Subject: RE: WANTED: DROP KICK ME JESUS ... From: GUEST,Wendy Date: 31 Jan 01 - 06:17 PM otters: Hello Bare, when you performed "Drop Kick Me Jesus," what was your inspirtation for that song? Bobby Bare: I didn't write that song, it was written by Paul Kraft. When Bill Clinton was elected President, there was a story in Newsweek, it said he liked Big Macs and fries and horn music because he is a sax player, and blonde headed women, red-headed women..., but his favorite song was "Drop Kick Me Jesus" by Bobby Bare. I haven't figured out if I'm flattered or not, but I play it every night. That quote is from here: Live Fan Chat with the Old Dogs I think Bobby Bare's version is the one I've heard, but I'm not certain, and have not yet found a sound clip to confirm.

Subject: RE: WANTED: DROP KICK ME JESUS ... From: Ferrara Date: 01 Feb 01 - 02:27 PM Gene, this is a wonderful music site! Bill (D) called me in and said, "Rita.... Gene has done it again.... " then he just started playing one of the songs. We spent about an hour playing song after song. Sean, "Plastic Jesus" and the Berrymans' song "Are You Drinking With Me Jesus" are satirical and tongue in cheek. They are ment to be send-ups of certain types of country gospel songs. "Drop Kick Me, Jesus, Through the Goal Posts of Life" REALLY IS a country gospel song of the type being parodied. It's not tongue in cheek and not a parody. Just listen to it as sung by Bobby Bare if you doubt this. Another in this genre is "The Royal Telephone," which is also on the Rose's Country Music Site (see Gene's link). |
Subject: RE: WANTED: DROP KICK ME JESUS ... From: SeanM Date: 01 Feb 01 - 05:01 PM I suppose, then, that 'DKMJ' illustrates the fine line between extreme earnestness and parody... I'd never thought that the writer was serious. Oh well... M |
Subject: RE: WANTED: DROP KICK ME JESUS ... From: GUEST,Gene Date: 01 Feb 01 - 05:45 PM Another site worth BOOKMARKING IS- |
Subject: RE: WANTED: DROP KICK ME JESUS ... From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 01 - 07:03 PM ...about parodies and tongue in cheek songs and real sentiment.... We hi-tech, erudite collectors sometimes don't realize just how seriously some of the gospel or 'sentimental' stuff is/was taken by the 'folk'. Many of the "Gospel Metaphor" songs, though a bit far-fetched, were meant to MEAN something! There were churches which didn't approve of music which was not about religion, so songs were written using symbolism and metaphor just to have more to sing about!..("Life is Like a Mountain Railroad" etc..) look at this verse to an already sancimonious song: "Farther Along"
If workin' and prayin' have any reward- (collected in Texas by a friend of mine at a little church..he swears they were singing it seriously) and another friend collected this in a church in western Kansas:
"One , two, three, the Devil's after me 'Most' of the folks who sing things like "Drop Kick...." are aware that it is being clever and cute, but many are STILL expressing real fervor and sincerity at the same time....it is well to be careful how you present it if you have any doubts about the attitude of your audience, |
Subject: RE: WANTED: DROP KICK ME JESUS ... From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 01 - 08:05 PM [This is Ferrara, actually]... Helen Schneyer tells of starting to sing one of the songs from her "Hideobilia" collection at a church or social gathering in Appalachia. It may have been, "Where is My Wandering Boy Tonight?" but anyway, it was a song she usually hams up a bit. She looked out at the audience and they were singing along, with fervor, and obviously were completely in agreement with the sentiments in the song. She says that's one time she sang it straight! |

Subject: RE: WANTED: DROP KICK ME JESUS ... From: kimmers Date: 03 Feb 01 - 08:00 PM Bill D, you mentioned "Life is Like a Mountain Railroad". Any idea where the lyrics might be? I used to love that one. It's corny, but sorta sweet. And I'd much rather listen to classic corny American gospel than the saccharine Christian pop that my staff likes to listen to... |
