Here is a song I remembered as we were discussing Songs about getting older. I figured I'd post it this was so it would be easily recognized as a new song for the DT.

If you'd like to hear the song, click here. I don't know who's singing it but they're doing a nice job.

      - Mark

That Sliver-Haired Daddy of Mine

Gene Autry

In a vine covered shack in the mountains,   (D)
Bravely fighting the battle of time,   (A7)
Is a dear one who's weathered life's sorrows,   (D, G)
'Tis that silver-haired daddy of mine.   (D, A7, D)

Refrain:
If I could recall all the heartache,   (D)
Dear old Daddy I've caused you to bear,   (G, D)
If I could erase the lines from your face,   (A7, D)
And bring back the gold to your hair,   (E, A)
If God would but grant me the power,   (D)
Just to turn back the pages of time,   (A7)
I'd give all I own if I could but atone,   (D, D7, G)
To that silver-haired daddy of mine.   (D, A7, D)

I know it's too late dear old daddy,
To repay all the sorrow and care,
But dear Mother is waiting in heaven,
Just to comfort and solace you there.

(Refrain)

Aw, Mark, ya gone done and made me cry. Really. This was one of my dad's favorites, and he left us in 1989. I can't listen to it anymore, and I just discovered that I can't read it either.

Sorcha, I know what you mean. I lost my dad in '91 and boy did I need to atone. Fortunately we got that part covered quite a while before his death.

This song seems to evoke strong feelings of guilt among those who like it best. A couple a years ago a group of us were jamming at the Uncle Dave Macon Celebration, in Murphreesboro, Tennessee when a gentleman stepped up and asked us to play this song. We, of course obliged, but afterewards I almost wished we hadn't. That old boy stood there and wailed and blubbered the whole time, I mean tears were pouring down his cheeks. Just thought I 'd pass that along

Mark,
That's the Everly Brothers' recording of "Silver Haired Daddy". It's on their "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us" album. Although this recording is from a live concert. Despite accusations of "sickeningly sweet" from one of our resident curmudgeons, the Brothers did some wonderful things on that album - "Put My Little Shoes Away", "Rocking Alone In An Old Rocking Chair". an Appalachian "Barbara Allan", "The Lightenin' Express",etc. It is obviously one of my favorites. They also do a rendition of "Kentucky" that is uncannily like the Blue Sky Boys' version.

Sinsull, I confess it did occur to me that it could be the Everlys but it wasn't arranged and produced in their familiar style and I decided it must not be them after all. Now I'll have to go find a copy of that album somewhere.

Thanks,

The recording I have is Gene Autry. A clear, mellow baritone, just like my daddy.

Sorcha, If I'm not mistaken, Gene Autry wrote the song. It was a big hit for him early in his career.

SINSULL, Thanks, I'll check it out.

You're right, Mark. Gene wrote it.

It's one of the most requested songs from my songbook, which can be (shamelessly) found at:

No, I missed that. When I saw the one I (successfully) bid on, the description sounded good and the seller seemed reliable so I went for it. Can't wait to hear it.

Whoever was wondering who was singing the song on the website they linked us to, it was Simon & Garfunkel. Theyre incredible, I love their stuff, and the tour... I'm drooling over it, and I'm barely 17. That'll be refreshing--a concert where the musicians are triple the age of part of their audience. Anyway, just thought you should know.

Thanks for this Mark...the old cowboy neighbor I play with occasionally loves this song...it will be a pleasure to learn it and sing it for or with him. The site you gave clicky for was silent for me...maybe my iMac doesn't have what it takes to play great old sentimental songs ...(I couldn't get the horses to sing, either)

Well I've been enjoying my Everly Brothers album from eBay for over 2½ years now—great album—and Nagrom is correct, I'll have to go look up the Simon and Garfunkel recording. The site actually credits S&G. I either missed that before or the attribution was added since this thread was started.

Mudlark, The site still plays the song but it's all driven by JavaScript. It also may require the Microsoft Media Player. If your iMac doesn't support Java, I think you can get a Java virtual machine (VM) for it at Sun's java.com download site. Also I think Microsoft published more software titles for the Mac than any other company, they may have MS Media Player for your iMac as well.

I decoded the HTML from the site with the song and found it plays a file called SimonGarfunkelSilverHairedDaddy.wav. I also discovered that you can replace the last term of the URL with the file name to create a new URL that will invoke your local WAV player and let you listen. The resulting URL is then…
http://www.geocities.com/babybird4rd/SimonGarfunkelSilverHairedDaddy.wav
Good luck,

      - Mark

NB: If you aren't careful, the site will put CometCursor on your system and soon you'll be a curser. If that happens, use Ad-Aware or similar program that removes spyware.

Who woulda thunk Simon & Garfunkel would ever record such a thing! But it sounds wonderful. Apparently it's from a 3-CD boxed set called "Old Friends" Columbia/Legacy CD 65429, 2001.

The Everly Brothers did record it, and I'd bet they were the inspiration for S&G. It was also recorded by Gene Autry, Wilf Carter, Johnny Cash, Ferlin Husky, Patsy Montana, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, The Sons of the Pioneers, Doc Watson, and Slim Whitman.

Hank Snow wrote and sang a song called "The Answer to 'That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine.' "

Thank you Ragnom,
