My daughters hit me with this as I teased them last weekend. My older daughter nudged her sister and said, "Don't worry, sis, we'll be choosing his nursing home."

Think how utterly, evilly selfish it is to have a child. "Oh, honey, wouldn't a baby just be splendid? With its little hands, and its little feet and its little arms and legs and face and smile. Oh, we have to have one." Great, and once it's done, here is another little human to have to grow and learn what a sick collection of animals it is into which he's been born; who has to learn the pointlessness of the asinine cycle of human life; the pain and unhappiness that acompany; the stupidity of the majority; the outrage of old age and death; the unfair circumstances of competition amongst organisms; the injustice of suffering, the absurdity of doctrines and idealogies; the cold blade of war; the inner demons of hunger, desire, self-loathing; who will be taught to hate and feel shame and fear and remorse, regret, guilt; who will one day suck from nonexistence another little conscious body to continue the hideous lineage of incessant dark-humor; and who will one day die, wrapped in a urine-stained, hospital-issued death-shroud, plugged into beeping, blipping machines, fed through dripping bags armed with needles at the mercy of smart-ass little nurses, who know not yet that they, too, will be faced with this end.

What more horrific and vile act than that of having a child? There can be none. Torture is not worse, murder is not worse, nor rape or anything else, because it is birth that precludes them all. Were it not for birth, none of these other atrocities would even have a chance to be performed. It is the miracle of birth and life that drowns the light of the world, and it is that selfish obeyence of desire that is hung over the heads of all parents in the look of disgust on their disaffected teenager's face. How can one repay an infinite offense? -- Shane Smith

Said to me by avery angry 9 year old. "Just remember. I'll take care of you when you're old!" And my reply? "No you won't. I have a 401K." He was baffled.

Think how utterly wonderful it is to have a child. "Oh, honey, wouldn't a baby just be splendid? With its little hands, and its little feet and its little arms and legs and face and smile. Oh, we have to have one." Great, and once it's done, here is another little human to grow and learn what an amazingly varied collection of animals it is into which he's been born; who has to learn the point of the marvelous cycle of human life; the joy and happiness that acompany; the intelligence of the majority; the wisdom of old age and dignity of death; the circumstances of fair competition amongst organisms; the defeat of suffering, the hope of doctrines and idealogies; defying the cold blade of war; the inner satisfaction of beating hunger, desire and self-loathing; who will be taught to love and feel pride and courage and joy, satisfaction, pleasure; who will one day bring into existence another little conscious body to continue the beautiful lineage of incessant humor; and who will one day die, wrapped in a warm, lovingly made blanket, plugged into the empathy of their family, fed through love, with warmth, at the place of their loved ones, who know that they, too, will be blessed with this end.

What more honourable and selfless act than that of having a child? There can be none. Marriage is not better, charity is not better, nor song or anything else, because it is birth that precludes them all. Were it not for birth, none of these other miracles would even have a chance to be performed. It is the miracle of birth and life that embodies the light of the world, and it is that selfless obeyence of giving that is hung, as medals, on all parents in the look of on their well balanced teenager's face. How can one repay an infinite gift? -- Dave Polshaw - with no apologies to Shane Smith.

Who has the sadder life, the pessamist or the optomist

To re-lighten the discussion can anyone remember the exact phrase of, something like, "Before you critisise anyone, walk a mile in their shoes. At least then you will be a mile away and they can't catch you barefoot..."

Somthing similar anyway?

Cheers

It's nice if your kids choose a good home for you when you get old, but that's not the best reason to be nice to them.

If you work hard to have a healthy and good relationship with your kids, you end up with a healthy and good relationship with your kids. I can't think of anything better than that.

Carol

Dave the gnome;
Thanks for that wonderfully inspiring answer to that really depressing paragraph by someone that nobody has ever heard of before (and probably doesn't want to hear of again!).
Wouldn't it be ironic if that ol' pessimist had kids, and could be labeled a hypocrite at well?

After the "Taking Care of My Mother Fiasco" in 1998, Kate swears she will put me in a Nursing Home rather than go through that. I am all with her.......I would rather go to ANY Nursing Home than put my family through what my Mom put me through. Hey, we get meals, clean clothes, and don't have to plan/cook for Holidays.....what more could I ask for?

I can always be the Ultimate Bitch and press my call button every 30 seconds.........and yell and scream a lot! LOL! (no, I know it's not really funny, but I would rather be there than know I destroyed my family for two years, and that is what happened to me--both kids ended up in the Judicial System because I wasn't there to supervise, and I damn near ended up in Divorce Court because she was SO BLOODY determined to "die at home". Which, in the end, she didn't, because she had a heart attack and it was so painful we had to take her to hospital for meds.........

Upshot is she died anyway, and so will I. Someday. Sometime. I just hope I don't cause anyone I love a lot of grief before I die, like my mom did.......
