... as sung by Roy Rogers when I was a very little lad. I know the tune. Sad, really, I suppose, but that's nostalgia for you!

Thanks, Steve

Way-hey - The old saturday afternoon matinees eh?

All I can remember is

"A four legged friend, a four legged friend.
He'll never let you down.
He's honest and faithful right through to the end
My one-two-three-wonderful four legged friend."

General gist anyway...

Hope someone come sup with the rest!

Found it on Cowpie, Steve.

It's even got chords, which might mean something to an instrumentalist like you (but nothing to me!)

A FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND
Roy Rogers.
 Key = G (3/4)

Intro: D7 - D7 - G - G

Chorus

G C
A four-legged friend -- a four-legged friend
D7 G
He'll never let you down
C
He's honest and faithful right up to the end (first time only)
D7 G G {D7 D7 G G}
That wonderful one two three four legged friend

G C
A woman's like cactus and cactus can hurt
D7 G
'Cause she's just a tight-waisted winky-eyed flirt
C
She'll soon have your land and your pride and your gold
D7 G
And bury you deep long before you grow old

Repeat Chorus

Inst. Solo: G - G - C - C - D7 - D7 - G - G - C - C - D7 - D7 - D7 - G - G

G C
A two-legged hombre is worthless as sand
D7 G
He'll smile like a saint with a gun in his hand
C
He'll promise to stick by your side like a pal
D7 G
But he'll also promise the same to your gal

Repeat Chorus

Inst. Solo: G - G - C - C - D7 - D7 - G - G - C - C - D7 - D7 - D7 - G - G

G C
Who carries your burden -- who carries your load
D7 G
On tumbleweed land or a long dusty road
C
Who asks you no questions who tells you no lies
D7 G
That four-legged friend with the two honest eyes

G C
A four-legged friend -- a four-legged friend
D7 G
He'll never let you down
C
He's honest and faithful right up to the end
D7 G
That wonderful four-legged friend
D7 G
That wonderful one two three four legged friend ---- Whoa, Trigger!

RtS (off to sing it like a hound dog with croup)

You can see/hear Roy Rogers singing this song in the film Son Of Paleface, also starring Bob Hope. It appears on TV from time-to-time, so watch for it. I can send you a clip from the movie, if you like.

ROY ROGERS - My very first hero, cor, but he had TWO guns. I've still got an autographed photo somewhere, of course at the time I thought he'd signed it with his own gun toting hand. I suppose I was 7 or 8years old when My Christmas present was a cowboy outfit. Such nostalgia thanks Steve.

I knew the first verse by heart, one of those things you take to the grave and beyond I suppose. Never knew the others though.

Subject: Lyr Add: MY FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND (Smoky Dawson)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 31 May 13 - 05:43 PM

An Australian song with a similar theme, from a performer who might be Australia's nearest equivalent to Roy Rogers or Gene Autry:

My transcription from Spotify. There are a couple of place-names that I had to spell phonetically. I have been unable to find them with Google.

MY FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND
As sung by Smoky Dawson on "Homestead of My Dreams"

If you're wondering why I'm grieving' tonight,
As by the campfire I'm yearnin',
If you want to know why a cowboy should cry,
It's the ache in my heart that is hurtin'.
I had a pal, a wonderful pal,
But never I'll ride him again.
Now he is gone; I'm singing this song
    To my wonderful four-legged friend.

It's a long windin' track when stop and look back
    Since ol' Flashin'-Eyes started rovin',
Where the Murray flows on at Boycorryon(?)
And the mountains look down on Cancovin(?).
We travelled in shows and wild rodeos.
Life was adventure and fun then,
Riding along with a smile and a song,
    Me and my four-legged friend.

I rode him around the cities and towns
To the far Never Never we'd go,
And a million young hearts in far-distant parts
Listened in on their home radio.
Together they'd ride along by my side
To that wonderful world of pretend,
A place you could feel was exciting and real.
How the kids loved my four-legged friend!

Now he's gone from the range; he needed a change.
Somewhere he roams in new pasture,
And though it may be just my fantasy,
I believe we will meet there hereafter.
If I had my time to go back down that line
And live it all over again,
I'd share it with you, old pal good and true,
    My wonderful four-legged friend.

[Spoken:] I know there must be many others like me
Who are sharing the same situation.
How can you forget an old family pet
When they've become like some special relation?
And in moments like this, it's their company we miss
As we relive those good times again,
And though they are gone, they'll always live on,
    Our wonderful four-legged friends.

[Sung:] In moments like this, their company we miss
As we relive those good times again.
Though they are gone, they'll always live on,
    Our wonderful four-legged friends.
