Subject: NTIF - anyone going?
From: GUEST,emily b
Date: 27 Feb 01 - 09:48 AM

Hey, is anyone going to NTIF (North Texas Irish Festival) this year?

I know that Jed's band is playing so Jed, I look forward to meeting you. How about anyone else? Should we try to find a spot and a time to meet and introduce ourselves?

Any suggestions? I'm looking forward to this great festival.

I'll be working the Conradh na Gaeilge (Gaelic League) table from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, so come by and see me! I'll be sure to have my Mudcat badge on, so you won't be able to miss me (as I'll be the only person at the table -- ha ha).

Don't miss my friend, Jim Flanagan, who'll be playing there this weekend. Here's the where's and when's for himself:

SCMA In The Tradition Stage, Saturday, 1:30 to 2:15 pm

Guinness Star & Harp Pub Tent, Saturday, 6:30 to 7:15 pm

Guinness Star & Harp Pub Tent, Sunday, 3:45 to 4:30 pm

-- Áine

And here are the links for the Saturday Schedule and the Sunday Schedule.

I'm planning on going Saturday, at least. I'll try to hear Jed, and I'm also looking forward to hearing Patrick Ball, wire harper. I'll be wearing a kilt, because I usually do, and you can click here for pictures of me without my goatee. I may go Sunday after the Opera ends as well.

I'll look for Aine, and probably spend some time at the Harps of Avalon Booth.

Guinesschick and I will be working NTIF and our meeting abilities will be structured by those times. It would be easier for us to arrange a Mudcat hello to y'all following our shows ... Our schedule is:

Eammons Kitchen: Sat 5PM to 545PM on the Bennigan's Shannon stage

Sun open air acoustic set 2PM (walk about)

Sun 730PM to 815PM on Guinness Star & Harp stage

I will be doing a solo/duo with Michael Harrison also:

Sat 11AM to 1145AM on Guinness Star & Harp stage

Sat 1015PM to 11PM on Tara Stage

Please come by and say hello!

I'll be wandering around the fair grounds most of saturday, and maybe the early part of sunday afternoon. Without a pic handy to post, I'd say 6ft tall, dark hair and beard, sunglasses, but that might not narrow the field much. I'll keep an eye open for y'all.

... making some notes on who and where ...

The stages at NTIF are managed quite well, but that means performers are expected to clear off quickly following the close of their shows. We would love to meet Mudcatters, and could easily be a source of meeting occasion, if y'all would stop by the stage to say hello - after we've cleared off. We'll be easy to spot - Guinnesschick (Karen) and I have some pics here, though I'm a bit longer haired at the moment - and Karen is no longer purple haired. I hope we'll meet ALL the Mudcatters who can make it to NTIF. I wish we had Seamus headlining again this year, but NTIF doesn't like eto repeat their stars from year to year ... next Seamus, eh?

Sounds like there will be a small gang of us anyway.

Jed, I'll try to get by after your set with Michael Harrison if not before after your Eammon'l Kitchen set.

Aine, I'll try to come by your Gaelic League both. I must meet the woman behind the song challenges. I'll have to sort out the whens and wheres of everyone else. Unless we can get a gang around Jed's sets.

This is gonna be great!

Seamus, we'll be thinking of ya.

It looks like less then ideal weather, ya'll. Please come out anyway - much of the festival is under cover, should the rain continue. Who knows, maybe the sun will shine on us, afterall. The Guinness will still be grand and the music fine, no matter WHAT the sun does!

I would think that the rain would be more appropriate anyway. One of the best sets I ever heard was Solas under a tent while it drizzled outside. I'll be there. Rain or shine.

I will be playing there with Michael Harrison and the Blarney Brothers, so please, please come on out, if'n yer of a mind to! I'm sure it'll be a great show and a fun time. We start at 8 sharp and carry on 'til the wee hours.

Jed - I think you jinxed it -- the rain returned on Saturday, but it was a nice soft day really.

The best part of Saturday for me was meeting emily b and Scotsbard - and giving them both great big hugs! And Jed, I'm sorry I missed seeing you (had to leave early to pick up the kids down in Waxahachie), but I gave your hug to Scotsbard . . . did he deliver it for me? *BG*

Wesley - I missed seeing you, but as soon as I'm settled in the new house, there's open invitation to all you Mudcatters to come over and play!

Here's hoping I see you all at the next NTIF, if not sooner!

All the best, Áine

Áine - sorry I missed you, but yes I did get a brief moment to speak with emily b and an even shorter hello to Scotsbard (it seems the band beofre ours went long, and then took so long to get off stage we lost 10 minutes of our set before we even got on stage) - so I'm afraid it was very difficult time to speak to anyone.

Still, rain or no; it was a good day - and today promises to be even better!

What a great festival. Tons of great music. And to finally meet Jed, Guinesschick and Aine was a very special treat. Scotsbard and I play together in a band so seeing him was no big deal ;-). Wesley and Mimosa, I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you.

Some of us will be down in Corpus Christi on March 31st for the South Texas Celtic Festival. Maybe we'll have more time to visit then. I'm looking forward to that.

Eammon's Kitchen did some wonderful stuff, my favorite being the kind of rocked up version of She Moved Through the Fair. Guinesschick belting it out, so unlike my a cappella version. I also really liked the song maybe called Roddy McCoy, or something like that. Keep up the good work.

Musically, I thought the highlight was the young band called Danu. 7 guys who play trad music with no gimmicks. Just good honest playing and singing. They are here in the states doing an extensive tour. Look for them in the Northeast soon.

Hope to see you all in the near future.

