Subject: what i've learned From: Hobie Date: 07 Jan 01 - 01:08 AM i sent this out as an e-mail awhile back and got some pretty good responses out of it. Maybe you could add a few Hobie As i sit down to write this i kind of ask myself why i am doing it, and to tell you the truth i really don't have a good answer. All i know is that i've had this itch in my skull for about a week now and i wanna do somthing about it. In my 24 years on this earth i have probably experienced as much as most people twice my age, and when i look back on thse experiences I try to learn somthing from them. Some of the lessons learned are rather profound and others quite trivial. I know how i am and know that i could never just sit down and say this stuff, but for some reason the thoughts that comes to my head can flow easily from my brain to my fingers. I think i'm just gonna start now.
I've learned that no matter what happens to you in this life, the world doesn't owe you a damn thing I've learned that baby's aren't quite as fragile as one might think(still freaks me out a little to hold them, they're so little) |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: DougR Date: 07 Jan 01 - 01:14 AM No unkindness intended, Hobie, but if you really want folks to read your entire message, break it up into paragraphs. Much easier to read. DougR |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Jon Freeman Date: 07 Jan 01 - 01:28 AM Doug, there are line spaces between Hobie's lines - I am not sure what character was used - they show on edit here, looking like a blank line but not in notepad. I have added line breaks where they are. Jon |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: wysiwyg Date: 07 Jan 01 - 01:34 AM Well Doug, that was Hobie's fifth post here ever. Might help to tell him that he needs a double line space to achieve the paragraph break. What I've learned is: There is no subsitute for really getting to know another human being. Truth and love are never far apart. Persisting against discouragement is far more valuable than being optimistic. Things go better when you give them your full, flexible, delighted attention. Everyone is made to make music, period, and has a way of doing that whether they have found it yet or not. Most things ARE as we observe but have a completely different reason or cause, and are headed somewhere positive we usually do not see. It matters to be able to see movement-- to see that everything is a work in progress and not in need of judgment as much as of aware attention. It takes longer if you don't start. Building something (or starting something), no matter how useless the thing seems to be, is always better than tearing something down (or stopping a bad thing), no matter how necessary that seems to be. Having a Mudcat nickname is suckier in the long run than using your own name. And..... "THEY" are often right, as are you yourself, much oftener than would seem possible at any given point in present time. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Sorcha Date: 07 Jan 01 - 01:43 AM I kind of like Hobies' list even if it is rather long. Hobie has learned a lot in just 24 years; more than I did in 24 years, I think. |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Jon Freeman Date: 07 Jan 01 - 03:29 AM Praise, I had to use a Hex editor to see what went wrong with Hobie's post. There is what looks to be a double line space when you look at it in editing or if you were to post it here. The only trouble is that each apparently (or visibly) blank line contains a single space character. So Hobie, if you are trying to leave a gap when typing in here, just press enter twice, do not key in a space on the blank line or it will jumble up. Jon |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Hobie Date: 07 Jan 01 - 09:27 AM sorry guys it wass a cut and paste deal, it lokked okay when i put it in the box thingy you type stuff in. Hobie |

Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Jeri Date: 07 Jan 01 - 10:27 AM It's important to decide whether a problem is someone else's, mine, or both, and to choose which ones to tackle with compassion, realism and respect for my own sanity. Compassionate honesty is always best. I don't have to like someone to try to understand them. I don't have to understand them to like them. If it's me against the rest of the world, it's probably me that's wrong...but maybe not. Art is what happens when things don't look exactly as you planned. Mistakes are only made by those who take chances.

Subject: RE: what i've learned From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 07 Jan 01 - 10:28 AM I've learned that this thread has absolutely nothing to do with folk music by any definition at all --- right or wrong---trad or mod-bastardized. Love, Art |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Jeri Date: 07 Jan 01 - 10:31 AM If you change words in a folk song, it's only wrong if people catch you doing it. Better, Art? ;-) |
Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Sarah2 Date: 07 Jan 01 - 10:40 AM Oh, I dunno, Art -- I can see the potential for several songs here. 'Specially some Blues, both sad and humorous. I mean, take that potato chip line and run with it. Sarah |

(Having done so, I'd say you're right - but it's a useful tool.) These just appeared on another list:

Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Liz the Squeak Date: 08 Jan 01 - 06:15 PM I've learned that there is nothing better than a good friend, except a good friend with a huge bar of chocolate. I've also learned that I can tell the difference between my arse and my elbow. I can reach my arse with both hands. Think about it. LTS I never did learn that blue clicky thing. |

Subject: RE: what i've learned From: Bill D Date: 08 Jan 01 - 09:58 PM It takes a hell of a big dog to weigh a ton. You can pick your friends; you can pick your nose, but you can't wipe your friends off on the saddlehorn. You have taken yourself too seriously. We DO get too soon old and too late smart! Youth is wasted on the young. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are insoluble in gasoline. (found on the wall of the men's room at the Methodist Student Union at the U. of Kansas) Pepsi-Cola hits the spot! There's always one more...(insert noun) in a randomly arranged junk drawer. (asprin, safty pin, penny, fuse, stamp....etc.) Tho older I get, the less I am absolutely sure of...that's how I know I am getting smarter. |
