Back in June of '98 you had shared your excitement about finding a book "Moore's Irish Melodies" at a Salvation Army Store. You peaked my interest and I found the book thru' inter-library loan. What a marvelous book! There are only 3 universities that have the book. What a rare find you do indeed have!! I then was able to purchase the book thru' 'a book-finder' here in my area. I have learned 'the Meeting of the Waters'. Just wanted to share Sherry

For those not fortunate enough to stumble on a copy of this book, you can get a collection of selections from it from Elderly Instruments. You can CLICK HERE to go to their website. In the search box at the top of the page you can cut and paste the following phrase:

into the box. It will take you to the book. It is quite comprehensive.

Funny that this thread should be here as I was going to start one about Allan.

I know he is busy with things on the homefront and his Mom, and he hasn't been around much lately. I know he posted yesterday and I hope all is well........Allan, I miss you here and am thinking the best possible thoughts. Sherry, thanks for sharing your excitement. It is, indeed, quite a find. Unfortunately, I have never been able to make much sense out of those parallel lines with all those dot thingies on them and so the book was not as useful to me as it might have been. But almost within moments of my announcement about having the book, I got a note from Alice about "Silent Oh Moyle". I scanned the song and emailed it to her.

Because the volume was obviously more useful in the hands of someone who could read music, I left the book with Alice when I visited her during the Adventure. I hope to someday retrieve it when I return to Montana for another visit. I hope that I will be able to have a much more leisurely stay. Montana is a beautiful state!

For Spaw and others who might have been wondering: I recently purchased a new computer. It is a dandy! Spaw, along with a few others who have been doing my HTML for me will be pleased to know that the keyboard is fully functional. However, the motherboard died on the second day after the computer arrived. The guaranty was made good and a new motherboard was installed a few days ago. However, there was a glitch in the new one that impaired the use of the mouse. So, yet another motherboard was ordered. The new one will be installed within a few days. Once the magic box is fully functional, I hope to be a more regular visitor at the Mudcat.

Please know that although I haven't been posting, I have been dropping by whenever possible. Truth is that I haven't had a lot to say in most of the threads I have seen recently. Nonetheless, you all have been in my thoughts.

For those of you who have been wondering, Mom is doing fairly well. She has lost a lot of ground in the past three months with regard to memory issues and certain cognative functions. But generally she is okay and is eagerly awaiting warmer weather so that she can get outside to work in her beautiful flower gardens.

Allan - check out Noteworthy Composer. Just a few minutes with typing in those funny looking dots and lines and you can press a button and HEAR the tune. Honest. (It's the only way *I* can figure out what they are suppossed to mean.)

Sorry to cause you any worry, SINSULL. The sad thing is that I really don't like milk chocolate. I could eat all the semi-sweet you could give me, though. Nonetheless, I am 25 pounds lighter than I was on Dec. 28th. I look a lot more like I do now than I did then.

Allan - That is great news. 25lbs in two months!!! You didn't pull a "Cinderella's Ugly Sister" and cut something off, did you??? I too like only semi-sweet choclate and avoid it like the plague. So did you do it on Slimfast? Inquiring minds want to know.

First, my apologies to Sherry for having this transform into a thread about me.

Okay, here's what I have done:
I stopped all alcohol intake sometime in late October. (Attendees at the Getaway can attest to the fact that I was getting a little too good at drinking it.) I stopped drinking coffee (gasp!!) at the end of December when I was first starting the diet. I didn't want the appetite stimulation of it to get in the way.

In January, I ate one of the Slim-Fast snack bars for breakfast, one of their shakes for lunch, and what, for me, was a somewhat reduced-portion supper. I did not allow myself to slip from this pattern for the entire month. In mid February I resumed drinking coffee. I also took a day off and ate everything I craved all day long. Then I made a slight change in my diet regimen. I moved my main meal to lunchtime and the shake to the evening. It made sense to me that I should schedule the high-calorie intake at a time when there are still some hours remaining to burn some of it off.

My only real cheating has consisted of eating a whole package of saltines once in a while or sometimes eating an entire package of Redenbacher's "Smart-Pop" popcorn.

Yesterday, for the first time since I started the diet, I began doing some morning exercises.

During the entire time, I have been drinking as much as a gallon or so of water every day. Although I have worn out the carpet between here and the bathroom, I think this is more than likely one of the key things I have done. Besides, Slim-Fast has a way of sucking all of the moisture out of you and if you don't drink a lot of water, you'll pay in the end (pun intended)!

Now, I'm telling you all of this because you asked. But if you want to hear of some truly admirable and effective efforts toward weight-loss, talk to MMario! I am one of his biggest fans (no pun intended).

Thanks, Sorcha. Mom says she really likes the blue things that appear on the screen from time to time. The Gateway wallpaper is her favorite shade of blue, for instance. But other than that, she really doesn't pay much attention.

Allan, No problem. No need to apologize. You are obviously someone well-appreciated by the group. Unbeknownst to me I was able in some small way to contribute to your fellow mud-catters getting back in touch with you. Try a tin-whistle tutor to teach yourself. I did it; you can do it! Then you will be able to plunk out some of the simpler tunes from Moore's book. That is why I chose 'Meeting of the Waters'. Since I have been to Avoca where the two waters of the Avonbeg and Avonmore join my memories now become sweeter with the playing of the tune. Regards, Sherry

GEORGE WARD, spouse of Vaughan, recorded a song called "The Meeting Of The Waters"---about the ERIE CANAL joining the Great Lakes. The Erie Canal was built mainly by Irish.

Art, The song 'Meeting of the Waters' refers to a place in Ireland in County Wicklow where Thomas Moore the National Poet sat under a tree and wrote a song about two rather small rivers joining into one at the village of Avoca. Sherry

Thanks for the advice, Sherry. I am working toward applying written music in some way or other. Long, long ago I learned how to writemusic - using 17th and 18th century rules. But, in truth, I never really learned how to read what I had written in any meaningful way. By that I refer to the actual application of the notes to an instrument. Because I have been a "by ear" musician all of my life, I didn't really use what I had learned and so I lost it.

At the Savation Army Thrift Store I recently found copies of the very same edition of the theory workbooks I had used way back then. I am using them again to review (re-learn) some of what I had once known. The difference is that this time I have a variety of instruments at hand upon which I will apply my "new" knowledge.

Most likely by the time I see the Moore volume again, I should be able to read it.

We do have it, and the title is listed in our "browse" index, but I think it got lost when my web guru re-designed the opening menu page, where it used to dwell. Sandy, and others who I would very much enjoy seeing again at Old Songs and elsewhere,

My current gig has limited my travel severely. At the moment, I have a grand total of thirty hours off per month; but I'm working on getting a bit more. The one thing I have already stipulated is that I will be absent from here during the weekend of the FSGW Getaway!

The nature of my position here is that its circumstance is easily subject to change. In fact, things that could effect my tenure seem to change a little every day. For that reason I'm not totally crossing off any possibilities for future travel.
