Subject: How best to sell a guitar?
From: Noreen
Date: 03 Feb 01 - 05:07 PM

A friend has two guitars to sell, in the region of 1,000 to 1,500 UKPounds. They've been with an agent for 17 months with no success- I suggested that some Mudcatter(s) might be able to advise? Location is Manchester, UK.

Any information gratefully received.

Noreen

I thought about the Mudcat Auctions- would this be a good way of doing it? Is it not done to ask about such things? Anybody? Please?

Noreen Guitars of that price range have to be in very good condition to sell. I would try Whitby in August. Bill

Noreen, there are many free classified ad web sites on the Internet and there is usually a section reserved for musical instruments and even acoustic guitars. You could find quite a few using the keywords "classified ads" in a search engine.

For now here are a few good ones. Have your friend post ads and descriptions with these. Good luck.

Can;t believe more people haven't checked this one out, Noreen. Surely Rick (in Canada) or Justa Picker (in US) should know something.......that is a chunk for an instrument, tho.

You can always do ebay with the reserve. Might get even higher price that way.

What brands are they Noreen. Some of the finest English brands are simply not well enough known to fetch decent prices in Canada. Pretty sure it's the same in the States (what do you think, Justa?)

Lowden, of course has a high profile, but I've seen a few Fyldes that went for very little here.

Rick, I know one is a Martin cutaway because I have held it ...and played three chords on it... Can't remember the other make, but will find out more info. I know very little about geetars, as you can probably tell! :0(

Agree with Rick, (with of course Lowdens being the exception.)

Thanks, folks. One is a Henry SJ Deluxe and the other a Martin Acoustic cutaway DCEM. I hope this means something to you...

The DCEM? Perhaps you mean DCME? The DCME (a "Road Series" Martin Dreadnought)lists for $1350 US new, and street level prices are less (they vary, but not much).

Remember that the USD/GBP exchange rate is usually 1.00 or less for guitars and technology items, but I'd agree that the prices are possibly a bit high.

Incidentally, I have two guitars for sale at the moment, a 1978 Daion Mugen '78 for GBP250.00 and a rare, never-catalogued (Prototype?) Japanese-made Washburn J200 copy for GBP300.

Both have cases and the Mugen has a pickup fitted.

Anyone interested can PM me.

Alan

Thanks, gray rooster, for correcting the name and for the pricing info. Seems like the festival route could be the best way of selling these.

Thanks again, all.

That Mugen is seriously underpriced. Mine is insured for GBP 750 and I have seen a twin-neck (one 12 string, one 6) in ANdy's (Denmark Street) for GBP 1,800, about 4 years ago.

Get rid of the agent. After 17 months with no sale, he's marketing them to the wrong people, or the prices are too high,or both.
