throw it into the circle to add to the thread. This iteration, titled Love is Easy, was collected in Ontario by Canadian folklorist Edith Fowke. I understand that it is close to that sung by Jean Ritchie, referenced above.

Nice midi Barry. The words and tune in Jean Ritchie's songbook are different, you have more verses on your page. The one I sing is the one in her book, first part of the tune, then add the second part like in Anach Cuain. There is a large family of songs that are related here - this is a bit of what Jean said to me regarding a version Sarah Makem sings-

Then goes into your high part:

by the way, I just added Spanicil Hill, with the Michael Considine original words, to my mp3 page. I had a bit of a cough this morning, so it isn't as perfect as I'd like, but it is taking several days for things to appear on my page and I wanted to get it done and up. May record it again later with my hammered dulcimer or fiddle/piano playing friends accompanying. It is solo a capella now.

That was great. I have a photo of myself and Edith Fowke somewhere, taken at the 1968 Mariposa Festival, I should post it sometime. She was a great lady and her husband Frank was one of the gentlest, quietest and nicest individuals you could meet.

The last verse"

is very similar to a verse in " Fair and Tender Ladies"

"Come all ye fair and tender ladies>br>Take warning how you court young men
They're like the stars on a summer evening

It is taking awhile for the approval process at mp3.... they blocked my recording of Kitty of Coleraine, saying it isn't in the public domain! I had to reply with more information about it and hopefully they will then allow it on the site. (sheesh) I pulled Spancil Hill, working on the quality of the recording some more.

Hi, Peg, the words that came to me for my version, very close is "I left my cottage, the home I dwelt in" where you sing... "I left my homeland...". In Jean's published version in the songbook, the line is "I left my home and my fond dwellin'...".

Part of singing it from the heart, is the words change to make it feel personally right, eh?
