Subject: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Callie Date: 20 Mar 01 - 07:25 AM Are any Catters going to Sidmouth this year? I'm coming from a long way away to perform at it (Australia) so I'm hoping to make human contact with some of you folk! Callie |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: GUEST,Peter Boulby Date: 20 Mar 01 - 07:47 AM Were there from Monday onwards, work commitments prevent us being there from the start, where are you performing? Have you been before? We saw one of your country men there last year, he sold out over 5000 watching him , no clues who it was. Hope you have as good a Sidmouth as he did. It is a brilliant venue and very friendly. You might come across me at a singaround or Ceildh we performed in the choir last year with Sandra Kerr and are looking forward to the same again. regards Pete

Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Mar 01 - 04:44 PM Gervase is usually there, in the Middle Bar of the Anchor pub. I may try and get down for a day/night if I can bum a bed.... LTS |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 20 Mar 01 - 07:06 PM I'm thinking of going for the first time (NOT performing)... If only the pound was a little less expensive! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Callie at work Date: 20 Mar 01 - 09:54 PM Fantastic! I'm performing with the Solidarity Choir and Touchwood. It's our first UK venture and we're jumping out of our skins with excitement! I noticed quite a few Aussies on last year's program, including the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons. Let's keep in touch closer to the time. I look forward to meeting you! Callie |

Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 22 Mar 01 - 05:48 PM Ta Gervase, the Polyester palace sounds...... yeah, well, it all depends on work and stuff.. I might be able to persuade my biker friend to ride down for a day or so..... he is curious about my "other lifestyle"... poor sap! Who knows though, the husband might even be going for a weekend..... depends if Saxons can get a team together. LTS |

Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Joy Bennett Date: 25 Mar 01 - 06:55 PM any other catters out there goin to Sidmouth? |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 25 Mar 01 - 07:48 PM Too right, I'll be there again - my in-laws live in the town so have been going for a good few years. I also go to the Anchor most lunchtimes, for main bar instrumental sessions, or joined in with the MBS (Middle Bar Singers) last year: otherwise when not attending concerts or workshops the Bedford bar is great for sheer variety. I bought a "catsuit" from one of the Arena stalls last year (T-shirt and trousers wi' cats painted on - the mind boggles!) so any other "catters" will recognise me instantly ( unless lots of other people bought the same!!) Tattie B |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Joy Bennett Date: 10 Apr 01 - 04:23 PM There are rumors abound that Sidmouth is in trouble of being cancelled -- anyone know anything about that? i certainly hope it's on!! |

Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: JudeL Date: 11 Apr 01 - 10:31 AM Liz: Paul & I will be there have booked a "cottage" for the week,if you fancy a little more comfort than the polyester palace, give us a ring. If you've lost the number ask Micca. Jude |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Gervase Date: 12 Apr 01 - 07:50 AM Jude - you've booked a "cottage"! Somehow putting it in quotes reminds me of Joe Orton. Is Sidmouth really ready for that sort of thing?! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: JudeL Date: 12 Apr 01 - 09:25 AM Gervase: the reason I put it in quotes was because I find it strange to refer to any place that has 4 or more bedrooms as a cottage - even though that is one of the two ways the booking agent refers to it - the other term they use is, the property, which to me sounds a bit pretentious. Meanwhile what is it you are unsure if Sidmouth is ready for? I would have thought after getting Annie into that costume, and Tony's encounter with the riding whip - Sidmouth should be able cope with most things. Jude |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Gervase Date: 12 Apr 01 - 09:29 AM Too true - a bit of toilet trading would appear tame after Wimmin's Hour! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: JudeL Date: 12 Apr 01 - 09:38 AM I suppose the question is what next - now we've done the explosion in a lingerie factory look - we need a new theme. Got any suggestions? |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Gervase Date: 12 Apr 01 - 09:48 AM None that can be posted here! Tony O'Neill in the Barn at Towersey does a "dress-up" night, when Micca exposes his knees to the world under his kilt - but the thought of all those yellow tee-shirts under dinner jackets and over ball-gowns is maybe a bit too much. The trouble with fancy dress is that, at Sidmouth, everyone seems to dress like a loon. Seal always looks as if he's off to find the source of the Nile, and there are far to many daft hats (my own included). I suppose we could all perform in the buff, or our swimming scanties on the Thursday before hoofing off to sing in the sea. There again, think of all those impressionable children around... |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: JudeL Date: 12 Apr 01 - 10:05 AM Dress up like at Towersey wouldn't work without Second-hand Sue and her "alterations". As for the singing, sorry performing, in the buff, you've been associating too much with Dave Guest if you're talking about that - he keeps trying to persuade us to sing in the showers instead of the changing rooms at Grove. Jude |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: JeZeBeL Date: 12 Apr 01 - 01:52 PM I am going for the day as I am camping near Linton for two weeks so I may try and kip overnight, sorry play music all night with other mudcatters. It'd be great to meet up with others I haven't yet met. |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: wildlone Date: 12 Apr 01 - 03:37 PM I will try to make it, If only to have a meal at the donkey sanctury. If you see two bikers on an orange BMW it will be mother and I. see you there. dave. BTW it is mothers 75th birthday on the 31st may. |

Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Gervase Date: 15 Apr 01 - 06:26 AM Actually, if anyone's going to Sidmouth and has nowhere to stay, a couple of average-sized MBS teeshirts and a pole can provide a tent ample enough for a family of six! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: alanww Date: 31 May 01 - 12:35 PM Hi All I shall certainly be there for the whole week and, for the first time, I'm not buying a ticket - preferring the fringe events! That means I can afford to stay in a hotel! I look froward to seeing (among others I have forgotten - sorry!) Gervase, Chris and Gwynneth (with Oliver), Cliff (Wessex MM), Sid & Pam & Lin, Mike, Steve, Keith Beeby & Jenny, Mournful Bob (will he win the Gloom and Despondancy competition again?), Richard (When snow transforms ...), Rosie, Alison, Ann (with more newly composed songs?), Robin, Dave Earle & Elizabeth, Andy, Claire etc etc! But not Derek & Mary Droscher this year I gather. "Swing low sweet Chariot ... !" Alan |

Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Liam's Brother Date: 31 May 01 - 06:23 PM Bob Conroy and I will be at Sidmouth from Monday (possibly earlier) till Thursday. I don't know all our assignments yet but I do know we'll singing in the BBC marquee on Monday and in the Manor Pavillion on Wednesday, both at 2000. I'm sure we'll be doing some things in the day as well. Please say 'hello' if you see us.
All the best, |

"Oh, I like to rise when the sun she rises ... !" Alan PS Damn - I knew I would get into trouble! How ever could I have missed out Judy??!! So ... and not forgetting Alan White, Tony Day, Rosie, Rene, Diane and Gervase's friend Garrett(?) ... Well that's just about my best shot but I know that there will still dozens of others I have inadverently omitted! Sorry!! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Gervase Date: 01 Jun 01 - 05:54 AM Blimey, Allan; I'm impressed you can remember so many names! My brain's befuddled enough at the best of times, so remembring my own is achievement enough. On another tack, I don't know if it was something in the ale at Chippenham, but my throat's been rougher than a badger's arse all week - so much so that I massacred two songs at Maidenhead last night and didn't do much better at Sharp's on Tuesday. Maybe it was trying to keep up with the Wilsons wot done it! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: JudeL Date: 01 Jun 01 - 06:34 AM Excuses, excuses, it's more ale you need not less! Jude |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: GUEST,alanww Date: 04 Jun 01 - 07:47 PM Hi Gervase Yes, the beer was a bit iffy at Chippenham (and expensive at the Angel!) - that is after the first seven pints or so! Happily my voice has been ok since then (I had to drive from Chippenham so my intake was limited!) So I could sing "Ale ,Ale, Glorious Ale", "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and others tonight at a morris do - and thought of Sidmouth! "In South Australia I was born ... !" Wassail! Alan PS Please forgive us men Judy, we are only human! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: GUEST,jayohjo in Russia Date: 05 Jun 01 - 09:44 AM Heehee, all sorts of people turn up here that I never realised were here...if you see what I mean... As for me I'll be at Sidmouth too, stewarding if all goes to plan, and in the Middle Bar again quite possibly - but guaranteed to be trying to see Martin and Norma perform, bound to be amazing - in my opinion anyhow! ;) Jayohjo who'll be back from Russia specifically to be in time for Sidmouth hurray! Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: vectis Date: 05 Jun 01 - 04:03 PM I'll be there for the first part of the week, before I trot accross to Broadstairs. I'll be in the Bedford Arms when I'm not in the middle bar. Just watch out for the singing beertowels!!! |

