Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: katlaughing Date: 15 Mar 01 - 03:27 AM Aliso, I don't know if it is minor or not and I don't know butterfly, but I do know I always enjoy Slip Jig and Reel by Steve Tilson. If you need the tune I could probably record from my cd of it to make a midi, I think, and send it to you. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Peter Kasin Date: 15 Mar 01 - 03:33 AM Morrison's, which is in E minor, is a great old standard. -chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: alison Date: 15 Mar 01 - 03:35 AM thanks Kat.. but its a tune I'm looking for rather than a song.... something to tag onto the end of a set.... "the butterfly" would be perfect.. but I already use it for another set..... I also already used the nice one from Riverdance.... the one where Jean Butler made me think... I HAVE to learn how to do that... haha slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: alison Date: 15 Mar 01 - 03:41 AM Morrison's is great.. but the one I found isn't a slip jig... just an ordinary one slip jigs are in 9/8 time... but thanks anyway..... good tune.... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Lady McMoo Date: 15 Mar 01 - 06:11 AM I often play The Kid on the Mountain (The Kid on the Mountain Bike as we call it here) with The Butterfly. Would that fit? mcmoo |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST,catlin Date: 15 Mar 01 - 07:03 AM Check O'Neils's Music of Ireland. There are 54 slip jigs listed. There are also some in the Fakebook, but they are not listed separately. |
Subject: From: GUEST,Astorsen Date: 15 Mar 01 - 07:39 AM O'Neil's is a great collection. Try also Roche's collection. It is another treasure. Salut, JL |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 15 Mar 01 - 08:11 AM Yes; these are among the best-known collections. O'Neill's collections are available online in abc format, incidentally, HERE. I guess, though, that the point of asking for recommendations is to avoid having to trawl through big anthologies, so I'd just mention The Humours of Whiskey, Brose and Butter and The Peacock Followed the Hen, Irish, Scottish and English variants, respectively, of the same tune; modal rather than minor, but with that feel. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Jon Freeman Date: 15 Mar 01 - 09:36 AM Not too fond of the 3 extra notes but Kid On The Mountain (already mentioned by mcmoo) is a good one. Jon |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Sorcha Date: 15 Mar 01 - 09:58 AM Road to Lisdoonvarna, e minor slip. Fairly easy, too. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Mar 01 - 10:02 AM Kid on the Mountain is good one to go with the Butterfly. It's well-known enough as a session tune to be worth adding to your repetoire. Besides, you can do the joke "How does the Kid on the Mountain go?" "Are we nearly at the top yet, Dad?" Les |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: katlaughing Date: 15 Mar 01 - 10:06 AM Sorry, Alison, I was thinking...it was late:-) Have you had a look at Alan's Midi book? I know that involves digging around, but there might be something enat by a Mudcatter you could use. Maybe smething Jeri wrote? Can't remember. Good luck, kat |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Jon Freeman Date: 15 Mar 01 - 10:41 AM I don't remember heaing a slip jig written by Jeri. I still have most of her tunes here (placed there at the time people were having trouble accessing Mudcat MIDIs - long since sorted out). Jon |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST Date: 15 Mar 01 - 10:56 AM "The snowy path" - is a good minor - ish slip jig played and written by Altan. I think its on their album Harvest Storm - its also getting to be known a bit in sessions now. "A fig for a kiss" is another good minor slip jig - on one of Matt Molloy's albums. "The Kid on the Mountain" as mentioned. "The sport of the chase" as played by Chris Newman and Moira Ni Chathasaigh. Ian

Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: alison Date: 15 Mar 01 - 08:40 PM thanks everyone..... I had a look through Roche's.... not many there, and mostly major...... I'll check O'Neill's thanks slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST,David Deacon Date: 15 Mar 01 - 09:10 PM Two of my favorites are "Rocky Road to Dublin" and "The Night Before Larry was Stretched." The second is in G minor so it can be a challenge but it's a great one. Both should be in O'Neill's. David |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Jimmy C Date: 16 Mar 01 - 01:06 AM Alison, Kitty Come Down From Limerick is a nice slip jig, I have not been able to find the music anywhere, maybe it's under another title ?. Barney McKenna recorded it years ago on one of the Dunbliner's live Albums. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Sarah the flute Date: 16 Mar 01 - 03:38 AM We play the Foxhunters with the Butterfly but what about De Dannan's version of Eleanor Rigby that's a minor and it's unusual |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Lynn W Date: 16 Mar 01 - 07:03 PM How about The Boys of Ballysodare - G major but I think it goes well with the Butterfly. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Lady McMoo Date: 16 Mar 01 - 07:15 PM I'd second Kitty Come Down From Limerick as well as a good one. Maybe I have the notes somewhere. mcmoo |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 16 Mar 01 - 08:57 PM So far as Kitty Come Down From Limerick is concerned, the Fiddler's Companion refers directly only to a recording by Martin Hayes (Kitty Come Down To Limerick), but there is also a reference to Will You Come Down to Limerick (A Tiocfad Tu Sios Go Luimnaig), which is also known as Munster Gimlet, after the verse sometimes sung with it: Kitty come down, come down, Kitty come down to Limerick. I knew by the glint in her eye That she wanted a touch of the gimlet! It looks as if they are all the same tune, more or less, though in G major (mixolydian) as a rule. Munster Gimlet is apparantly G Dorian, though, which might give it a minor-ish sort of flavour. I can't find notation for "Kitty", but it seems to have been recorded by a lot of people: you can hear a set of it played by Barney McKenna of the Dubliners, in RA or MP3 format, here: Dubliners Sounds. Not much of a minor feel to it, though! Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST,Anon3 Date: 17 Mar 01 - 03:57 PM Those minor slip jigs that result in pregnancy are then renamed major. Same for hop jigs. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Ruthie A Date: 17 Mar 01 - 06:20 PM Here's a link to A Fig For a Kiss and The Kid on the Mountain. The former is as played by Niall Keegan - a fantastic tune. It works brilliantly on flute, but sounds good anyway and isn't particularly hard on fiddle. The latter is fairly well known, but can still be a corker if it's performed right. Ruthie P.S. I hope the html works! I'm not very good at it. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 18 Mar 01 - 12:06 AM For the song "The Night before Larry was stretched" and a short history of the song and it's 2 tunes (given in ABC) see click from index in the Scarce Songs 1 file on my website. For the Scots tune "A Feg/Fig for a Kiss", 1759, see the Scots tunes index there. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Noreen Date: 18 Mar 01 - 02:49 PM Anon3: explain please? (Or will I be sorry I asked?) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST,Anon3 Date: 18 Mar 01 - 04:59 PM Noreen, if you can't figure that out, I figure you're not old enough to know. major slip - dance (all kinds) = ? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Noreen Date: 18 Mar 01 - 09:58 PM I'm obviously not old enough to know... phew, what a relief... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST Date: 19 Mar 01 - 10:36 AM Not sure if its a slip jig, but what about the hag at the kiln? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: guinnesschik Date: 19 Mar 01 - 05:33 PM Actually, Fig For A Kiss fits really nicely after Butterfly, and is quite easy on fiddle. Have fun wi' it! ;-)g'chik |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: Snuffy Date: 19 Mar 01 - 07:30 PM Alison isn't looking for one to go with Butterfly - she ends one set with that and wants a different one to end another set. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: alison Date: 19 Mar 01 - 10:21 PM thanks Snuffy.. took the words right out of my mouth.... thanks for the suggestions though......... slinte alison |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: alison Date: 22 Mar 01 - 09:59 AM just as a little note... because I didn't know it before... and maybe it could help someone else..... if you go to JCs ABC tunefinder...... and put 9/8 in the search box... you get a huge list of slip jigs including the key and mode..... until this I wasn't aware that you could search it by time signature......... found several nice minor ones slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 22 Mar 01 - 04:34 PM If the tune is earlier than c 1730 you have to search for 9/4 [E.g., "Old Simon the King"] or 3[/1]. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: good minor slip jig From: alison Date: 22 Mar 01 - 08:29 PM thanks Bruce... slainte alison |
