Okay Joe or Max or ..

Why am I having trouble with Forum searches? I try to search for threads I know exist but sometimes they to not come up.

Is there a date limit? Does it search on one word or do I need the whole thread name (which i can't remember) etc?

Any help appreciated.

Richard

I'm not one of the "Joe Clones", but can you give some examples of what you can't find?

I did a search earlier this evening for an old thread which had the word Corinthians, and was able to get to it quickly.

Mind you, I was using the SuperSearch.

Were you using this one or the older Forum Search?

If it was the older Forum Search. There are some problems with it, especially when trying to find a single word in the body of the messages.

Thanks George;

I was looking for a thread on Young British Soldier which I had posted some months back. But I found it with your suggestion of using the Enhanced.

Thanks

Richard

There are so many ways of searching MudCat and DT that you really have to be quite specific about which search is not working for you. I have had trouble lately with the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the left of the main screen, but good luck with the "Forum Search" which is in the Quick Links pull down menu.

I also bookmarked the SuperSearch engine......http://www.mudcat.org/@NewSSResults.cfm

Remember, too, if it was fairly recent it may not show in the SuperSearch right away. If I remember correctly, Max has to do some kind of input every once in awhile to include newsly posted threads; in that instance it is better to use the filter box and set the date.

You can also do a search of all of your own posts by clicking on your name in any post.

Well, I've got a pretty complete explanation in the FAQ - maybe it's too complete, but I tried not to get too wordy.

  • If you're looking for a thread and know part of the thread name, the best (and fastest) thing to use is the FILTER on the Forum Menu page - just put a word or part of a word fror the thread title into the filter box, and set the "age" as appropriate.
  • If you're looking for a particular message or for messages by a particular person, the FORUM SEARCH on QuickLinks is best. I've been trying to rename messages where lyrics are posted, to make they turn up more readily when people use Forum Search.
  • If you're looking for something in the text of a message, then SuperSearch is what you need. Just enter a word or phrase that you recall. However, for this search engine to work, Max has to run an operation that creates an index of the entire Forum. I don't know hat his indexing schedule it, but I know that messages from the last few days usually don't turn up in SuperSearch.

Hope that helps.
