The very first line of this song is: "I COULD NOT SLEEP AT ALL LAST NIGHT!" But I don't believe that this line is the song title because I have been searching under all these words combinations, with no success.

I believe the song is between 10 to 20 years old.

Hope you can help. Many thanks.

Ummm... "Tossing and Turning"? I don't remember who by, but it's on the Animal House soundtrack.

I'm probably wrong, since the song I'm thinking of is early rock, and you're asking on a folk forum, but it's all I can think of.

I played this song many times with R&B bands in the mid-to-late '60's but for the life of me I can't think of the artist. I was thinking Bobby Bland, but I don't think it was him.......Jim

"Tossin' and Turnin'" starts out with "I couldn't sleep at all last night." The chart hit by Bobby Lewis was about 40 years ago. I don't know if search engines are fluent enough in English to automatically substitute "couldn't" for "could not."

Here are the lyrics.

Hmmm. I was sure this one was "(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep At All" that was written in 1972 by Tony Macauley and popularized by the Fifth Dimension. Made me wonder if I should track down my old girlfriend and ask for my 5th Dim CD back....

But now that I think of it, "Tossin & Turnin'" sounds like a good possibility. I e-mailed both songs to the requestor.

Tossin' and Turnin'
Artist: Bobby Lewis
Words and Music by Ritchie Adams and Malou Rene

1.
I couldn't sleep at all last night
Got to thinkin' of you
Baby things weren't right
Well I was tossin' and turnin'
Turnin' and tossin'
a-tossin' and turnin' all night

2.
I kicked the blankets on the floor
Turned my pillow upside down
I never never did before
'cause I was tossin' and turnin'
Turnin' and tossin'
a-tossin' and turnin' all night

CHORUS

3.
Jumped out of bed
Turned on the light
I pulled down the shade
Went to the kitchen for a bite
Turned off the light
I jumped back into bed
It was the middle of the night

4.
The clock downstairs was strikin' four
Couldn't get you off my mind
I heard the milkman at the door
'cause I was tossin' and turnin'
Turnin' and tossin'
a-tossin' and turnin' all night

Repeat verses 3 and 4

FADE
Turnin' and tossin'

The name of the song is Tossin and Turnin and was sung by Bobby Lewis in 1961. It was one of my favorites.

Bobby Lewis is one of those talented performers whose recognition is confined to a single monster hit, "Tossin' and Turnin'." Released in early 1961, the single rode the charts to 23 weeks, eventually hitting the number one spot on both the pop and R&B charts. Lewis had other hits, including a Top Ten follow-up with "One Track Mind," and had been working for years before that, yet the one song came to be his signature.

This one would do well at the Getaway

I thought it was Bobby Lewis's 1960s US hit Tossin' and Turnin' too, as soon as I saw the thread title. OP - is it?

(Don't confuse it with Tossing and Turning by the UK band The Ivy League - different song.)
