Folk is my favorite music, but most people find it really weird that after listening to Thistle and Shamrock, i can can change over and listen to korn, Metallica, Randy travis, Everclear, etc, without missing a beat. Especially the kids that i work with, then again they think i'm 15 years older than i really am:/. Anyone else like this.

I have a penchant for ambient stuff, rock, grunge, metal, some pop-type stuff, dodgy musicals and occasionally banging techno. But folk/trad wins every time.

Jazz mostly, and blues, and (er) skiffle, then folk and 50's rock and roll.

Celtic , blues , bluegrass, old time and folk are my favorites hands down but every once and a while I have to crank up some Rolling Stones, Prince, James Brown or something else equally funky and let loose. And it needs to be loud. I wonder how many Mudcatters feel the need to go out and dance from time to time.

I'm a cowboy singer. I don't listen to anything but cowboy music because I think it's important to be true to your roots. (However, when nobody else is around I *might* put on Robert Earl Keen, Placido Domingo, Spike Jones, Beethoven, John Hiatt, the Trio Los Panchos, Buck Owens, Chris Spheeris, Karen Brooks (what a voice!), Julio Iglesias, Benny Goodman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the early Beatles, Mel Torme, Art Tatum, flamenco, or Eric Clapton. Or I might look on the *second* shelf of my CD rack. Pretty sure I've got some Puccini, Gilbert and Sullivan and Tom Lehrer down there.)

There is very little I don't like, and even less I can't sing along to. I like opera, operetta, foreign language stuff, country... I enjoy singing folk/trad most, and that is what is mostly in my car, since I like to sing there, but really the only things I don't like are (most) rap and (most) modern jazz... Oh, and I don't really like non-Western (in the sense of the tonal scale) music very much, but I think that is a lack of familiarity thing. I hear a lot of rap and modern jazz and I really don't like it. Most of it, I hedge.

I am a HUGE cowboy music freak (cowboypoet, would I know you?) plus I love rock music and classical too. In my CD case today I have Goo Goo Dolls, Richard Ashcroft, Sarah McLachlan, Tom Russell, Don Edwards, Bryan Adams, and David Gray. Next week it could be Brahms. :)

70s punk music. The Clash, the Ramones, etc. Call me strange, but I see a total paralel between the early punk movement and classic folk music... just more drums, distortion on guitars and cooler clothes.

Opera, Frank Sinatra, medieval, music hall, Queen, Cole Porter, music from the '20s, '30s, and '40s, Patsy Cline, oldies from the '50s and '60s, Philip Glass, Welsh Male Choirs, Elvis. Who can choose just one style? Hildegard Von Bingen is just as good as Copulatin' Blues. It all depends on your mood... ;-}

Reliving my teenage disco years with 60s pop, soul and old Tamla Motown! Still got a lot of original 45s. I have broad tastes in classical music, but it tends to be Baroque/Classical/Romantic periods mainly. I also like Juluka (aka Savuka), Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Queen, Quo, Moody Blues, Walker Brothers, Beatles, and bits of many, many other types of music, even occasionally Metallica apparently! Trouble is, I just hear tracks that I like and never remember whose they are. Latest favourite album: "Born" by Bond. Even my metalhead daughter has gone and bought it. Still, she is a classically trained pianist, and has listened to my tastes all her life!

Today it was the birds!
After weeks of there being nothing but rooks cawing and the odd robin letting off an indignant peep, the birds started singing again; marking out territories and beginning the search for a mate.
Spring is on the way, the sap is rising! Sorry, thread-drift, I know, but at this time of year it's still one of the best sounds there is....

I listen to traditional music about half the time, I guess. Mostly Northern or Eastern European, Central Asian, Siberian, Mongolian, Russian (not ethnic-Russian, though), Chinese (only sometimes Han Chinese, though), 'pre-war' blues, various styles of American and Western European folk, etc.

The rest of the time, I listen to... Well, I DON'T listen to: western 'classical' music; country/western; cheesy Kenny G-type jazz; teenage pop junk (all kinds)/boy-bands; modern r&b; lame pop-metal bands; lame pop-punk bands; white rap; 'white oldies' radio stations; gospel; 'contemporary christian;' Latin (like Ricky Martin); mullet-rock... So much music to hate. ;)

I'll be positive here: I just listened to Shonen Knife, Szeki Kurva (Fighting Cocks), Dead Kennedys, Iron Maiden, Bikini Kill, Cat Stevens, Laibach, Death Piggy, Ween, Björk, the Misfits, Bruce McCulloch, Nick Cave, Suede, GWAR, Tricky, Pavement, Dr.Octagon, and the Legendary Jim Ruiz Group mp3s. (I didn't list the folk/blues mp3s I also listened to) Now I'm listening to Lard. :)

Ella, do you mean "Yellow"?

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do
They were all yellow

I wrote a song
I wrote a song for you
And all the things that you do
And it was called "Yellow"...

I like Western classical music (unless it's bad), and traditional ethnic music of most cultures, though Klezmer and some Irish folk music start sounding too jumpy after a while...

there's really nothing I hate, except maybe monotoned, angry, bashing hard rock. And, maybe I've been angry enough to even enjoy that, once or twice.

I loved contemporary and old folk music several years ago, then got very tired of it and wouldn't even listen to it. Basically, wouldn't listen to anything. Now, after listening to my daughter and her friends -- who seem to all (usually) prefer very aggressive, bashing, angry crap -- I've come running back to the music of gentlemen and ladies, i.e., folk music.

I'll add that my daughter does also like other music...she and her friends just don't happen to play it.

CD's are expensive so my CD collection is almost all folk. Cassettes were expensive so my cassettes are almost all folk. My radio stations... well, I can't get folk on the radio up here anymore.

So when I feel like a change of pace I turn to my record collection and listen to the Allman Brothers, ELP (Emerson Lake, and Palmer), the Beatles, Queen, Moody Blues, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Simon and Garfunkle, etc. (Have I dated myself?)

And my next CD purchase? DICK DALE!
