Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET VIOLETS From: Alex Date: 13 Dec 96 - 12:48 AM The SWEET VIOLETS I know are nothing like those above and the version I have of Young Farmer goes: There was a young farmer who sat on a rick, Bawling and shouting and waving his Fist at a lady who sat on the rocks Teaching young boys how to play with their Bows and their arrows and weapons of yore When along came a lady who looked like a Decent young lady who walked like a duck, She said she had found out a new way to Educate the children to sew and to knit, While the men of the manor were shovelling Muck from the barnyard and dirt from the byre Where the lord of the manor was pulling his Horse from the stable to go on the hunt While the lady of the manor was powdering her Face - what did you think I was going to say? I'll sing it another day. Kinda like THE CLEAN SONG by Oscar Brand - I'll see if I can find SWEET VIOLETS |

Subject: RE: Sweet Violets lyrics From: dick greenhaus Date: 14 Dec 96 - 09:42 AM Hi- The song falls into the category of what Ed Cray calls "teasers." THe version from Alarose was a pop song of the 1950's; Alex's somewhat raunchier one is older (I heard it in the early 1940's). To the best of my knowledge, Alarose's version is complete as recorded. You can see variations on the theme in some versions of Lulu, Shine Your Buttons With Brasso, and several others. |
Subject: RE: Sweet Violets lyrics From: jfisher @csn.net Date: 05 Jan 97 - 12:31 AM Steve, I do Alarose's version with another verse at the end. The Farmer decided to wed anyway, and started in planning for his wedding suit, which he purchased for only a buck, then he found out he was just out of money, and so he got left in the lurch, standing and waiting in front of the end of this story, which just goes to show, that all a girl wants from a man is his Sweet Violets....
