Could someone please help me to find the lyrics to "Time is Tempest". I heard it sang at a folk festival and thought it would be a great session song. I know it was by J. Broomhall (don't know what the J. stands for).

Thanks

Ophelia

Time is a tempest and we are all travellers
we are all travellers
we are all travellers
Time is a tempest and we are all travellers
Travelling through the storm

couple of verses I can't remeber.. all following the same pattern.... the only one I vaguely recall is....

so lift up your voices and sing of the wind and rain......

maybe it'll jog someone else's memory

slainte

Subject: Lyr Add: TRAVELLING THROUGH THE STORM (Broomhall)
From: Tony in Darwin

Hi Ophelia,

It's called Travelling Through the Storm, by John Broomhall. This is the way it was recorded by Martin Pearson and John Thompson in Brisbane in 1998

_____________________________________________

TRAVELLING THROUGH THE STORM
John Broomhall

Time is a tempest and we are all travellers
We are all travellers, we are all travellers
Time is a tempest and we are all travellers
Travelling through the storm.

Our cities are crowded, our forests are falling
War clouds above, angry voices are calling
Five minutes to midnight, there's no time for stalling
It's time to share our load.

So lift up your voices and sing of the wind and rain
Sing of the wind and rain, sing of the wind and rain
Lift up your voices and sing of the wind and rain
Travelling through the storm.

For time is a tempest...

They've poisoned the oceans, they've dug the great rivers,
They've killed all the jungles, they're takers, not givers
They call it progress but it gives me the shivers
We're in for a winter that's cold.

So lift up your voices...

For time is a tempest...

So brothers and sisters we'll join hands together
With love in our struggle we'll face the foul weather
And when the sun shines through and blue skies will gather
Our journey will take us home.

So lift up...

For time is...

Cheers, Tony

I'm pretty sure John Thompson is co-author.

Correct, Callie, and my apologies to John Thompson; he added the last verse. I've just compared his version with that recorded by Alan Scott (Travelling Through the Storm, with Keith McKenry, 1996).
By the way, the penultimate verse should read "They've poisoned the oceans, they've dammed the great rivers...".

...mea culpa.

Cheers,

Tony

Dear Tony - thankyou for those lyrics, I very much appreciate it. I didn't know about John Thompson, I only found out about John Broomhall through a search on the net which uncovered a radio national broadcast song list which attributed the song to Broomhall and was sung by Alan Scott.

Thankyou you also Callie.

Regards, Ophelia

Ophelia

If you happen to be in Australia around Easter time, head to the National Folk Festival in Canberra. John Thompson and Martin Pearson perform the song often (too often!?). I wonder if it's as well known outside Australia?

Dear Callie,

I heard Martin Pearson sing the song at the National last year and thats how I know about it. The other day I just found myself singing it (what I remembered of it) out of the blue and thought what a good piece it would be to sing. You may actually get to hear me sing it at the Shannon someday in the not too distant future!

Thanks, Ophelia

Subject: Lyr Add: WINE IS TO GET PISSED
From: GUEST,Jennyfitz
Date: 05 Dec 02 - 09:16 AM

Er ... and there is a parody, of course ...

WINE IS TO GET PISSED
Jenny Fitzgibbon and Karl-Eric Pasonen
(with apologies to John Broomhall)

Wine is to get pissed and we are all revellers
we are all revellers, we are all revellers
Wine is to get pissed and we are all revellers
Revelling through til dawn

Our pubs they are crowded, our pissed friends are falling
Smoke clouds above, angry barstaff are calling
"Five minutes to midnight, you're drunk and appalling
It's time! So hit the road!"

So lift up your glasses and swill all the beer and wine,
So lift up your glasses and swill all the beer and wine,
ill all the beer and wine, swill all the beer and wine,
Revelling through til dawn

For Wine is to get pissed …

We've poisoned our kidneys and dammed up our livers
We've felled all our IQs and we dribble like rivers
to our cars we must progress, don't it give you the shivers
It's time to hit the road (Cue crash noises)

So lift up your glasses...

Yes, I learnt it from the Martin Pearson/ John Thompson recording as well, and my singing partner and I sing it quite often, with occasional added harmonies from our friend, Bill. We liked it so much that we wanted to include it on the CD we are recording. It was only after talking to John Broomhall at a festival in order to get his permission to record it that we discovered that the 3rd verse was written by John Thompson. John B told us that he has a couple more verses and he would send them to us. Now he has sent us the whole song and we noticed some of the wording all through the song is different from what we have been singing. We are not sure whether he has changed them or whether Martin Pearson and John Thompson changed them, but we are finding it hard to relearn something we thought we knew really well. I suspect the former is the case and it is a work in progress. I must say I rather like the last two verses. Anyway, here is the copy he sent me, word for word.

TIME IS A TEMPEST
(John Broomhall)

Time is a tempest and we are all travellers
We are all travellers, we are all travellers,
Time is a tempest and we are all travellers,
We're travellin' through the storm.

Chorus: So lift up your voices and sing of the wind and rain,
Sing of the wind and rain, sing of the wind and rain.
We'll lift up our voices and sing of the wind and rain
Travellin' on through the storm.

Our cities are crowded, the forests are falling,
War clouds above, angry voices keep calling;
Two minutes to midnight is no time for stalling,
Just time to share our love.

Chorus: So we'll lift up our voices...

They've poisoned the oceans and dammed the great rivers,
They've bulldozed the jungles, they're takers not givers,
And they say that it's progress, well it gives me the shivers,
We're in for a winter that's cold.

Chorus:

But there are places of beauty and pathways to guide us,
Sunrise and sunsets are never denied us;
With love in our hearts and true friends beside us
We can still reach the stars up above

Chorus: If we lift up our voices...

So we'll keep our arms wide through all kinds of weather,
Where there's sorrow and suffering we'll face it together,
And we'll turn this around if it takes us forever,
What else in the world can we do?

Chorus: But lift up our voices and sing of the wind and rain,
Sing of the wind and rain, sing of the wind and rain
We'll lift up our voices and sing of the wind and rain
We're travellin' through the storm.

                        (C)John Broomhall, Mootwingee Music 2002

We'd sorta like to sing "logged all the forests" rather than "bulldozed the jungles" We don't have jungles in Australia - bush, forests and desert - not jungles.

I forgot to mention - the Shannon isn't on any more. That's assuming you're talking about Sydney. And Jennyfitz, I really liked the parody - I fell about in fitz of laughter.

Anyone got the dots or a midi for this wonderful song?
John Thompson sang it at the Tap & Spile Inn at Whitby last week during a fleeting visit (but I don't trust my memory!)
"I heard of some ringing, some dancing and singing!"

Thanks for the thoughts sandra in sydney & JennyO.
I had hoped to avoid doing that, as I know John & Nicole are on their tour of the UK at present, and I didn't want to bother them. However, I may catch up with him at one of their gigs ...
I have a tune in my mind anyway but, occasionally in the past when I have learned a new song in this way, I have (slightly) mis-remembered the tune - which can be embarassing! So now I don't trust myself!
"They've poisoned the oceans ...!"
Alan
