Subject: Yippeeee! I've Done it! From: Hawker Date: 13 Mar 01 - 07:36 PM Just wanted to tell the world that at long last, after 2 years toil, hard work, determination and long nights typing it all out, I have finally completed my NVQ Level IV in Delivering Artform Development Programmes! Looks rather pithy when I read this back, but it has been a weight on my mind, and I have finally thrown off the shackles! Assuming I pass (and my assessor is sounding positive) I will be the first person in The South West of England, Possibly the UK to have achieved this qualification! I know what hard work went into it and Bloody Hell, I am proud of myself! Well, that's enough puffing out my feathers for one day, back to being Li'l Ol' Me again! Glass of wine time! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: BS: Yippeeee! I've Done it! From: Hawker Date: 14 Mar 01 - 04:26 PM Humbly Thanks All, NVQ = National Vocational Qualification Basically these are qualifications for work - competence based qualifications - this means that they are assessed in relation to ability to perform a job, task or function, but candidates also have to understand why things are done that way. Much of the assessment is carried out in the workplace by a qualified assessor. Qualifications in the arts and entertainment sector are relevant to employment and real job roles. Individuals prove their competence by developing a portfolio of evidence. I was lucky enough to be selected by Folk South West to go on what is a new scheme, (funded by The Lottery) Called Folk For All. 10 people were on the scheme, and were trained and then let loose on schools and adult groups in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. It was a fantastic experience, I learned a lot about myself, and immense experience as a performer and teacher/facilitator. Four of us decided to go for the Level IV which is in UK terms equivalent to a lower degree and the other six went for the level III roughly just about A-level + It took a lot of hard work and commitment, and though there were times I could have murdered him, I have to take my hat off to Eddie Upton, who saw me through the experience - and gave me the confidence to write my own material - and perform it! Artform Development Programmes are that - programmes geared to developing an artform - in my case Folk Arts. I already have lined up work on a project linked to the West Somerset Railway called Folk Along The Line, set up by another participant on the NVQ course and am looking at a link with Emigration from Cornwall to build into a project with teenagers next year, to link in with the Homecoming celebration in Cornwall in May 2002. I don't know that I'll make a living at it, but I'll have an enjoyable time trying - and it's funny but at 40, I think I have finally found my vocation in life! Hope that answered all your questions, I am available for workshops at festivals etc in songwriting, creating new dances, singing with confidence, children's singing games, corn dolly making and projects geared to a theme such as local history Plug over and (in a small humble voice) it all sounds a lot grander than it really is, but Hell! I am glad I did it! Cheers! Lucy |

Subject: RE: BS: Yippeeee! I've Done it! From: Hawker Date: 18 Jul 01 - 06:37 PM Update....... Just going to blow that little trumpet once more...... I PASSED!!!! with flying colours according to Eddie. Metier, the examining board said it was an EXEMPLARY portfolio! (how kind!) I still dont feel any different, only proud that at 40 I can still achieve! Anyone going to Sidmouth? Apparently, Shirley Collins is becoming the new Patron of Folk South West, and she will be presenting me with my certificate there at the Fortfield Hotel on Sunday 5th August at around 5 p.m.! and May I also take this opportunity to congratulate Moe Keast and Yvette Staelens, who also achieved their Level 3's and will also be there on the 5th. Way to go! ADVICE TO ALL.... YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! GO ON, HAVE A GO! |

Subject: RE: BS: Yippeeee! I've Done it! From: Helen Date: 18 Jul 01 - 07:12 PM I forgot to say that I am a Workplace Trainer & Assessor so I know what you are talking about re: competency based assessment and I understand the process you went through as well. It can be a lot easier/less stressful sitting in classrooms and taking tests, rather than actually being assessed on the job, but I think it's a much better and more practical way of training and assessing people's competencies. And it means that we, here at Mudcat, know that you really can do what you say you can do. Well done! Helen |

And more than that - I'd say this is going to be really, really important to a lot of us. I'm certainly going to see what can be done to get something similar going in Wales! This sort of programme is just what we need to be able to convince the powers-that-be that 'folk' deserves more attention! Thanks for telling us about it! And congratulations again! sian |

Subject: RE: BS: Yippeeee! I've Done it! From: Hawker Date: 06 Aug 01 - 02:24 PM Went to Sidmouth International Festival to be presented with my NVQ certificate yesterday. Shirley Collins, who was also welcomed as Folk South West's new Patron presented me with my certificates, and I had a really great time. Apparently The NVQ is equivalent to a degree and I now have the dubious pleasure of having the letters Dip R.S.A after my name! We then went to the Middle bar sing at the Anchor and had a great evening singing rip roaring chorus songs! Wish I could have stayed a bit longer, perhaps I'll go back for a day during the week! Work now begins in ernest! (Who's HE?) Lucy |
