Subject: Gracie Fields song, 'Sally'
From: GUEST,retired@lineone.net
Date: 21 Mar 01 - 05:29 AM

Gracie Fields, a woman from Lancashire, England, was a famous singer and commedienne in the 1930 - 1947. Other well-known recordings were Now is the Hour and Wish me Luck as you Wave me Goodbye.

Please, can anyone supply me with the words of (what was) her Signature Tune, "Sally?"

Thanks, Shirley.

I can remember bits of it (as usual). If you do a web search there are official and fan sites for GF but at first glance don't seem to offer lyrics. I may have it in a song book at home ( I post from work).
Sally, Sally ,Pride of our alley
You're more than the whole world to me

That's the couplet that sticks in the memory. I'm sure Joe Offer or Steve Parkes will come up with the lyrics before me.

One verse is here. Perhaps there isn't more?

Here's lots about Gracie Fields, from Rochdale Museum - but no lyrics.

Subject: Lyr Add: SALLY (from Paul McCartney)
From: IanC

There doesn't appear to be very much more ... this version looks as if it was transcribed from a Paul McCartney pre-concert soundcheck (though he seems to have done it during one or two concerts). Does give author(s) though.

Sally (Leo Towers/Harry Leon/Will Haines)

Sally, Sally, pride of our alley,
You're more than the whole world to me.
Sally, Sally, don't ever wander
Away from the alley and me.

(Spoken)
'Ladies and gentlemen, Reginald Dixon and the Blackpool Tower Orchestra.
Come on Reg! Lovely! Lovely! Lovely!
I love the way this boy plays, I love it!
Marvellous, marvellous, I love it, I love it!'

Oh now when you're away there are grey skies,
And when I'm away there are even more grey skies
Than the grey skies I talked about before.

Sally, Sally, don't ever wander
Away from the alley and me. Oh.

(Spoken) 'Thank you, thank you, thank you so much.
Thank you, thank you so much.
For coming here to Batley tonight.
So lovely!
Thank you so much!'

from here

Sally

Gracie Fields did a film in 1932 called "Sally In Our Alley" which I assume is based on the title of the Henry Carey song which is in The Oxford Book of English Verse. Possibly these lyrics were written to go with the film?

Cheers!
Ian

Lyrics copied from http://ingeb.org/songs/sallysal.html
And the same lyrics are at http://old-love-song-words.20m.com/Dad%20Songs%20Page%202.htm#Sally

SALLY
(Leo Towers/Harry Leon/Will Haines)

Sally, Sally, don't ever wander away from the alley and me.
Sally, Sally, marry me, Sally, and happy forever I'll be.
When skies are blue, you're beguiling,
And when they're grey, you're still smiling, smiling.
Sally, Sally, pride of our alley, you're more than the whole world to me.

Sligh thread drift,
Gilbert O'Sullivan sang (in "Permissive Twit")

By now the word
Will no doubt have been heard
By almost every bleeding nosy parker in our alley
all except that is
Our own great aunt Liz
Who I hear's been deaf since the day our Grace
recorded Sally
, Sally, Sally

YouTube has two recordings of Gracie Fields singing SALLY:
An early one (1931?) and a later one (1956).

SALLY
(Leo Towers/Harry Leon/Will Haines)
As sung by Gracie Fields

[1] Sally, Sally, don't ever wander
Away from the alley and me.
Sally, Sally, marry me, Sally,
And happy for ever I'll be.
When skies are blue, you're beguiling,
And when they're grey, you're still smiling, smiling.
Sally, Sally, pride of our alley,
You're more than the whole world to me.

[2] The skies were blue when I met you, Sally.
You were my gal, my little pal, so true.
You came along, made life a song, Sally.
If I lost you, I wonder what I'd do.

REPEAT PART 1.

[Note: in the 1956 version, she changes the pronouns in part 2: "when he met you...you were his gal..." etc.]
