Subject: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: Susan-Marie Date: 09 Jan 01 - 07:42 PM RE: Irish Ways and Irish Laws There are a few previous threads containing the lyrics to this song, sung by Christie Moore and others. The tune is described as similar to "Rose Rose Rose Rose will I ever see thee wed". Can anyone tell me if it is EXACTLY like that tune, or can anyone post a midi or ABC? Thanks. An old thread w/ lyrics and chords is at http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=24996#289370 |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: Sorcha Date: 11 Jan 01 - 06:28 PM There is a MIDI file of Rose, rose here: Click Is that what you wanted? I have never heard the other song, so I don't know how close they are.......sorry. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: Wolfgang Date: 12 Jan 01 - 04:39 AM The tunes are close, one of the four lines very close indeed, but it wouldn't hold as a case of plagiarism, in my eyes. I still don't do tunes in the web. If there's no other way, Susan-Marie, PM me. I could sing it to you on phone, I could play it for you on phone or I could send you a tape with Christy Moore singing it. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: Susan-Marie Date: 12 Jan 01 - 04:42 PM Well, tomorrow afternoon I will be calling Wolfgang and he will serenade me with this song. If anyone would like to save me the long-distance call, post a midi or other explanation of the tune. Otherwise, I will post the midi once I get the tune from Wolfgang. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: MMario Date: 25 Apr 03 - 01:44 PM hmm- I know it is several years later - but did anyone ever get the tune that is capable of posting it? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: My guru always said Date: 25 Apr 03 - 03:44 PM I sing this, but have no way of posting tunes. Except maybe a small zipped .wav file. Let me know if that's any use. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: MMario Date: 25 Apr 03 - 03:47 PM if you can find someone who can transcribe by ear...e-mail it to them and I'll take the result! *grin* nice to know I am not the only one who can't do such things... (BTW - if you *can* transcribe - there are lots of really easy programs out there that will allow posting of tunes) |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: belfast Date: 26 Apr 03 - 11:34 AM It's in the Christy Moore Songbook, I think. And if nobody has done it before then I'll post an abc version next week sometime. |

Subject: Tune Add: IRISH WAYS AND IRISH LAWS (John Gibbs) From: belfast Date: 26 Apr 03 - 12:33 PM Fair enough. I may as well do it now. This is the tune as I know it and it may vary slightly from what's in the book or any recordings. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: My guru always said Date: 26 Apr 03 - 07:04 PM Well done for the translation belfast, looks like MMario is well satisfied!!! It's all Greek to me, but luckily I know the tune anyway :-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: MMario Date: 26 Apr 03 - 07:08 PM well - I'm easily pleased... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: belfast Date: 27 Apr 03 - 02:03 PM And I suppose it would do no harm to mention that the song was written by John Gibb. The trouble is that when Christy does a song he stamps his own personality on it so strongly that it becomes his song. So much so that it would appear that some people think "Sweet Thames Flow Softly" is an Irish song. And that's bizarre. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Irish Ways and Irish Laws From: Susanne (skw) Date: 27 Apr 03 - 05:23 PM Don't do dots either, as I can't even read them. But I think Eric Bogle used the same tune for his 'Hero's Return' (My youngest son came home today), if that's any help to anybody. |
