Subject: UK folk festivals, non-smoke singarounds
From: Julie B
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 09:02 AM

Despite a request for info. in an earlier thread ( Non-Smoking Folk Clubs in the UK ), I've been unable to discover a single folk sing-around session in Northamptonshire or Bedfordshire with a non-smoking policy. Unfortunately it doesn't make sense to travel further afield on weekdays evenings, so I'd now like to find some folk festivals that might incorporate a sing-around in a non-smoking venue as part of their programme. St. Neots Folk Festival (in May) is one; does anybody know of any others in the UK?. I'd be really grateful for any information. Thanks, Julie

I will try to take it on board for Swinton (Manchester, UK) festival in October. Email swinton.folk@usa.net to keep up to date or PM me anytime to see if we can manage it.

Cheers

Dave

The Glenfarg Folk Feast in Perthshire Scotland holds its concerts in a non smoking hall and the singarounds are held in the huge dining room of the Glenfarg Hotel and it is also a non smoking venue. Other events are held in the smoke free dining room, like the song competition (theme this year is 2001 - A Folk Oddity) and the 16th Annual World Puff-A-Box Chmpionships.

People often ask me about a non-smoking policy for our club. The Hyde in Plymouth. Does anyone know about non-smoking policies in the South West...for their information?

Cheers

Well I'm not certain that the singaround in the ASrts Centre Bar at Sidmouth is strictly non-smoking. But I think you'd probably get stomped if you tried to light up there.

Here's a UK festival with a non-smoking policy:

Four Fools Folk Festival
29th. June - 1st. July 2001
St. Michael's C of E High School
Astley Road,
Chorley,
Lancashire UK

Website //freespace.virgin.net/four.fools/index.htm

"Come and experience the unique atmosphere of the "Four Fools" thirteenth major folk festival weekend, now happily relocated at St Michael's C.of E.High School, Astley Road, Chorley (St MICHAEL'S IS A NON SMOKING VENUE). You won't find anywhere friendlier than this well established, one-site, singer's festival.

Sit back and enjoy the concerts full of top national and international performers, take part in a wide variety of music song and dance workshops, meet your favourite artistes in informal surroundings, kick up your heels in our 'new' Saturday evening Ceilidh with top band "The Bismarcks". Sit and sing all day and night in our wonderful singarounds, take part in our music sessions, enioy our informal folk clubs.

The choice is yours. Everything under one roof with the campsite 'at the back door'. Showers are available for campers and there is hard standing for caravans. Camping is free for season ticket holders. A varied selection of hot and cold food will be available throughout the weekend and there is also a Real Ale Bar.

...Further details available from Ken and Angie Bladen on 01257 263678, 36 The Oaks, Eaves Green, Chorley, Lancs. PR7 3QU".

The three Mariners at Rainham Kent England is N/S club. I too am N/S but I won't go there because I refuse to assist in the ghettoisation of smokers.

Crail Folk Club in Fife is a non-smoking club. Crail Festival (Village festival) has events organised by Crail Folk Club, Major Concert being The John Wright Band, July 20th will be a non-smoking event. Whilst we do not agree with the gettoisation of smokers, we feel that the atmosphere is better on the whole for the watching public and the performers.

Too late for this year - but worth remembering is at Chippenham Folk Festival, concerts and song sessions held at the Angel Hotel venue are non smoking. And I apologise if it upsets some people but it is not ghettoising smokers to ask that they excercise some consideration and curtesy by not imposing their choice to smoke on everyone, and asking them to excerise their choice to smoke in another room. If they smoke where others are singing they take away choice from everyone else around them. On a number of occasions, having paid for my ticket I have been forced to leave performances I was enjoying because of the selfishness of someone who clearly believes that they are the only one who's "rights" should be considered.
Sorry for the rant but I'm fed up of being expected to feel sorry for smokers WHO HAVE A CHOICE !!

Lancaster Easter Maritime Festival has its singarounds in a non-smoking room and the performances are in a variety of venues - some smoking, some non-smoking. And mostly free of charge, except the standard daily admission fee to the Maritime Museum (no extra charge for the festival period), and the last night concert (a two 'stage', five hour marathon), which is ticketed.

Hi Julie - only just noticed this fred

the Bull at Barton must come close?

Did you see the Chuckle brothers this morning - they went camping and their tent blew away - then they went to a hotel where they could only get in if they pretended to be policeman - they quickly took on the names of the magazines they reading

So one became 'Ideal Homes' & the other 'What's on' - get it

it was hilarious

Seaford Folk Club in East Sussex has been non-smoking for years.
Broadstairs Folk Festival has a lot of smoke free venues, notably the concert venues.
Whitby Folk Festival has got a lot of smoke free venues as well, mainly concert venues.
I've managed to quit the weed and now love smoke free venues (less temptation) :-))

Thanks for reviving this thread. It is not really too much of an exaggeration to say that singing in a non smoking atmosphere always sounds better. It is certainly easier to do :0)
