Subject: Update on Winters Wages
From: Peter Kasin

Greetings, Mudcatters. Winters Wages (Lloyd) asked me to update you on his lymphoma and treatments. Things are looking a little better lately, and he is feeling more hopeful. The good news is that the node under his arm is receding. He is getting chemo and radiation treatments. His hair hasn't fallen out yet, but his doctor expects that it will after another round of treatments.

His daughter is a vet tech, and her boss is his unofficial medical advisor. He calls Lloyd every other day to advise him on what to do, and on what to tell his doctor to do. It's a good thing he is. He told Lloyd "Why aren't they doing a bone marrow stick?" Lloyd passed that on to his doctor, and his doctor said "Oh, yeah, we need to do that." He was having severe stomach pain. The vet explained that "Chemo works where the cells divide the most. In your case, the lining of the stomach. Take Pepcid AC or Tagamet." Lloyd did, and after 40 minutes the pain was gone. Where was his doctor on that one? Lloyd urges everyone who's in an HMO or some other large medical establishment to get involved and "get in your doctor's face" with questions. It's easy for you to become a "manila envelope with stats." So, that's Lloyd's message to you. He's not anywhere out of the woods yet, but it's looking more hopeful. Your continued prayers and thoughts are greatly valued by him.

Encouraging news. Perhaps I need to get our Vet in on Kate's problems.....nobody else seems to be making headway.

Actually, vets have more schooling than MD's......and meds for animals are tested more thoroughly than meds for humans.

I had this itchy rash on my tummy, MD said "???? Who knows?" Vet said, "Mites, get some topical mite spray with pyrethins". It worked.

Get well, Lloyd!! Here's to you!

Great news! I hope he continues to do well and doesn't suffer much from the chemo.

SINS, vets have to know about several species. People doctors only know about one. Vets have to deal with patients that can't talk. People doctors have patients that can tell them where it hurts. Last I heard, it was harder to get into veterinary colleges than medical ones. Of course, I wouldn't want a vet to take my temperature...

Lloyd wrote me that he went out and played a gig last night, and that it went pretty well. Keeping his emotional state in positive mode is not easy for him, but I keep reminding him that it's essential for his physical well being. So, I'm very glad he got out to this gig.

As far as vets vs MD's - I got a dietician job one summer based on my animal nutrition courses. The dietician said anyone who could formulate diets for 6 species should be able to handle one!

LLoyd, when I was going through radiation and chemotherapy,it wasn't pleasant. I found my energy would really take a nosedive during each course of treatment.
I tried to work with the process mentally, to help by visualizing this medicine coursing through my body and aggressively attacking each cancer cell it encountered. I think it did help; I've been cancer free since 1977. I'll be thinking of you, and including you in my meditations.
Keep fighting the good fight.

I spoke to Lloyd a couple of weeks ago. He was experiencing quite a bit of discomfort but seemed in fairly good spirits despite it. He seems to prefer a low profile so that's all I'll say at this point. I am hoping to hear from him any day now.

Hi: Thanks for the concern folks...Yes, I keep a low profile as I am frightened to death. The node have gone pretty much on the outside of the body. BUT the doctor said most people get rid of this stuff after three treatments. I still have lymphoma in my spleen, stomach area and down by the spine. The catscan revealed reduced lymphoma in the spine and stomach. He saw no change in the spleen. I tell myself thats cause thats the basket or central headquaters for lymph system and it will probably be the last to go..BUT the doctor said he pulled my slide to re-examine to confirm (I though they did that..they told me so) that its a "large mass B" cell. Well, he said they could not tell as lymphoma is hard to pick the types...Soooo they sent it off to Stanford for review. My blood counts have been low...a few "knockdown"days. My finger tips numb from the "vincristine" so I make typos. Cannot play guitar (not that I could anyway)..No hair..and pretty lonely...All this started well...it a personal matter but lets just say, as the old song goes, "dont play b17 it was our song" Sure you guys get the picture. Anyway..Dont worry about me..I will survive...Work has been kind to me I am sked gfor chemo on Tuesday..blood count permitting UGH! Dont mind the juice but that damn Prednisone for five days wires me up. Miss all you guys and Radriano sorry I did not answer your call..Tell everyone Im Hanging! and good luck with the concert. Tell John I sang his song but dont want to go there just yet***BG Warm Regards Lloyd Jones "Winters Wages"

Forwarding that to the Prayer Chain, Lloyd. We've been praying for you right along, and will continue to do so.

A good friend of mine has come down with what you have. I especially pray for you when I am driving her for chemo or otherwise spending time with her. Are you on a one-week-per-month cycle of it like she is?

It's from that viewpoint that I want to thank you personally for subjecting yourself to all this awful treatment. Those of us who get to enjoy your time with us appreciate it more than you probably know.

love,

~Susan

Oh, Lloyd, you've been on my mnd so much, lately. You are being so good to come visit with us when it sounds as though you'd much rather have a lie-down. Thanks for the updates and do know that we all appreciate you and are proud to call you our friend. We are also here to help in anyway that we can. Do you need more CD's, tapes, etc. to listen to? Can we send anything? Do you have a Walkman you can listen to while undergoing treatment? How about just a few cards and letters of support? Something you can actually hold in your hand, like what we did for Barry Finn when he got his new liver? We wouldn't have to have your private addy if someone else would be willing to give us a POB or something.

Please just let us know. In the meantime, I will be sending you lots of love and good thoughts and energy. You are doing good! Keep focussed on the positive and let the mis-shapen cells flow away out of your body.

Thanks, Lloyd.

My friend is extremely inarticulate when it comes to undertsnsding and relaying what her doctor tells her... so I have a really poor idea of what she is facing. It makes it hard to pray too specifically, so I just ask that our Lord enwrap her in hugs and peace. It seems her main struggle now is just tremendous exhaustion. She has been throguh three rounds and starts the fourth this week-- I will miss this one because we will be away. It is very unclear to me how much of her tiredness is the disease and how much is the treatment-- we are not seeing her out and about much now even between treatments. She is pretty old, and has beat a lot of other challenges all her life. She says now that if this is her time, that's not the worst thing in the world, and she is not worried about what comes next. (I worry I am not supporting her enough, but she is great at asking for help and, at this time, is not asking anything.)

Her name is Edith. Lloyd, when you feel like you are having your own hardest times, please think of and pray for her, then, would you?

Hardi and I will continue to pray for you while we are gone. Just now I am listening to a wide velvet ribbon of deep, strong sound slowly being unwound by the wonderful fiddler Bonnie Rideout; and with every ream of ripples she pushes off the end of her bow, I am sending the peace and beauty of it to you and Edith.

Well, I hope Edith makes recovery soon. It depends on which stage she was in when diagnosed. Age has a lot to do with the exhaustion as well. they sometimes give you a break to see what gives and let your body recover. It is important for that to happpen and not be in sirvival all the time (as with all of us too in everyday life) Thats why we have music...Soooo Lets party one day. I will keep her in my prayers as well along with you and the nice people here. I just had my fourth on Thursday and am wired now on Prednisone...Com Tuesday I crash..I also have to have a daily shot of Nueprogen (how ever you spell it) to bring my white count up. Gonna sign now and try and squeeze out a tune on my squeeze box. Warm Regards to you and yours WYSIWIG Winters Wages
