Subject: Lyr Add: TWISTED (Joni Mitchell) From: Justa Picker Date: 07 Mar 01 - 12:35 PM TWISTED My analyst told me That I was right out of my head The way he described it He said I'd be better dead than live I didn't listen to his jive I knew all along That he was all wrong And I knew that he thought I was crazy but I'm not Oh no My analyst told me That I was right out of my head He said I'd need treatment But I'm not that easily led He said I was the type That was most inclined When out of his sight To be out of my mind And he thought I was nuts No more ifs or ands or buts They say as a child I appeared a little bit wild With all my crazy ideas But I knew what was happening I knew I was a genius... What's so strange when you know That you're a wizard at three I knew that this was meant to be Now I heard little children Were supposed to sleep tight That's why I got into the vodka one night My parents got frantic Didn't know what to do But I saw some crazy scenes Before I came to Now do you think I was crazy I may have been only three But I was swinging They all laugh at angry young men They all laugh at Edison And also at Einstein So why should I feel sorry If they just couldn't understand The idiomatic logic That went on in my head I had a brain It was insane Oh they used to laugh at me When I refused to ride On all those double-decker buses All because there was no driver on the top My analyst told me That I was right out of my head But I said dear doctor I think that it's you instead Because I have got a thing That's unique and new To prove it I'll have The last laugh on you 'Cause instead of one head I got two And you know two heads are better than one.

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: Chords to 'Twisted' by Joni M From: Trapper Date: 07 Mar 01 - 12:47 PM A quick search on GOOGLE.COM reveals this website, which posts that the Sher Music Co. has the lead to "Twisted" by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross in their "New Real Fake Book". - Al |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: Chords to 'Twisted' by Joni M From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa Date: 07 Mar 01 - 03:23 PM I found them in the Hal Leonard Jazz Fakebook. Since i play a diatonic instrument (folk harp) I had to change some of the chords to work, but it seemed to work fairly well. Mimosa |

Subject: RE: Chords to 'Twisted' by Joni M From: GUEST,Tom Date: 08 Mar 01 - 06:29 AM Sooooo Joni, Do you happen to recall the changes to the tune? I know it's in D and I have a couple chords but alot of them are escaping me. A co-worker and I would love to play this at a retirement party for a psychologist friend of ours as a little fun after dinner. Thank you, Tom P.S. It's very cool that you responded! |
Subject: Chords Add: TWISTED (Hendricks, Lambert, Ross) From: GUEST,Jim Gilkeson Date: 16 Oct 08 - 08:37 PM Hi, I got part of the way into "Twisted" (the song, I mean) in a recent guitar lesson. I took me a while to get used to the 13th chord, and the C7/9 is pretty dissonant, but it actually plays fairly easily. The song was originally done by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross in the '50s or early '60s. If you listen to their recording, you will notice how exactly Joni Mitchell replicates Annie Ross's original vocal. Try this: (4 beats to the measure) E9 / My analyst told me A13 / that I was right out of my head E9 / the way he described it E9 / he said I'd be better off dead than live A13 / I didn't listen to his jive A#dim / I knew all along that E9 / I knew all along C7/9 / that he was all wrong F#min / And I knew that he thought B7 / that I was crazy, but I'm Not (turn around) E9 / c7/9 / F#min / B7 Good luck, Jim G. |
Subject: RE: Chords to 'Twisted' by Joni M From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 17 Oct 08 - 03:48 PM Jim, Thanks for posting the chords, but it is probably too late for Tom's friend's retirement party in 2001. Which brings up a question. How do people dig up these old threads? Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Chords to 'Twisted' by Joni M From: GUEST,Jim Date: 02 May 09 - 01:28 PM Sorry, Roger, about not posting in time for the retirement party in 2001. If by threads you mean the postings to this site, or sites like this one, I think the only way is to either check in regularly or have some kind of email notification when there is an addition to the thread. Did you try to play "Twisted" using these chords? I performed it a couple of times myself. The song is known enough that there are usually people who sing along with parts of it. I find it a lot of fun to sing and play. Jim |
Subject: RE: Chords to 'Twisted' by Joni Mitchell From: Artful Codger Date: 02 May 09 - 10:30 PM Annie Ross set the words to a saxophone solo by Wardell Grey, who must be credited with the music. Ross was singing this song before the trio came into being. To quote the liner notes by Jon Hendricks on the LP The Best of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross (1974), describing the origins of the group: Meanwhile, Annie Ross, she of the Titian tresses, Balenciaga dresses and British background, was getting around, musically, recording her witty, creative lyrics to Wardell Gray saxophone solos like "Twisted," "Farmer's Market" and "Jackie". Those ineffable Fates were later to make her one of a group of thirteen singers Dave Lambert engaged to Sing a Song of Basie [1957, the first LH&R recording]—the only one who had any idea of what we were doing being Annie. And so from backgrounds of the most mutual interest we came together. |
Subject: RE: Chords to 'Twisted' by Joni Mitchell From: GUEST,Rob the Roadie Date: 04 May 09 - 08:41 AM Annie Ross singing Twisted was featured on the jazz programme on Radio Scotland on Sunday 3rd May. Angie Wright does a very good version of it as well. Got to get her a plug in somewhere. |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Twisted (from Joni Mitchell) From: keberoxu Date: 05 Dec 19 - 07:15 PM Feast your eyes -- if you dare -- on this written transcription of the tenor saxophone solo, by Wardell Gray whose music this is in the first place. solo transcription, "Twisted" This transcription appears on the memorial webpages to Wardell Gray. The musician who wrote all this out is identified as NYC musician Alex Hoffman. |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Twisted (from Joni Mitchell) From: keberoxu Date: 05 Dec 19 - 07:41 PM This was Wardell Gray. And here is his definitive performance of his own "Twisted" to which Annie Ross came up with her own lyrics. This music was recorded for Prestige Records, and is probably under copyright. |
