Subject: Stone Angel / Eddie's Song
From: GUEST,Tom James

I'm looking for a song from the late 60's or early 70's. I'm not sure of the song title exactly. I know Bruce Phillips also has a song about Eddie Belkowski, the concert pianist who lost a hand in the Spanish Civil War and later worked at The Quiet Night in Chicago and would play beautiful one-hand melodies after closing time. Perhaps his is called "Eddies Song". The other song, the one I'm looking for, has a chorus " And the stone angel hung from a wall up above/ looked down blind all the night long/ But when the one armed man played to an empty saloon/ she looked down at him and she smiled" The other lyric I remember, the one that makes me want to find the song, goes " He played better with one hand than most men with two / Yet made posters for all of the stars / I wish to my heart you could hear that man play / And you'd know just how happy you are " Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I found this:

Utah Phillips tells the story of Eddie Belkowski, a brilliant young concert pianist, who lost his right arm fighting with the Lincoln Brigade against the facists in Spain. In the hospital he became addicted to morphine and wound up a derelict in the streets of Chicago. Thirty years later, fighting to recover his lost life, he was working as a janitor in a nightclub in Chicago where Utah was performing. Late one night after the show, Utah said he heard the most beautiful piano sonata coming from the main room after everyone else had gone home. He looked in and there was Eddie Belkowski, all alone in the dark, playing Chopin with his left hand!

Maybe it's a Utah Phillips song......???

Perhaps I was unclear ( Do what you do best, my ma always said) I know about the Phillips song, but there is another song about the same fellow with the stone angel chorus thing. It is quite a beautiful song ...

And with that information, from www.mp3lyrics.org:

FOR EDDIE

He'd been dealt a bad hand,
Nearly fifty years old.
Cleanin' glasses,
At night in a bar.
Only one good hand,
For to play him his tunes,
On a piano,
Tired out and marred.

And the stone angel hung,
On the wall up above.
Looked out blind,
All the nights long,
But when the one-armed man played,
To an empty saloon,
She looked down and smiled,
As he played her his songs.

Duke, the white Shepherd,
Who guarded the room,
Never leavin'
The back of the bar.
Would climb up on the stage,
And curl up around his feet,
As to guard him,
And his music from harm.

And the stone angel hung,
On the wall up above.
Looked out blind,
All the nights long,
[ Find more Lyrics at www.mp3lyrics.org/aHdQ ]
But when the one-armed man played,
To an empty saloon,
She looked down and smiled,
As he played her his songs.

[ Instrumental break. ]

I heard him one night,
When he thought to be alone.
And I lied,
And I did him a wrong.
I can't give back the pleasure,
His music gave to me,
I can only,
Give him this song.

He played better with one hand,
Than most men with two.
Yet made posters,
For all of the stars,
And I wish to my heart,
He could play for you.
So you'd know,
Just how happy you are.

And the stone angel hung,
On the wall up above.
And me and the big white dog,
All stopped,
Once to listen,
To the one-armed man play,
To their smiles,
In an empty saloon.

The correct name for da man is Ed Balchowsky. I knew him as well as anyone got to know Eddie. Even have recordings by him.

I have put some reminiscences and pictures of Ed at my photo website that BK Lick so graciously provided for my snapshots . One is of Ed Balchowsky with Studs Terkel and his late wife Ida in Chicago at the Old Town School Of Folk Music. Several others of Ed at the Quiet Knight are there too.

Also, Mudcatters, there are hundreds of new photos in the PLACES album at that site. I'll start a thread about those after they are fitted with basic labels. MORE extensive info on the snapshots will be added as I find time to do that.

Again, Bruce Kallick, THANKS SO MUCH for all you're doing there!!

Sorry! Yet another time, the site is at

http://rudegnu.com/art_thieme.html

And when you are asked for a 'user name' and a 'password' simply put in the word 'mudcat' for both of those. That'll get you in.

The people most thrilled with all of this will be Eddie's daughters Elizabeth and Raina, both of whom live in California. Eddie was part of my family as he and my husband went to Spain together and fought. When I married Syd and we moved to Old Town Eddie lived with us off and on for decades until he worked at the Quiet Knight for Richard, and then after. Our home was home base for him and his band of outsider artists. Some of the things written in these threads aren't quite true--like he was never a derelect for 30 years or whatever. He was even a better poet and painter than musician to me. In any case, I am technologically challenged being an elder but I know this all would mean a lot to Liz and Raina so if anyonecan hlep me get it to them, step up. thanks much. Blessings to all.
