Is it me or does coffee machine coffee always taste better? Is it me or are things that taste great always bad for you? Is it me or are Ariens bossy? (Sorry, any Ariens!) Is it me or do TV programmes get taken off the air just as you're beginning to enjoy them?

Any more questions you're dying to have answered?

as far as the coffee goes - it's you! *grin*

And I think it's a rule that the better I like a TV show the less it will get broadcast.

Lots of things taste great to me - some of them must be good for me - how about spinnach?

MMario, I agree with you about the tv shows....I get to liking them, and they get cancelled....why I stopped watching that thing....figured I was jinxing everything...

Is it just me, or is it TV that makes it true that if you watch one episode of something and then don't watch it for years, when you watch it again, it will be the SAME episode?

And it depends on the machine, there was a machine that made coffee at Eaton Hall at Tufts that I'd climb the bloody hill to drink, it was so yummy, no other coffee ever tasted the same. I used to get it and play Asteroids, and this was many moons ago. Then I saw someone with an Asteroids screen saver the other day - and suddenly, I could taste the Eaton Hall coffee machine coffee again! LOL!

Firecat, I agree about the TV shows. Our coffee machine at work makes GREAT coffee. It's premeasured so only an idiot could possibly screw it up. Disagree about the food part. I could fix you lots of things that are good for you and taste great.

Mrzzy that has happened to me more times than I can count... I rarely watched Hill Street Blues (who remembers that? That was the 80s) and the two times I did watch it, it was the same episode. I thought it was just me!

I've never found a coffee machine that makes good coffee and only met one person who didn't drink coffee that could actually brew a decent pot of it. Television will always work that way it's a conspiracy. Are Ariens more bossy? Don't know I tend to ignore bossy people. They send you to jail here if you B&*%#h-slap them like they deserve. Besides, I'm a lover not an athelete. And there is plenty of food that tastes great and is good for you. If you don't believe it you need to quit eating in fast food joints. Kindest reguards, Neil

ALL coffee tastes godawful, but coffee machine coffee is the gutrotting, stomach-churning, piss-poor, friggin' WORST!!!

"Ariens"? Do you mean Aryans or do you mean people of the sign Aries? Damned if I know, I'm usually totally unaware of what sign anybody is unless they make it a point to remind me about it frequently. I used to drive a Dodge Aries, but I don't think that helps, does it?

I don't watch TV either. Used to but don't anymore. Same as with the coffee.

I find that most of the stuff that's "good for me" tastes great.

Sorry, I just can't seem to get with your theme here...

It is not possible to make good coffee in a coffee machine. The usual procedure is garbage in garbage out.

To each his own Little Hawk, I on the other had make fabulous coffee, Melita drip or bushman's, when I have a supply of properly roasted beans and our own beautiful volcanic rock, well water.

Oh dear, Firecat, it IS you! I was once like you, it goes with the student phase of your life. It then turns you into someone who will drink anything with the "coffee" label attached. With age has come wisdom and discernment, and coffee machines are to be only used in emergency!

Not only that, you seem to be turning into a TOG! Terry Wogan's biography is called "Is it me?" I suppose at your age you must be a TYG.

Wow, I'm not the only one with the TV repeats problem, which I had defined as Penny's Law of TV repeats. Slightly different though is the inverse form - "If I have only missed one episode of a program, then that will be the episode I miss when it is repeated."

OK, sorry I haven't looked back at this thread before but I've been too busy, what with boyfriends and Young Archaeologists and homework and such like. Anyway, here's my replies. (This might take a while so bear with me!)

Jon, I hate spinach, it makes me feel sick.

Irish sergeant, the last time I ate in a fast food restaurant, it was a drive thru McDonalds and it was my birthday. Dad doesn't really let me go to fast food restaurants, cos he thinks it's not proper food.

Little Hawk, I mean people of the star sign Aries (mind you, I'm a Capricorn and my boyfriend's a Gemini).

Mouldy, I don't listen to Terry Wogan, apart from when Dad's giving me a lift to college. Usually I listen to either Trax FM (Doncaster and Bassetlaw), Viking FM (Yorkshire and Lincolnshire) and Lincs FM (from the Wash to the Humber). I'm definitely NOT a TYG. (What does it stand for anyway????)

