Subject: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Joan from Wigan Date: 27 Feb 01 - 02:27 PM Whether or not the Yorkshire Spring Gathering happens (and I really hope it does, 'cause I've been looking forward to it for ages!) there are two forthcoming events in the Red Rose County which will welcome Mudcatters. The first is on Easter Monday (April 16) at the Seven Stars, Wallgate, Wigan (one of the venues for Wigan Folk Club and close to Wigan Pier). This will be Wigan's 3rd Annual Day of Folk. There will be a Big Sing from 2pm till we get thrown out (and we never get thrown out until well after midnight). Food will be available in the pub (good quality snacks, reasonable prices) and there will be a Bouncy Castle and face painting etc. to keep youngsters occupied. The second is Coppull Folk Festival over the weekend of Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd June, at the Alison Arms, Preston Road, Coppull (between Chorley and Wigan). There are no guests booked this year, just a weekend of singarounds and sessions with Free Camping for tents and caravans. (A traditional feature of this festival is the Saturday overnight singaround in the ladies loo on the camping field, open to both genders - the singaround that is!) The organiser of this event is Kevin Foy, who does not currently have internet access but can be contacted on 01257 792246. Or PM me and I will pass enquiries on if I can't answer them. It would be lovely to meet up again with any or all of the 'Catters who made the Swinton do so enjoyable, and any other future friends who can make either or both events. Joan |

Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Helen Date: 27 Feb 01 - 06:08 PM This is a long shot, but my first serious boyfriend - love at first sight and all that - came from Wigan. This was back in 1974. He came to live in Sydney, Oz and that is where I met him. He was a bit of a folkie. I lost contact with him and would love to find out where he is, just for a chat. His name is Neil Shaw. He had long blonde hair and a beard then. (Now he probably is clean shaven, wears a business suit and a bowler hat, and uses a mobile phone and a laptop. LOL) Anyway, just in case you know him or know of him.... Helen |

Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 01 Mar 01 - 07:07 PM Thanks Treaties1, where do I get my shirt, do you have any set repertoire? I could learn the songs then I will be ready. I do know a few shanties but not generally all the way through. JohnB |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Joan from Wigan Date: 02 Mar 01 - 02:15 AM For JohnB and anyone else who is interested in possibly joining the Shellback Chorus, I reproduce here the "ad" for new members: WOULD YOU LIKE TO PERFORM IN MAJOR FESTIVALS WITH THE SHELLBACK CHORUS singing maritime songs, both shanties and more reflective items? We have performed on the Fylde, Saddleworth and Mersey Shanty Festivals and have similar future engagements. EITHER GENDER WELCOME A short rehearsal is involved (up to 1 hour) at the start of each festival. OPTION A: Just sing choruses. OPTIONB: If you are a competent singer (words perfect by heart) there are also opportunites to lead a song by mutual agreement. INTERESTED? Contact DEREK SEED (01323) 726247 17.00 - 19.00 hours. When I last spoke to Derek on the subject of numbers, I was told there were thirty-odd members of the Chorus, although obviously not everyone is available for every engagement. But it's a powerful experience, and definitely to be recommended. Joan |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 02 Mar 01 - 12:32 PM Thanks for the info Joan From Wigan, does Derek Seed have an Email address? JohnB |

Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Noreen Date: 21 Apr 01 - 01:44 PM Well- did anyone spot the Gnome and the Dog and collect their prize?? |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Joan from Wigan Date: 27 May 01 - 01:48 AM I spotted many people, but not the Gnome and the Dog - they really must have had a good disguise! And now the Coppull weekend is almost upon us - one week to go and we're only warming up! I've had definite confirmation that Micca's tankard will be coming along, and is really looking forward to being filled with Lancashire ale... The Alison Arms has an upstairs and a downstairs, so it should be possible to keep the singers' and musicians' sessions separate (but there's nothing to stop people wandering from one to the other). There is no admission charge and free camping for tents and caravans. Be there or be quadrangular! Joan |

Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Noreen Date: 29 May 01 - 04:00 PM So, Joan- instructions are: just drive to Coppull and keep your eyes open? Or do I need anything more? And is there a programme of events or does it just happen? (Starting Friday sometime?) Looking forward to seeing you there. Any other mudcatters going to Coppull this weekend? |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: John Routledge Date: 29 May 01 - 04:25 PM Hope you enjoyed Tanglefoot Joan!! Will be arriving Coppull on Friday clutching tent to get pole position. Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Linda Kelly Date: 29 May 01 - 04:31 PM wish I was going. PS have done the tape of my song Joan Noreen and Caitrin and will be despatched tomorrow if all goes well. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Noreen Date: 29 May 01 - 05:09 PM Thanks, Ickle... but why not bring the tapes over at the weekend? You know you want to... and we could sing each others' songbooks again...! |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Catrin Date: 30 May 01 - 08:38 AM Ickle Dorrit - thank you so much for the words (I'll send an email when I get home) but sweetie, its CATRIN (not CAITRIN) - if you call me caitrin, people will ask me for cookie recipes and I have no knowledge of such things :) Catrin, (Wishing she could come this weekend too - but at the moment it aint looking too good:( ) |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Joan from Wigan Date: 30 May 01 - 01:58 PM Noreen (and anyone else needing directions), the Alison Arms is on Preston Road, which is the main road between Wigan and Chorley. Coming from Wigan direction, it's past Standish, and is the next pub on your right after the Coppull Moor (also on your right). The car park is right next to the pub, and there's a big sign draped over the pub about the folk weekend. The "office" is almost next door to the pub, and you'll be given info about where to camp etc (the camping field is just across the main road from the pub, and is usually open from about dinnertime Friday, if not before). As far as I know, it's a free and easy weekend of singers and musicians sessions. No artistes have been booked, it will happen as people want it to (with a little help from the organisers). See above for Mudcatters who are coming - although there will be other folkies around as well, people from the Coppull and Wigan clubs will be there, and I'm told there are people coming from as far away as Scarborough and who knows where else. And yes, Geordie, I certainly did enjoy Tanglefoot at Chester on Sunday - three times in one day - heaven! |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: John Routledge Date: 30 May 01 - 02:08 PM Thanks for info Joan. From my memory there are loads of clubs in the area so a varied selection should be assured. If people insist on coming from Scarborough there is not much that can be done to stop them I suppose *BG* See you there on Friday. Cheers GB |

Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: nutty Date: 30 May 01 - 05:24 PM I have to miss it as well Ickle, not for the same reason as you - my finances are reasonable for once - this is a group practice weekend and a four - as we are a four-part harmony group I think I would be missed Joan and Noreen - Have a good do - I'll try and make the next one wherever and whenever |

Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Noreen Date: 01 Jun 01 - 07:44 PM Session was going strong when I had to leave this evening. Arrived late after car trouble and AA assistance... and had to call them out again after breaking down on the way home. Had to be towed home. Bother! So if I don't make it back to Coppull tomorrow as intended, you'll understand the reason. Some lovely singing going on, and friendly faces. Daughter Catherine enjoyed her first singaround very much. Thanks for telling us, Joan. Noreen |
Subject: RE: BS: UK 'Cats -- Lancashire From: Joan from Wigan Date: 02 Jun 01 - 03:44 AM It was lovely to see you, Noreen and Catherine, so sorry you had car trouble. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can make it back - we're only warming up yet! Geordie Broon and Jezebel are still here, and we're hoping to see JohnJ and possibly Dave the Gnome and one or two more of the Swinton crowd today or tomorrow. I came home last night (I've a visitor from New Zealand stopping over, so couldn't desert home completely) but I'll be headed back later today. Joan |
