In Scotland we have a radio programme called Travelling Folk. I have just e-mailed the presenter, Archie Fisher, and put forward the suggestion that it would be an idea to cut down on the amount of studio recorded music and introduce some more 'live' recordings from clubs and concerts.
I even suggested that he introduce a Radio Floor Spot.
The floor spots in most clubs range from the woeful to the brilliant. But there is a lot of wonderful local talent out there in the form of people who don't want to make it big or make CD's
They just enjoy entertaining their friends and themselves.
To me, that is what folk music is all about - people enjoying and taking part in music along with all the banter and humour - not a sterile studio produced CD.

Would you agree - or not?
D.A.M.

Absolutely, Dunc. It's not folk without folks!

If there is a good response to this thread, (for or against the idea) I will invite Archie Fisher to check out the reactions.

Well, I think that it would go down really well. I'm only sorry that I won't be able to hear it. Let us know how you get on.

Good idea Dunc. Think I'll echo it to our local folk prog if you don't mind.
Arcie will have to put up with me later in the year when he comes to the club.

Me and my older half were just talking about this, how recordings ahve taken away from the pub and club singers of yesteryear, where the talent is immense. I for one would like to see (hear) that sort of radio show country wide! music of the people for the people by the people - FOLK music! Archie, if you do read this...... It would be a great idea! Hope you get somewhere with this idea! Lucy

This idea is not new, BBC Radio Durham did a weekly folk programme from the folk clubs in the late sixties. The club I was involved with "The Kings Head at Shotley Bridge" hosted the show about every six months or so. It was a great chance for the resident singers to get their parents, aunts & uncles etc. to listen to Folk music.

may not be new, but great idea all the same. Live is unpredictable and therefore more exciting. I hope the thread has hundreds of responses so someone can get this show on the road.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a "floor spot"?

tigger dooley -
You CAN listen to Archie's shows - Radio Scotland has been available online since Hogmanay. Travelling Folk is on twice a week. I don't have the URL to hand, but I can post it later, if you wish.
