Subject: Recording of Good Morning Blues From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 18 Feb 01 - 03:48 PM I've been trying on and off for a couple of years to find a recording of "Good Morning Blues", specifically of Leadbelly singing it. I have a lesson on the blues with this song, and would love to have the kids hear it. I had an order in to Amazon, but they were not able to complete the order. So: anyone here willing to help me find a copy? |

Subject: Lyr Add: GOOD MORNING BLUES (Leadbelly) From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Nov 03 - 02:03 AM We have a thread on a parody, but we never got the actual lyrics posted for this one. -Joe Offer- GOOD MORNING BLUES Good morning blues, Blues how do you do? Good morning blues, Blues how do you do? I'm doing all right, good morning how are you? I laid down last night, turnin' from side to side, Aw... turnin' from side to side, I was not sick, but I was just dissatisfied. When I got up this mornin', blues walkin' 'round my bed, Aw... blues walkin' 'round my bed I went to eat my breakfast, the blues was all in my bread. I got a new way of spelling, Memphis, Tennessee, Aw... Memphis, Tennessee, Double E, double T, Lord, N, X-Y-Z. I sent for you yesterday, here you come a-walking today, Sent for you yesterday, here you come a-walking today, You got your mouth wide open - you don't know what to say.
This Google Search will show how many versions of this song you can find - Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Van Morrison, Louis Jordan, and many others. Click to play |
Subject: RE: Help: Recording of Good Morning Blues From: Stewie Date: 02 Nov 03 - 03:51 AM The Catfish label that I mentioned above a couple of years ago went out of business a couple of months ago - a pity, as it had some fine reissue albums. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Help: Recording of Good Morning Blues From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 02 Nov 03 - 06:04 AM As it happens, I did find a good recording of Leadbelly talking about how you know "the blues got you", followed by the song. I don't have it here, but I do remember it was an import! |
Subject: RE: Help: Recording of Good Morning Blues From: Billy Weeks Date: 02 Nov 03 - 06:57 AM It may not be of much help to anyone who doesn't collect 78s, but some time around the 1950s Melodisc (UK) issued Leadbelly's 'Good Morning Blues' with 'How Long' backing on Catg No 1140. Rush now while stocks last? |
Subject: RE: Help: Recording of Good Morning Blues From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 03 Nov 03 - 03:35 AM Stewie, bad news, I've had some good stuff from them. Ani, Smithsonian Folkways have put out most of Ledbelly's stuff, I've too many Ledbelly records & CDs to search though at the moment (lazy b****r!) but I'm sure Dick at Camsco could identify the right one for you. Subject: RE: Help: Recording of Good Morning Blues From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 03 Nov 03 - 03:52 AM Quick Amazon US search brings up Leadbelly: Take this hammer 2003 RCA B000092Q47 $13.98 (26 tracks including Good Morning Blues). Customer review 5 stars & comments on better quality sound than usual for Leadbelly recordings. Hope this helps. RtS (one of my 60th birthday presents was the 4-CD "Last sessions", one CD entirely a capella with some singing and interjections from Martha Ledbetter, fascinating) |