Emily

Emily B - You're right about Danu - I thought they were the highlight of the day. The weather was lousy and the acoustics were a little better than last year. If you have a blue clicky thing for the festival in Corpus Christi let us know. I hope we have a chance to run into you again. Where are you at and what do you play ? Tell us more about your band. And if you have a chance you ought to get a membership here so it's easier to contact you. Take care - Wesley

... checking in after the festival ...

Aine' is even nicer in person than online, if that seems possible. Jed Marum's group is quite a fun listen, and the little I heard of Jim Flanagan was entertaining. Danu was excellent, Clandestine is local and seemed in good form, many of the other groups sounded very nice.

The music was great, the mud was ... well ... muddy.

We headed out a little earlier than planned because of the inclement weather (cold feet, actually) and other than succumbing to WAS (whistle aquisition syndrome) had a wonderful weekend.

Our group "Furagh Larq" will be playing at the South Texas Festival, and also at the Mucky Duck on St.Pats. Give me a shout if you need directions.

Jed,

I was about to say thanks for your earlier remark about the "well managed stages" until I saw your after fest comment about getting one set cut short. Please let me know which set that was.

I'm one of the ones responsible for the stage managers, and our policy is supposed to be "on time on stage = on time off stage. Late on stage = on time off stage, and tough luck about the short set." ( at least if it's late on stage by your own fault. If it's another band running over or circumstanes beyond control we try to compromise.)

What did everyone think of the festival? Any great likes/dislikes or things you want next time? I'll be happy to bring up ideas to the powers... It's everyones festival!

It was great to see and meet all out there. I personally loved the weather, but I'm weird that way. Thanks, Emily, for the kind words. I really felt like we botched that set, but we're always hardest on ourselves....

Jeff, an idea for the larger Celtic Rock bands would be to have them all with a 30 minute turnaround. I think Tempest needed that much time. Great band, by the way. (Or, you could just make sure Travis does our sound ALL THE TIME! *G*)

Great festival, and fun was had by all.....I think...at least by me. ;-)g'chick (once more of the purple hair)

Red Celt - I have to say that the stages were managed very very well, on the whole. In fact, I had intended to write to the NTIF folks telling them that we really appreciated that aspect of the show in particular.

Unfortunately for us, we got caught by one of the few execptions. Tempest, who was on before us, went a bit long and they took a long time to get off the stage (they are a big band, with lots of electronics and equip - so I don't think they could have gotten off any quicker). We did not get on stage to plug-in and get sound checked until we were already 5 minutes into our time, then it took a few minutes to get it all set - so we lost 10 or 15 minutes of our set, since we did end precisely on time.

The truth is, if that's the worst we have to deal with; we're lucky. Sh*t Happens, when you're at festivals like this, and you just have to adapt.

... and by the way, Tempest was a great band, with a huge, exciting sound, and some top shelf musicians. If they hadn't gone long, I might not have been able to catch some of their act!

Red Celt -

The only real gripe I had as a listener was the echoing caused by hard indoor walls. It muddied up (there's that mud thing again *L*) intricate details of the sound quite a bit. It's a tough setting to deal with acoustically, because of the room materials and geometry, but I thought the sound guys did a good job on balance overall. Maybe y'all could drape curtains along the walls similar to the ones separating the big stages from the vendor area to help them out a little bit. Outdoor sound was well run at all the shows I caught.

Oops - hit the darned enter button too soon.

Aine thanks for the blue clicky thing to the South Texas Celtic Festival in Corpus. I'm blue clicky challenged.

Wesley, I do apologize for not being a member. I'm doing this at work and just don't think I should join from this computer. Call me paranoid. They are probably tracking me any...

One of these days, I'll get set up at home again. Feel free to email me at emily_blunck@oxy.com.

About the bands. I'm in 2 bands. One with Scotsbard called Furagh Larq. Mostly I sing but I also bang on the bodhran. Scotsbard plays guitar and sings. We have a flutist who sings and another guy who mostly sings and plays a bit of harmonica. We do some 4 part a cappella but usually work with the instruments as well.

The other band is called Constant Billy. Guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bazouki, working in keyboards and flute. And I just bought, gulp, a bass guitar, electric that is. We're going for a more rocked up sound with this group. A bit edgier than Furagh Larq.

Both bands are such fun and keep me busy.

Oh yes, I'm in Houston. Let's hope we can all see each other soon.

Emily

I'm so eager with that return button, you'd think I don't really have anything to say...

Wesley, we'd love to get a gig in Fort Worth or Dallas. We've done a few road trips to Austin and now we're going to Corpus.

Do you have anywhere to recommend or do you have a contact. We are in the process of making a decent demo recording. It's just taking longer than anticipated. Once that's done we'll do some mailing around to festivals and venues.

Any advice is welcome.

Dear emily b,

The best place I know to check out venues in the DFW area (and all over Texas) is the SCMA Venues page. Go to the SCMA Main Page and click on 'Venues' under the 'Services' category in the navigation bar. It'll give you a list of pubs, clubs, etc. (with addresses and phone numbers) in many cities in Texas.

Hope to see y'all up here soon for a gig! And if you need a place to stay, you know who to call *BG*

emily - as Áine says above, the SCMA venue pages are an excellent resource for booking, especially in Texas ... but several other regions, as well. I would look through there, and start making calls.

I have no idea what your experience level is, so maybe the rest of these comments are unnecessary, but if you're already an experienced working band, most of the clubs listed at the SCMA will be interested in hearing from you. If you're just getting started, I suggest making as many of the sessions as possible, and working close to home until you've built some momentum. Likewise, many many clubs offer open mic nights, even the non-Celtic clubs will be glad to have you for a short set at their open mics, so take advantage of those too.
