Subject: Altan play with Dolly !! From: GUEST,Sam Pirt Date: 21 Feb 01 - 03:27 PM Hi I listen to loads of different music and with Dolly Partons new release 'Little Sparrow' I thought I would check it out. I was paticularly suprised to see that on a number of tracks she has members of Altan (Irelands BEST band in my opinion) featuring. I have to say it works really well and the album is really good with some very nice chords, runs, musicianship and singing! But what do all of you catters (paticularly American) make of it? Cheers, Sam |

Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: Julia Date: 21 Feb 01 - 05:43 PM I think it's a great match. If you really listen to her voice it is remarkably like the Sean nos singing. We were in Ireland a few years ago and heard a traveller woman sing a-capella with lots of ornamentation "I Love You in the Most Peculiar Way" She liked the song and sang it the way she knew how. The Irish are great that way- It's all just music to them! |

Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: Hotspur Date: 21 Feb 01 - 09:01 PM I have a live CD from a few years back, when Dolly invited Altan to play with her at her homecoming concert. I though they made a fantastic combination. |
Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: Jimmy C Date: 21 Feb 01 - 09:09 PM Hotspur, I have a CD of Dolly with Altan also, it may be the same one. Mine is called Heartsongs and Altan sang Barbara Allen in Gaelic and Dolly joined in in English. It was a live recording, they complimented each other beautifully. Is this the same one you mention ?. |
Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: rangeroger Date: 22 Feb 01 - 03:05 AM Sam we had a discussion about "Little Sparrow" on the" Dolly Parton on Austin City Limits" thread a few weeks ago. It is an awesome CD. I didn't know Altan was on it until Mike Regenstreif set me straight. I've got a promotional copy that doesn't list the performers. rr |
Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: GUEST,Upstreeter Date: 22 Feb 01 - 07:26 AM Dolly is a real heroine of mine. She featured on 'The Parkinson Show' here in England last week and impressed...tons of self deprecating remarks and a deal of wisdom and good sense. When questioned about the musch rumoured 'relationship' between her and her personal assistant (a female childhood friend), she turned straight to camera and in the best Bill Clinton manner said witha smile "I did NOT have sex with that woman!" On this occasion Parky had to deal with Dolly, Denise Lewis and Tracy Ullman...it made for some inspired TV for a change. Three incredibly strong women with more in common than you'd first imagine. Her trad. music credentials are pretty sound I reckon, so why doesn't some daring festival organiser book her over here? Oh, and a Folk Roots interview is long overdue Ian A. |
Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: GUEST,D_hand Date: 22 Feb 01 - 07:48 AM Aggree with you about Dolly on Parkinson - loved her - & that song''I will always love you'' - anyone who writes songs like that will always have my vote. an other favourite of mine is 'Here it comes again'. |
Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: Pinetop Slim Date: 22 Feb 01 - 11:29 AM One of the many things I like about "Sparrow" is the way it revitalizes "Sweet By and By." I had written it off as cliched -- anybody know if the Irish lyrics are available somewhere? |
Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: MARINER Date: 22 Feb 01 - 02:31 PM Dolly Parton!! Thank God, when I saw the thread I thought it might have been Dolly the cloned sheep or worse still Michael Hely Rae , the son of "colourful" Irish politician Jackie, who is so like the father that he's known as Dolly. |

Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: GUEST,D_hand Date: 26 Feb 01 - 05:35 AM Did anyone see Doly on 'Oh So Graham Norton' - hillarious - She was really enjoying herself - Great line when she said that she loved dressing that way - hell if I was a man I'd have been a Drag Queen - and a darn good one at that Norton replied |

Subject: RE: Altan play with Dolly !! From: gnu Date: 29 Jun 12 - 06:48 PM Oh dear, terrier... the sound mixing on that is terrible. I adore Dolly but I hate that engineer. And, I find it odd Dolly would allow that to be the cut. Just doesn't seem like something a lady of her nature would allow. |
