Subject: RE: Civil War Song to tune of Cottage by the Sea From: Dale Rose Date: 26 Aug 98 - 03:02 PM When in doubt about song titles that sound like they are from long ago, check the Levy Sheet Music Site Just enter Cottage By The Sea in the search frame, then you can choose from the 1856 version, the 1859 version in a lower key, not to mention a parody. I did not find Shells of the Ocean, though. |

Subject: RE: Civil War Song to tune of Cottage by the Sea From: Pete Peterson Date: 26 Aug 98 - 08:16 PM wondering if it is the Carter Family Cottage by the Sea, the chorus of which goes: Then give me back my dear old shack My home by the sea And I never will wander far away from my home, my dear old cottage home with a VERY different melody from the one for which the sheet music was posted. (typical Carter Fam and wonderful!) |

Subject: RE: Civil War Song to tune of Cottage by the Sea From: Irish sergeant Date: 11 Apr 01 - 09:33 PM Scott; Would you Pm the lyrics to me? I've never heard of that song but I would like to see if I can find anything on it too. I would think it is of Confederate origin. Camp Douglas was a prison camp near Chicago. Subject: RE: Civil War Song to tune of Cottage by the Sea From: jaze Date: 12 Apr 01 - 01:13 AM There's a great song called "Cottage By The Sea" on a Foster and Allen tape I have. It may be the one your're looking for. The lyrics are different from the song by the Carter family. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE COTTAGE BY THE SEA From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Jan 04 - 06:27 PM From an American broadside at The Library of Congress American Memory Collection: THE COTTAGE BY THE SEA Jas. Scott, publisher, 226 Race Street, Cincinnati, O. Childhood's days now pass before me, Forms and scenes of long ago; Like a dream they hover o'er me, Calm and bright as evening's glow; Days that knew no shade or sorrow, When my young heart, pure and free, Joyful hailed each coming morrow, In the cottage by the sea. CHORUS: In the cottage by the sea, In the cottage by the sea, Joyful hailed each coming morrow, In the cottage by the sea. Fancy sees the rose-trees twining Round the old and rustic door; And, below, the white beach shining, Where I gathered shells, of yore;-- Hears my Mother's gentle warning, As she took me on her knee; And I feel again life's morning, In the cottage by the sea. CHORUS What though years have rolled above me. Though 'mid fairer scenes I roam, Yet I ne'er shall cease to love thee, Childhood's dear and happy home! And when life's long day is closing, Oh! how pleasant would it be, On some faithful breast reposing, In the cottage by the sea! CHORUS Click here for the sheet music, where it is attributed to J. R. Thomas. |

Subject: Lyr Add: COTTAGE BY THE SEA From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:14 PM Thanks, guest, for calling my attention to the fact that there is at least one more song called COTTAGE BY THE SEA. This is my transcription from the recording on Spotify: COTTAGE BY THE SEA As sung by Kevin Prendergast on "Cottage by the Sea" (2011) I said goodbye to Mayo and lifted my old case. I couldn't bear to see the tears run down my mother's face. My father gave me money, the last few bob he had, Rolled up in a note that read: "Your ever-loving dad." I dried my tears in Dublin as the big ship pulled away. I thought of all the things I wished I hadn't time to say. I started work in London and I thought all day of home In a place so full of people, yet I was all alone. CHORUS: I haven't been to church since I left Ireland. I work on Sundays, I'm ashamed to say. I'm living out of takeaways and tin cans, And, yes, I got your letter yesterday. I lied a little to you when I said that I've done well, But things can change tomorrow; you can never tell. I'm coming home next summer; for you want to sign to me The ten acres and the fishing boat and our cottage by the sea. CHORUS Well, the summers passed so quickly, I never made it home. I'm too old now for working and I'm living on my own, But when I've had too much to drink, through the tears I see The ten acres and the fishing boat and our cottage by the sea. CHORUS [Pat Floody and Pete McMonagle also sing this on the album "Pat Floody & Friends" (2007). Gerry Carney sings it on a "single" as the flip-side of "P.A.D.D.Y." (2010).] |
Subject: Lyr Add: COTTAGE BY THE SEA (Buckley/Sheerin) From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Nov 11 - 01:32 PM Another one— COTTAGE BY THE SEA Written by Jimmy Buckley & Kevin Sheerin As sung by Foster & Allen on "After All These Years" (1985), "Ireland" (1996), "Sincerely" (2002), and "Magic of Foster & Allen" (2004). I don't have many treasures that I can call my own, But one I'm very proud of is a little Irish home. It is no fancy mansion, but it means the world to me. I wouldn't trade it for the world, our cottage by the sea. The day my love and I were wed, we made another vow, No matter where we traveled, we'd never settle down. When we're far away from home our hearts will always be Waiting back in Ireland in our cottage by the sea. CHORUS: Our little cottage back home in Ireland, It's where our hearts will always be. Someday our dreams will turn into reality, And we'll wake up back in Ireland in our cottage by the sea. Many roads I have traveled; many wonders I have seen. I have been to places other people only dream; And as we're now returning, my love and I agree That nothing can compare with our cottage by the sea. CHORUS: Our little cottage back home in Ireland, It's where our hearts will always be. Today our dream will turn into reality As we say hello to Ireland and our cottage by the sea. REPEAT [Also sung by Christine McLean on "Mama Tried" (2006), and by Margo on "Parcel of Dreams" (2006).] |
Subject: Lyr Add: COTTAGE BY THE SEA (Ian Whitcomb) From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Nov 11 - 02:16 PM Yet another one, from Spotify: COTTAGE BY THE SEA Written by Ian Whitcomb As sung by Ian Whitcomb on "Lotusland: A Musical Comedy" (1995). Please picture a scene by Santa Monica Bay, Where peaches and cream lie soaking sunshine all day; But these lovely beach girls aren't your only delight. I'm talking of real pearls: hot property sites. Welcome to your real estate of dreams, Where security shakes its succulent beams! CHORUS: Cottage by the sea, Built for you and me, We'll be fancy-free. Roses round the door, Love on ev'ry floor, Who could ask for more? Scented breezes blow; Tinkling waters flow; Birdies hop upon my windowsill, Trilling such thrilling melodies. They tell of love, Sent from above. When the whippoorwills From the golden hills Banish all our ills, Evening tide I come, When my work is done, When the western sun Is setting. She's getting dinner ready. I'm getting feather-beddy. We'll pull our curtain on our cutesie-wootsie cottage by the sea. [SPOKEN:] Now please picture a little scene by old Santa Monica Bay Where lovely peaches and cream lie soaking sunshine all day; But these spiffy beach girls, why, they're not your only delight. Listen, folks, I'm talking about real pearls: yes, hot property sites. Welcome to your real estate of dreams! Now. let's bring on the vestal virgins to sing. Come on, girls! CHORUS [The album seems to be based on Whitcomb's novel Lotusland: A Story of Southern California (Wildwood House, 1979). Although recent compositions, the songs in this album are written in a retro style that seems appropriate for 1929.] |