Penny S, I also had the problem where if you miss a programme, that'll be the one you miss when it's repeated. I used to love No Sweat, which was a programme starring a band called North And South. First time round, I missed the whole series because I had a cello lesson when it was on, second time round, I saw all of it except the last two episodes, this time because I was on the Russian exchange with school and the parents didn't tape it for me!! I watched all of the second series twice through though (original broadcast times AND repeats.)

They're all heartbreakers, Matt...

Well, not really, but it sounded good, didn't it?

Sophocleese - You left out the apostrophe in "it's" twice! For shame! Hee, hee!

Firecat - I think it IS just you. Or maybe it's just me, as sophocleese suggests. On the other hand, maybe it isn't either one of us...a disturbing thought, that.

TYG The Young Geezer. I appear to be a confirmed TOG... I play steering wheel bongos and whinge about my chair.... I also do keyboard castanets too, but that is a different story.

It is definately you with the coffee, although we had a chocolate drink machine at work that got downsized to a jug of warm purple water. Funny how using the same ingredients, two people can make the same item taste completely different....

And yes, I always catch the same episode again, or miss the same one. Even when I video things, you can guarantee that the film/eposide I've been after for years is the one I entrust to the computer programming husband to record. I inevitably get 45 mins of the other side, usually a documentary about treacle mines or a soap omnibus...

Firecat, Machine coffee was always OK with me, maybe 'cause I didn't know any better in my twenties or I had never seen the miracle of birth and death in a coffee cup before then. One morning at coffeebreak my coworkers and I lined up at the coffee machine to get our much needed fix of caffeine. Everyone got their coffee and returned to the shop to talk and cajole each other. All except one, Goodie was late. We had all just about finished our coffee when we heard Goodie cursing in the next room where the coffee machine was located. We went to see what he was so upset about. He held up his cup and floating in the coffee were two baby mice. He said "Hope you enjoyed your coffee this morning." That's why to this day I don't do machine coffee. At least not very often. wdat12

When I was Firecat's age (seeing as how I was merely an art student, and not overburdened with work) I was in sole charge of the coffee machine in the corridor outside the 6th form common room. I had to clean and refill it. Perks for the job? A freebie drink every day: I had chocolate! There were some weird smells (sulphur dioxide/formalin) around that machine, but I assure you that they were from honestly conducted/cocked-up science experiments from the labs which also shared the corridor, and from the A-level biologists' preserved dogfish. The smell of formalin followed those students wherever they went!

No livestock in MY machine! And "mouldy" has nowt to do with the state of that machine!

Ah, well you see, Matt, this was all before I got to art college: I was merely coasting along in the high school timetable with 17 free periods a week. Other A-level subject was needlework. (It was 1969/70 and things were different). I did spend a lot of free time in the art room, but when it's full of 11 year olds it ain't much fun. Still in touch with my teacher, though.

I then went on to do 4 years at art school - one locally for the foundation course, and 3 doing Graphic Design in London - which were full 5 day weeks with late working on Wednesdays. There were also several all-night sessions too. I've been there, pal! Drunk the coffee too! The worst I ever had was at Derby art college, but hey, I wasn't in charge of that machine!

HI Mouldy,

I think I developed my ability to stay awake till the wee small hours whilst I was studying Graphic Design at Uni. After foundation, I used to wake up at 11/12am and then work through til 4am. We had the horrid vendpac coffee too.. I hated the most, the beef or tomato soup ones... NOT the smell you wanted to smell when you were hungover, from over indulging in the uni bar...

I remember having a raging headache, I was meant to be setting a load of 12pt lead type in the print room and I couldn't focus, then the smell from the Vendpac machine finally did me in.. and I had to retire to the house, and spend the rest of the afternoon recovering.

Never trusted corporate coffee since my schooldays, when I conducted a terribly childish vendetta against the 6th form capitalist running dogs who were the only ones allowed to run the tea urn (and make an exorbitant profit).
It started with a couple of rugby socks chucked in the urn and worked its way up to full chemical warfare - the most potent solution being a mixture of butyric acid (the acid which gives stale sweat its rancid smell) and methyl isocyanide (a truly unique and disugusting stench).
Just a teaspoonful under the counter where the urn was parked was enough to bring the whole tea-making operation to a halt. In the end they had to call the caretaker in to scrub and repaint the entire room, but the smell lingered for a couple of months.
Of course, any offspring of mine contemplating such a course of action would deserve to feel the full majesty of the law!

