Subject: Hokey Pokey obscene? From: Hollowfox Date: 29 Jan 01 - 02:05 PM One of the perks of librarianship is reading the American Library Association's Newsletter of Intellectual Freedom. Really. It deals with censorship of all kinds, some serious, some foolish. I just got to read the November 2000 issue, and I quote the first sentence:" The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana filed a lawsuit July 7 asking whether the "Hokey Pokey" can be considered a criminal act."It seems that last February, a fight broke out in the parking lot of a "Skate Zone" (roller skating rink). The manager called the sheriff's office, and after they arrived and dealt with the fight, "..disregarding constitutional safeguards, the local authorities entered the Skate Zone and ordered (the manager) to "shut it down". They then conducted a warrent-less search of the premises and seized approximately sixty pre-recorded CDs." Other impounded selections included songs by Britney Spears, Snoop Doggy Dog, Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and the Chicken Dance. (I hope this last hasn't infested itself outside of the United States. |
Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: Hollowfox Date: 29 Jan 01 - 02:21 PM oops, I hit the wrong button. To continue..) Any rap or hip-hop songs were the edited "air play" versions, purchased at the local Wal-Mart. Six days later the manager and owner went to she sheriff's office to "sit down and work something out". They were arrested for contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, handcuffed, body searched, urine tests, the lot. This rink hosted community service programs, etc. The sheriff claimed that the music was corrupting the children of the area. Maybe the Hokey Pokey IS what it's all about! |
Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: NightWing Date: 29 Jan 01 - 02:44 PM You've GOT to be kidding. I would say that here is one sheriff who is going to lose the next election. At the very least for criminal stupidity. If he is going to try to claim that these songs are "contributing to the delinquency of juveniles", he should AT LEAST have had the sense to make the claim as a result of a legal search. The county will have to pay out BIG bucks, and they have not even the vaguest chance of winning. I'm only laughing 'cause it hurts to much to cry.

Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: Rizla the Green Date: 29 Jan 01 - 04:23 PM That was funny, but the programme ususally has a few risque lines...especially the joke at the end after the credits. |

Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: mousethief Date: 30 Jan 01 - 12:47 PM I mean look at it this way: you have a whole song about sticking it in and pulling it out. In, out, in, out, for a full three and a half minutes. Let's face it. That *IS* what it's all about. But obscene? I can't imagine. |
Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: Don Firth Date: 30 Jan 01 - 01:16 PM The way I interpret that, if it weren't for the Hokey Pokey, none of us would be here. Not even the sheriff. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: Blackcatter Date: 30 Jan 01 - 10:52 PM On the other hand, the fact that they confiscated the "Chicken Dance" does give me some hope . . . by the way about the Chicken Dance - I've been told by several German friends that it's actually the "Duck Dance" Any ideas? Tom |
Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: catspaw49 Date: 30 Jan 01 - 10:59 PM Ya' know MT, you'd be a lot more popular if you'd "stick it in and pull it out" for LONGER than 3 and a half minutes........................ Spaw |

Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: LR Mole Date: 31 Jan 01 - 12:02 PM According to the Queen of Foreign Language here at the coll.,the Chicken Dance IS orginally the Duck Dance: very old and from Bavaria. I observed that purely from a percussive viewpoint, it was better to quack than to cluck, and now the department is wandering about muttering, "It's better to quack than to cluck." Higher ed. What a gig. |
Subject: RE: Hokey Pokey: obscene material? From: mousethief Date: 31 Jan 01 - 12:18 PM That was supposed to be touche, except with the last "e" the french one with the accent acute over it. For some reason it disappeared. Test: é Weird. Alex |
