Subject: Lyr Add: BHEAN A' LEANNA
From: Brían
Date: 15 Jul 01 - 10:52 PM

Ah, this is just my forte.

BEAN A' LEANNA

Agus éirigh in do shuí a bhean a' leanna,
Is ná fán le do chaipín a ghléas,
Ná tú go bhfaighaidh tú dhom braon uisce bheatha
Ná cart de chuid leanna atá agat féin.
Mar béamar ag ól anseo go maidin
Seo slainte le fear uilig go léir,
Is nuair a fhágfas an mháistreas an bhaile
Beidh an cailín is deise agam féin.

Maise a Dhia, céard a dhéanfas mé amarach?
Nuair a fheicfeas mo ghrá a' tiocht aniar,
'S nuair nach bhféadaim a thíocht ina láthair
Leis an méid a bhí eadrainn ariamh.
Nuair a smaoiním ar a súgradh is ar a' gáirí
Is ar inneachtín a dhá láimhín fial,
Ora briseann mo chroí bocht le dólás,
Agus goileann mé go mór ina diaidh.

Muise bhí mise lá is mé go súgach,
Is mé triall ar tigh Mhicil sa ngleann,
Bhí stumpán de tincéir caoch ann,
Agus jug poitín líonta ar a' chlár.
Do thiteamar marbh, lag thíos ann,
Gan preab inár gcos ná inár lámh,
Is é beannacht shíol Éabha agus shíol Adhamha,
Agus íocfadh mé an reicnáil.

Maise fada mo chosaí gan brógaí,
Óir is fada mo phócaí gan pingin,
Óir is fada mé ag imeacht le mná óga,
Ach níor ól mé riamh deor le mo mhian.
Ó shiúil mise cnoic agus shléibhtí,
Agus gleanntrachaí bhí géar ar a mbarr,
Is a lán bealaí eile ara déarfainn,
Is gan aon soip céille in mo cheann.
Ar thuairisc mo staidbheainín bhéasach
'S nach sínfidh sí taobh liom go brách,
Go mba chóir di bheith síntí taobh thuas díom
Ná bheith i nGaillimh dhá uair roimh an lá.

From the singing of Pádraig Ó Maolruaí, Leitir Fhinín, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, Co. Mhuigh Eo.
From the RTE CD:AMHRÁIN AR AN SEAN-NÓS

If anyone requested, I could do a fair translation. It would take a couple of days to do it properly.

Beidh mé ag caint leat aríst,

Brían.

Ná habair é(Don't mention it). I'm surprised I didn't see it before. Again, if anyone needs a translation, I'd be glad to. I have been meaning to add this to my own stór.

Brían.

It would be a great help to have your translation on this page. I could do it myself if necessary even though not a native speaker but if there is one already available that would be much appreciated - go raibh míle maith agat!

Hi GUESTPatrickTobin

Note that the previous posting was all of twelve years ago! That said, I'm sure we can dig out a translation for you...

The excellent Joe Heaney archive has his version, with translation, online:

Thanks for that Martin. Joe Heaney made two commercial recordings of Bean an Leanna, the first in 1957 for Gael Linn, and the second in 1964 for Topic.

The Topic was, I believe, reissued on Ossian and I have no idea whether it is still available. The Gael Linn, however was reissued on their excellent Seoltaí Séidte (Setting Sail)-Ceolta Éireann 1957-1961. Gael Linn CEFCD 184.

The only other commercial recording I know of comes from a Cló Iar Chonnachta PRC. Tógfaidh Me Mo Sheolta, where it is sung by Pat Phádraic Tom Ó Conghaile of Spiddal.

Sorry. Should have read the small print at the bottom, which says "This song was taken from a commercial recording: Seosamh Ó hÉanaí (Gael Linn LP CÉF 028 / CEFCD 191-2), 1971; reissued 2007"

Strange, I have a copy of that LP also, but when I searched the song's title, my database didn't bring that one up.
