Subject: Hog Eye Navvy From: GUEST,Mike Byers Date: 23 Mar 01 - 08:12 AM A year or so ago, I came across a group from the Indianapolis area called "Hog Eye Navvy". They do some great stuff, and their signature tune is, as you might guess, "The Hog Eye Man". But I seem to recall another group by this name from back in the 1960s or 1970s. Or maybe it was an album with this title. Does anyone else recall this group/album? |

Subject: RE: Hogeye Navvy From: GUEST,matthew - chantyman Date: 23 Mar 01 - 07:22 PM Do you really remember the 60's and 70's? I can't find any references to a group named "Hogeye Navvy" so you're still in the hunt. The song "Hogeye Man" is a traditional chanty though no one has been able to tell me what a Hogeye is. Any ideas? |
Subject: RE: Hogeye Navvy From: GUEST,Mike Byers Date: 23 Mar 01 - 11:14 PM Yep, I sure enough remember the 1960s and 70s (or at least parts of 'em). About the only reference to a "hogeye" I've found is a type of barge that was used off the California coast in the late 1800s. I believe there's also a similar chanty called "The Oxeye Man", so this is entirely a mystery to me. |

I'm sure if you search "hogeye" you'll get some answers to your questions and more questions to pursue. Happy hunting! |
