When I was younger I occasionally voted for Republican Candidates. I voted for John Anderson in the 1980 elecetion. I bought my sister a bodhran for her 40th birthday, thereby causing her to take bodhran classes at the Chicago New School of Folk Music. I have just purchased a drum that seems to be a cross between a bodhran and a rain stick, which I plan on giving her on her next birthday.
And I like Jacobite songs.
Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa!

Down by the river that flows by the coal yards.
Stands wooden houses with shutters torn down
There lives a girl everybody calls Patches
Patches my darling of Old Shanty town

We plan to marry when June brought the summer
I couldn't wait to make Patches my bride
Now I don't see how that ever can happen
My folks say No, and my heart breaks inside

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
But a girl from that place would just bring me disgrace
So my folks won't let me love you

Each night I cry as I think of that shanty
And pretty Patches there watching the door
She doesn't know that I can't come to see her
Patches must think that I love her no more

I hear a neighbor tellin my father
He said a girl name of Patches was found
Floating face down in that dirty old river
That flows by the coal yards in Old Shanty Town

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
It may not be right But I'll join you tonight
Patches I'm coming to you

"I have sinned!"

In 1842-1843 British forces under General Charles Napier conquered Sindh. It is said that he sent back to the Governor General a one-word message, "Peccavi" – Latin for "I have sinned". In actual fact, this pun first appeared as a cartoon in Punch magazine.

I still sometimes lapse into playing Bob Seger songs, at times I do this in the middle of a set. It is usually either Fire Lake or Turn The Page.

Forgive me Max, for I have sinned.

Thank you, jacqui. It's a rough world for those of us who wear our hearts on our sleeves. I doomed myself to folk perdition with the Manilow statement. I don't know what came over me.

I had a few hoots one night at a club gig and decided that it would be a good time to impress an audience with my abilities on the 12-string guitar, an instrument I had just acquired and had no idea how to play. I was told later that I spent a half hour tuning the instrument while telling jokes. The audience was in stitches, but eventually someone brought me my 6-string and took the 12-string away from me. My gawd, the things we do at times.

I once got very drunk, staggered on stage and gave an impromptu rendition of Johnny Standley's Its In The Book, complete with the song Grandma's Lyesoap, to a gathering, incredulous small audience. To make matters worse, I tried it again about 25 or 30 years later with a group of friends out in the wilderness, with more or less the same response.

I still am uncertain why I did it in the first place, let alone twice.

I used to know all the lyrics to all the songs on all the Peter, Paul and Mary albums - and didn't know the original lyrics to any of the traditional songs they altered.
I once sang "Tiny Bubbles" for a paying audience - and blew bubbles during the instrumental part.

Here's a sin and a continutation of the Jethro Tull thread creep. I'm a Tull fan and I don't like about half of their albums, including Heavy Horses and Benefit. I only like about half of Songs from the Wood, their great "folky" album.

Matt, I don't blame you for not being able to get into those. Try Aqualung and Thick as a Brick.

Exactly! That's how I think of it! If I can show at least one person that what they think they hate is not so bad, I'm happy. Massive Attack is GOOD stuff. Was just thinking of how cool it would be to do "Teardrop" with an uilleann pipe and fiddle...

Which brings us back to sins...And it's not a sin to bring different kinds of music to peole who would never otherwise have listened to it.
'Unfinished Sympathy' by Massive Attack, 'Forgot About Dre' and 'Into the Groove' all translate well to acoustic. Ask my bandmate, she worked 'em all out, and I sang along. I see it as providing a service, broadening people's horizons....
Just kidding!!!

Hanson rock!!! That's a bit freeaky, 'cos we used to do 'Man From Milwaukee', 'Mmmbop' and 'Madeline' with our faithful acoustic. It's nice doing harmony vocals on a Hanson song (if your voice hasn't broken!), and NO, I'm NOT joking...

Yeah, and as I've said on an earlier thread (ask Callie about this one!) we do an acoustic version of 'Mickey' by Toni Basil, AND we were doing it before Travis did Britney (but they DO do it so well, don't they).
They call them 'interpretations', NOT ripping off a tacky song and slowing it down so that your cool mates will accept it!!! It had to be done, though...

Peanut soup. After trying three different recipes, here's what I do now. Take about a cup of peanut butter and put it in your Crock Pot with a couple cans of chicken broth and a little milk (or cream if you want it really thick), mix it all up, let it cook on low all day while you're at work. Marvelous. It's also good with chunky veggies in it like celery, carrots, and onions. You could even put chicken in it if you like. Some folks like to serve it with chopped peanuts on top.

A lot of people think peanuts and chicken don't go together... but... how many of you have eaten peanut chicken at an Asian restaurant? Also Mister had a friend years ago that used to make a West African dish with chicken and peanut butter. Nowadays we tend to think of peanuts and peanut products in terms of sweets and candy, but really, a peanut is a legume, like beans and peas, and is really versatile. Some say it goes well with mayonnaise. ;-)

I have made pea soup before, too. Mmmmmmmmmm. Me and my Crock Pot, well, we're damn nigh inseparable for the winter months.
