OK, I'm back and ready to work. There has been a lot of interest in this so I will recap here.

We will start this at the Radio Show open mike after FSGW. There will be a Mudcat Touring Roadshow banner which will be posted prominently on the stage. At the end of the concert the banner will be mailed or carried to the next concert and be displayed on stage. Performers will sign the banner.

There was some question as to WHAT was touring. The Mudcat is touring as represented by the banner. None of us can afford to tour the world but the postage for the banner is doable.

The promoter for each venue must decide what the local market will bear as far as admission price is concerned. The promoter will also be on the hook for advertising and setting up the venue. CAUTION! This could cost you some money. Possibly not a lot but the chance is there. If possible you may defray your expenses from the proceeds of the concert. Any leftover money should go to Max for the Mudcat.

These are the people who have offered to help in the last part of the thread..

I can play almost any show in Texas. I tour with several other artists from the Dallas area as a sideman, soloist or part of a Dallas songwriters circle. We do shows all over Texas. I am a pro at opening shows of all kinds. Let me know. I have friends that want to do house concerts in Houston and friends that have some of the best house concerts in the State. I need a list of those performers interested in this effort so I can talk dates and times to my house concert hosts. Many already have the year booked, but might make room for this if the artists' available have the type of material each room requires.

Gray Rooster,

I'm conversant with the lady who spearheads the Woody Guthrie events in Pampa, where they are currently working on purchasing the drug store where Woody worked as a youngster (and bought and played his first guitar) to turn into a museum/small concert hall. We might be able to get a "split the profits" weekend there (they're always raising funds, too), if you know anyone interested, especially singer-songwriter types. If any one of you or your friends is interested, PM me I'll approach her about it and maybe get some plans laid. Thelma (the above-mentioned lady) loves folk music and will go to work on accommodations, area-wide promotion and such if it's partly for Woody.

Rowana, FSGW is the folk music organisation in Washington DC who run the Fall gathering caled the Getaway in Maryland. Charlie Baum is one of the organisers I think. You will find out more about it if you do a search for Getaway

Actually, this is a rather attractive idea. I am on the committee of a folk club in Kent called "Hazlitt Folk" (www.hazlittfolk.co.uk - but ignore what the site says about singer songwriters being especially welcome: everyone is welcome in equal degree and I particularly like traditional English harmony singers) and if there are other mudcatters in the UK who would consider getting as far as Maidstone, Kent, I would put the idea of turning a club evening over to the Mudcat to the committee with enthusiasm.

Great project Brett. I take it from the secret code reference (FSGWxxx)that you're talking about next fall? Count me in as an available performer in either Toronto or possibly northern Vermont...and I could probably produce a show here if there's enough local interest.

In addition to the banner, is this going to be somewhat of a Pied-Piper/Tag-a-Long type event? Could some play in and travel to several stops along the way, then drop out to be replaced by others? Maybe rejoin at a later date and place? If so, it sounds like fun.
Depending on the dates, I'm game to participate in any way.

Naemanson,

Well, I DO! Am in contact with the Woody Guthrie folks in Pampa, now transcribing a letter-form proposition (what we'll need for Mudcat from them and what the performers will offer the Guthrie museum folks in return) to send to them after I e-mail copy to you for your approval/editing.

Of course, I'm probably thinking a little "large" here, hoping that my proposed event for Mudcat/Woody will turn into an annual thing in Pampa for their Guthrie museum, and I know from sad experience that such things need to be planned well in advance, wheels moving early. If others are envisioning a one-shot pub-sponsored weekend gathering of 'Catters and their friends, such may not need so much advance work.

I've got an initial design done for the banner, and will try to get it to you this weekend. Can you open an eps or import it to a document program to look at it? If not, it may have to wait until I can get back to work next Thursday, where much memory is available to convert to jpeg. (This laptop gets excited when it has to save in Photoshop and sometimes goes into hysterics when asked for conversions.)

Back to my letter composition...

Sarah

Hi Pete, How close is Easton to NYC? If you get anything going from Boston to Washington, I think I can persuade Sorcha Dorcha to play, depending on the size of the venue. To convince the others to do it gratis or reduced payment out of town, we need either a civil rights concern or a lot of exposure. If something gets goin in New York, I think we are pretty available as long as it does not conflict with our schdual.

Well I am sure there is interest in the UK - I am in Manchester where I know there will be some interest.

I really like the idea of some performers (who are able to commit) doing a few stops, maybe starting in the US at the FSGW and then travelling across the pond to the UK (and anywhere else in between). I don't mean that any one individual would have to be committed to do the whole thing, rather that people could commit to a few days/weeks(?) tour and then hand over to someone else.

This could be really BIG if we organise it properly!

Cheers,

Catrin

I have tacit agreement for a house concert in Houston, Texas - all I need is a date that doesn't conflict with the Pickin' in the Pines Festival (Texas, May 17-19), Kerrville Folk Festival (Texas, May 21 - June 11) or (Texas, Wine and Music Festival.

The house will seat 50 people and the performers will have a place to sleep if needed (up to six).

Are you ready?

Okay, from Indianapolis, I can/will play and sing anywhere within say two hundred fifty miles. That would include (not exclusively) the Chicago area, Louisville, Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus, Ohio. Disregarding actual miles, I would include St. Louis and Cleveland.

As a house concert, we have a thirty-person living room, with a Steinway grand, although that wouldn't particularly fit with our style of music. We have two vacant single beds for the not-too-tall, and sleeping bag space. Big back yard if someone wants to pitch a tent. We'd feed whoever stayed with us.

Another thought about venue: Our church allows every member one free use per year of the meeting room, which would seat about 250, as I recall. Perhaps others have similar possibilities.

I would definitely need guidance and advice as to publicity.

Is there a Toronto date yet or is it speculative? I could host one the day after or the day before, we're halfway between Toronto and Vermont (three hours east of Toronto.
