Subject: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: The Sugar Dog (inactive) Date: 29 Jan 01 - 09:16 PM A couple of years ago I purchased a set of 36 collector's cards, HEROES OF THE BLUES, from a bookstore in Chicago I happened upon. (Name? Who knows now???) They were a gift for my husband. Art by R. Crumb, text by Steven (or Stephen) Calt, published by Kitchen Sink Press. Like baseball trading cards, only blues masters! Seen this item? It's wonderful. The blues masters are paintings in the best comix style, and there's a brief bio on the back of each one. Apparently they also came in uncut, frameable printer's sheets. Kitchen Sink Press appears to be defunct, or at least I could not find them. Calt seems to have no website. Amazon has nothing for this product. There is no copyright mark anywhere on the cards or box!!!!! We would love to lend them to the Mudcat to be scanned in for Max's E-Muzine, but we want to be sure there will be no legal challenge to the Mudcat. Any ideas? Contact info for any of the parties involved? Wouldn't YOU love to see them? Wouldn't anyone? Wish I had a scanner myself so I could show you! |

Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Rick Fielding Date: 29 Jan 01 - 09:31 PM Mmmmmmmm Robert Crumb. Major wacko. MAJOR Artist! The cards are great. He did all his drawings from the reprints of those old "race" catalogues. Rick |

Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Dale Rose Date: 29 Jan 01 - 10:29 PM He did the same with a set of old time country cards, which you will find here. Clicking the links on that page will show the card and info about the group, plus the listing at Jane Keefer's Folk Song Database. I think they are still available for about $10 a set, if you know where to look (I've forgotten where I saw them priced ~~ some card seller), though some charge more. That page has been on the net for quite a while, so it looks like they have not gotten in trouble YET. |
Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: The Sugar Dog (inactive) Date: 29 Jan 01 - 10:35 PM Dale, THANKS!! The NAMES over there alone-- oh my! They have Possum Hunters and all sort of stuff!!! I LOVE that stuff! (The music, the whole shebang!) ~Susan (AKA Praise) |
Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Dale Rose Date: 29 Jan 01 - 10:41 PM Yes, the music takes you to another time, for sure. In checking over the list, I see I have at least one ~~ sometimes many more ~~ recordings by every group listed with the exception of Mumford Bean. |

Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Rick Fielding Date: 30 Jan 01 - 10:53 AM You bet, Sugardoggie-dog. The Blues ones, the old timey ones, AND a lot of R. Crumb. When I was an enthusistic (but completely unambitious) cartoonist, Crumb was mah hero. His cover art for Janis Joplin and Blind Boy Fuller was superb. Rick |

Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: GUEST,LEJ Date: 30 Jan 01 - 01:18 PM Well I'd sure love to see 'em! Did anyone see the movie about R Crumb's life? Bizarre and fascinating |
Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: LR Mole Date: 30 Jan 01 - 01:26 PM I have all the blues cards but one. Someone left them on the kitchen table of a house I moved into once. |
Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Dale Rose Date: 30 Jan 01 - 03:22 PM Took me a while to find this: Pioneers Of Country Music at marchantcards.com Looks like $10 for the cards, and $5 for shipping up to $100, then free. They currently have a 10% off sale going. I looked for, but did not locate Heroes of the Blues. They have a search feature, but I am not getting good service at the moment. I think I'd call 1-800-820-5127 for more info if you are really interested. |

Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: wysiwyg Date: 30 Jan 01 - 03:46 PM Dale, I have to go see that one later-- slow ISP now here. But you know, I think I'll spend all the insurance bucks on cards! Mole, which one are you missing, do you know? Or can you PM me a list of what you have so I can "make" you the one that's missing? So funny-- doesn't EVERY house come with these?? Guess not-- youse guys will have to go E-bay for your own set. Maybe someone could buy a set off E-bay to just give Max outright?? AND A SET TO AUCTION, SO THAT WOULD MAKE IT OK TO SCAN THEM ALL IN FOR THE AUCTION?? ~S~ |
Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: GUEST,Mike Billo Date: 30 Jan 01 - 03:59 PM I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the third set in the trilogy, "Early Jazz Greats". Equally brilliant. The "Heroes Of The Blues" is online through Glenn Weiser's links. Sorry I don't have the URL, but a web search for Glenn Weiser will turn it up. |

Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Stewie Date: 30 Jan 01 - 09:17 PM Dale, the 2 Mumford Bean waltzes have been reissued on 'Mississippi String Bands Vol 2' Document DOCD-8028. Given that it's Document and the rarity of the record, the sound is excellent. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Guy Wolff Date: 30 Jan 01 - 09:37 PM I have heard great things about these cards!! I have a friend in Wisconcin that told me I had to get a set so thanks for all the information!! Now if we could just play ot the calaber of Lonnie Johnson or Robert or Blind Blake !!!!! all the best Guy <><>><><><>>><><> |
Subject: RE: HEROES OF THE BLUES, Card Set From: Rick Fielding Date: 30 Jan 01 - 09:45 PM Yup Leej. Saw the Crumb movie several times. Like watching a train wreck. Perhaps the most disfunctional family I've ever encountered. Watching R trying to relate to his son was painful. However I DID learn that his particular hobby "Pony Culture" is actually a recognized, ummm, shall we say "sexual alternative" with websites and very talkative adherents. God I'm straight! A jazz series eh? Right up my alley. Rick |