Liz, I know I've been accused of having regal airs and graces before now, but I've never had porphyria. I did once paint my giblets with Day-Glo, but that's quite another matter (I've probably told you about it, but I'll tell you again in exchange for a pint of summat! I'm too old for demonstrations though).

Curious footnote to the law of TV repeats, originally derived in my case with reference to Star Trek. Last night, I and a friend found ourselves watching an original episode in which Kirk et al end up facing Kitten Kong from the Goodies which neither of us could ever remember having seen before. In addition, it included a sighting of a guest star who seemed to be an answer to "what happened to ..." an ex-fellow-pupil from one of the schools I went to. She went into acting, had a good part in an Oscar nominated film, went to Hollywood and disappeared. Many years later, someone who looked like her, sounded like her and moved like her appeared in a detective series, but with a different name. This was the same lookalike, again with a different name. I'm sure I would have noticed her if I had seen the episode before! Odd.

You really want to know?
It was one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time. I was living in Lowestoft and, with a friend, was working on a project for the Edinburgh Festival. We wanted to do something absurd, so we came up with the idea of staging 2001 - A Space Odyssey - in the back of a Hillman Avenger (a small and rather naff saloon car). The idea was that we would have an audience of one (in the passenger seat), the driver would be the stage manager and look after the techie stuff (like cueing the music on the car's cassette player) and two would act out the protean drama on the back seat, with a black velvet curtain dividing the car in two.
We'd got the ape costumes sorted, space costumes were knocked up from boiler suits, vacuum cleaner hose and old crash hats and props were found.
What we needed, though, was something to sum up the glinting stars and the trippiness of Kubrik's movie.
Then we hit on using a 12-volt UV strip and fluorescent paint. Many a happy hour was spent blobbing stars onto black cloth to line the rear of the car, and painting little suns and moons to shine under the UV light (the way your dandruff takes on a praeternatural glow in discos, for those old enough to remember such horrors).
Then we got onto the vodka. By the end of the evening the four of us had someone taken our clothes off and painted our giblets variously pink, yellow, orange and blue and were leaping around lit only by the UV light. As you do.
It did look bloody weird - like a flock of stunted psychedelic turkeys invading an acid trip! The more so because this was inn a basement flat on Lowestoft seafront, and people walking by could peer in and see this bizarre spectacle.
Anyway, minus the giblets, 2001 in the car was a resounding success - eight performances, total audience of eight, and pisstaking coverage in all sorts of earnest Dutch and Norwegian newspapers. Where everyone else's efforts were listed by venue -"Godot - in the Assembly Rooms", we got "2001 - ERT 940J, parked on the corner of..."
And no, Ella, it doesn't sting - not if you use the water-based type. But you do need a UV light and no other ambient light for the full effect.
Sorry, where was I? Nurse....!

One of my old school friends did it to a creep at the library where she worked. And she was in charge of the children's section too!

Ella - I've still got my old portfolio. I don't know how the hell I ever hand-set 6/8pt times for one of the letterheads. Is this why I need varifocals now?

I did my eyes in trying to tranlsate old copperplate script in ancient and mouldering church records, so I regret to say that size is not important..... My left eye is getting better and my right eye is getting worse. I went from being long sighted (had to look over my glasses to see the conductor, but through them to read the music) to the reverse - can read OK, but need binoculars to see across the room!

Gervase, you hadn't told me that, and I'm grateful - it would have meant the ambulance for sure. And I'm not sure who for!!!

Seeing as how I did the daft thing and lived miles from the college (literally - W4 to SE1 each morning) most of my social life revolved around the pubs in the home area. Every other weekend I used to go back home to the midlands, having a fiance who was working shifts down t'pit and who couldn't always get down south. Our college (London College of Printing), being more of a tech and a non-campus affair, wasn't great on social activities anyway. The majority of its students were day-release or block-course from the industry. Still, my nights out down Richmond on Thames and the Tudor Rose(?) at the bottom of Star and Garter Hill were great. It was a crusade for real ale even in those days! The gang my bloke hung around with were the lads in the local darts team up home. But hey, I have been the only female on a darts club weekend trip to Blackpool!

Should have partied more. I only got a third!

Andrea