(i only live a few miles away)the demon work demands most of my precious drinking time though.as a new member, it would be great to see some (if not all)of you at sidmouth, so if you are approached by a small dark haired scottish female chances are it'll be me. |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Louisa Date: 09 Jul 01 - 12:25 PM Yep, I will be there, stewarding, and playing my fiddle around the place as per usual. Will probably be in New Tavern, Bedford and Anchor quite a bit. Camping at the main site. See some of you in the Mexican tent for a few tunes and a plate of quesadillas I hope. I usually steward as a Mobile Information Person (if you've been before, one of those bored-looking and distinctly stationary people standing next to an 'A' board trying to flog programmes or dispense information) but thank goodness I'm doing something different this year. However I would just like to say please be nice to the Mobile Information People! Go and talk to them as it can get very lonely standing around on your own. see you there Louisa |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: English Jon Date: 09 Jul 01 - 12:32 PM Vectis, I'm mid 20's, a bit overweight and have a shaved head. I'll probably have a slack handfull of instruments kicking around, and keep bursting into song at inopportune moments. And by the end of a fortnight of camping, I will probably stink to high heaven and frighten old ladies. EJ |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: vectis Date: 09 Jul 01 - 07:13 PM See ya there Jon. I can be spotted modelling a collection of beer towels instead of a jacket. |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Jul 01 - 07:21 PM Don't forget your Mudcat T-shirts.
I should be in the Arts Centre bar sometime most days. And the Rugby Club bar some evenings. |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Gervase Date: 10 Jul 01 - 05:39 AM But John, at the end of the week, everyone stinks, so we don't notice it - not until we stand next to some non-folkie at the station and they slink off, quietly retching! |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: JudeL Date: 13 Jul 01 - 01:26 PM Speak for yourself Gervase I intend to find time to luxuriate in that ultimate piece of decadence a bath! A weekend of roughing it is one thing but a week of primative (and smelly) campsite facilities is a bit much. This year we've decided not to bother even getting tickets as we use them so little anyway that it just aint worth it! (not at them prices). The few concerts we want to see we can pay on the door. The only downer is that rules out the LNE's but we rarely make it up there anyway. Jude |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 29 Jul 01 - 04:42 AM I am going for the first time So any suggestions where to go and where not to go would be very welcome My friend has got us tickets but I am not sure what that gets us in to? Anyway I hope to see some of you there Sam my friend Louise is bringing her Accordian any chance you could listen to her play it while I sneak off to the pub? Roger |

Note that - the last... |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: BanjoRay Date: 29 Jul 01 - 10:01 AM I'm going this year. I'll be spending most of my time either jamming Old Time on the promenade or ditto in the right hand bar at the Bedford Arms. I've bought a season ticket, so I'll have to go to a few things to try and make it worth it - Incredible String Band, Lonnie Donegan for starters. I'll miss the lst night, as I'll be off to the Sacrewell Farm Old Time camping week near Peterborough, which will be a LOT cheaper and at least as much fun. Cheers |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Jul 01 - 11:04 AM McGrath - the fact that I outsang the Wilsons (and have also done the same to Ian Bruce at the Middle Bar) has nothing to do with the fact that it was the last Saffron Walden.... that was politics, personal problems and a dispute over the viability of a change of dates. I'm trying to find a way of depositing child for a sleepover, whilst I try to find a place to doss...... |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 Jul 01 - 05:10 PM Reminds me of the story of the magician's parrot on the Titanic.
If anybody feels like trying to set up a Mudcatters gathering, they could stick something in the Newsletter, or on the notice board next to the box office. |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: GeorgeH Date: 30 Jul 01 - 06:32 AM The best sessions (IMO) are in the Radway . . though others will disagre. Also, it can be well worth the treck out to "The Volunteer" (but we always seem to get there just as things are winding down . . ) Ralpie is supposed to be in the Radway on Wed. lunchtime. Lonnie Donnegan is the one place we're unlikely to be! I guess we'll try to get to a couple of our daughter's "concert" spots, plus the "Shooting Roots" showcase at the end of the week ('scuse the Proud Parent bit!) G. |
Subject: RE: Catters going to Sidmouth? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Jul 01 - 07:50 AM The Swan used to have a good fringe session going, but it seems to have died away the last few years. It's conveniently situated also. |

I have to be there on Sunday evening as I am being presented with my NVQ Level 4 in 'Delivering Artform Development Programmes' certificate by Shirley Collins, the new Patron of Folk South West, at the Fortfield Hotel, before and after this event, me and my man will be hoping to join a singaround somewhere, Middle Bar sounds good..... look out for me, I'll be wearing a smile! (More news of him on the Hyde Folk Club's NEW site. http://beehive.thisissouthdevon.co.uk/hydefolk Seeing as he's not online, at least I can plug him! (He knows me as Den, from Mad Rush) He's got a superb album of his own songs out. (Hope it wasn't a secret Keith). For my benefit, could you say loudly every hour, 'Any mudcatters here?' Then we can see what everyone looks like before the sun goes in again. I'm off to find a snap at the picture gallery of all the aforementioned, persons. Love Deni the duck
