Subject: RE: Folk music weekend From: ukelady Date: 12 Apr 01 - 02:57 PM We'd love to have you join us on our Spring Folk Music Weekend. Here are descriptions of our Weekend Staff. WILD GOOSE NATION - Craig Edwards, Mike Fischman and Dirck Westervelt, exceptional musicians who live around New England, but who have traveled and lived in West Virginia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ireland, Mali, Zimbabwe and Brittany. Among them they play guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, bass, piano, button accordion and harmonica. The band was formed two years ago and they play an eclectic mix of traditional music: string band, Appalachian, Blues, Cajun, Celtic and Swing. ROBIN PATON - son of Folk Legacy's Sandy and Caroline Paton, grew up listening to traditional music of all kinds. At age 14 he taught himself to play clawhammer banjo by wearing out his Folkways album of Wade Ward. In the late 70s he began to play and sing traditional Irish music. Robin plays music from Appalachia, the British Isles and Ireland, on fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, mandola and octave mandolin. MICHAEL ALPERT - is a multi-talented performer who has an extensive knowledge of Yiddish and Eastern European music. An accomplished violinist, he also plays accordion and drum. And oy, can he sing! Expect workshops covering the Yiddish ballad tradition and the Klezmer revival. There will also be an in depth singing workshop and one on playing instrumental Klezmer music. Bring your voices and your instruments. Michael will teach us some dances, too. MARY DEVLIN - leads contras, English Country dance, triplets and squares. She's known for calling dances that emphasize great connections -- "feel good" dances! New as well as experienced dancers from coast to coast have loved Mary's quick and explicit teaching, clear, crisp calling and flowing dances. Besides calling and dancing, Mary is on the Country Dance and Song Society's Board of Directors, and also on the Executive Board. Mary's infectious spirit of joy and fun makes her one of the Northwest's favorite callers, and a favorite around the country. Subject: RE: Folk music weekend From: Art Thieme Date: 01 May 01 - 09:49 PM I been there and I done that. (These folks were nice enough to have me on staff back in the latter third of the last century.) And it's a wonderful gathering of sincere and talented folkies in super surroundings. I love those foothills of the Berkshires in N.W. Connecticut. (But then again, I liked Torrington too. There's no accounting for taste.) And you'll only be a few miles from Folk Legacy Records out on Sharon Mountain Road. I envy any of you who get there. I picked up many songs at Pinewoods weekends and at Their camp in Massachusetts---like "Master Of The Sheepfold" from Jerry Epstein. (Hello Dr. J.) Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Folk music weekend From: Suffet Date: 02 May 01 - 07:01 AM One important point of information: New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club (Folk Music Society of New York, Inc.) was founded about 35 years ago by people from the New York metropolitan area who met each other at Pinewoods Camp in Massachusetts. We are still a participating organization with Pinewoods Camp, but we and they are two completely separate entities. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Folk music weekend From: GUEST,mg Date: 16 Sep 02 - 04:39 PM I didnt' realize that was the same weekend as the Getaway and Sunnycamp. Can all computer nerdettes and nerds think of a way to briefly hook up. Can we launch a satellite in time perhaps? Well, at least everyone bring cellphones and we can all sing one song together. mg |
Subject: RE: Folk music weekend From: GUEST,Anne Price Date: 16 Sep 02 - 07:35 PM Hi, Whoops. I meant to copy Steve's message about the Fall 2002 weekend and start a new thread, but I accidentally copied the info from last Spring. Anyway, the Spring Weekend was great and the Fall Weekend will be too. Dave and Anni Fentiman are wonderful English singers who do marvelous unaccompanied harmonies. Dave writes songs that sound traditional, and there is no greater compliment. They're nice people too! Camp Friedman in Falls Village CT is especially beautiful with the Autumn foliage. Come join us for a fun weekend. Anne Price |
