Come join us for this great event!!!

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club Folk Music Society of New York, Inc. 450 7th Avenue #972 New York, NY 10123 (212) 563-4099

PRESS RELEASE

Contact for this event: Evy Mayer, (718) 549-1344 after 11 AM only.

Bruce Molsky, old-time fiddler plus - great singer, to appear in New York City, Friday, April 13, at 8 PM, in Pinewoods Series Concert.

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club will present traditional musician Bruce Molsky in concert at Public School 41, 116 West 11th Street near 6th Avenue in Greenwich Village, New York City, on Friday evening, April 13, 2001. The show begins at 8 PM. This concert is one in a series of six per year presented by Pinewoods and is free to club members. General public admission is $13. Seniors citizens and students pay only $9 each. Children¹s admission is just $6. For further information the public can call Evy Mayer at (718) 549-1344 after 11 AM.

One of the most influential old-time fiddlers around today, Bruce Molsky is also a remarkable guitarist, banjoist and singer. His high-spirited music melds the haunting mountain sounds of Appalachia with the power of the blues and the rhythmic intricacies of traditional African music. The Washington Post says Bruce's music "set into motion melodies that radiate enormous spirit and momentum," and Sing Out! says his fiddling "combines precision and abandon so perfectly that it raises the hairs on the back of your neck."

Bruce has performed extensively at festivals and concert venues throughout the United States, including at Lincoln Center in New York City and at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC. He toured the United Kingdom with internationally acclaimed fiddler Kevin Burke and others in the historic Fiddles on Fire tour, and he has been a featured performer at Fiddles of the World in Nova Scotia, Canada. Bruce has also toured extensively in Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Finland.

In addition to winning numerous awards at fiddle and banjo contests throughout American South, Bruce has been featured on the Minnesota Public Radio program A Prairie Home Companion. His new solo CD recording, Poor Man's Troubles, has received great praise by the Washington Post, the Washington Times, Bluegrass Unlimited, and others

I should just add that if you are a CD*NY member and you are coming to the Bruce Molsky concert in New York on April 13, you need only pay $11 admission. Of course if you are a CD*NY member you might as well join NY Pinewoods Folk Music Club and come to the Bruce Molsky concert plus five other great folk music concerts for free.

Undecided? Then here's a special deal for CD*NY members. Come to the concert and pay $11. If you like what you hear, then tell us before you leave and we will credit that $11 towards your annual membership dues. Just say, "Steve sent me" to the beautiful young lady collecting the money and she will undoubtedly ask "Which Steve?" But be persistent and you efforts will be rewarded!

Don't forget!<

For those who can't make it to New York, you will be welcome in Mountain View, Arkansas when Bruce Molsky will be playing at the Folk Center April 20 and 21. He will be performing on the Friday and Saturday evening concerts and presenting a workshop Saturday afternoon.

Thanks Steve - I'll take the "beautiful" and most especially the "young"

"Steve sent me" will be good enough -- I will try not to confuse the issue by asking which Steve. Though there will be at least two at the concert.

Wish I could go to Arkansas -- I can never get enough of Bruce's fiddling and singing. He was at Pinewoods camp for Folk Music Week a few years ago and just blew me away.

As a friend of mine says, "Not bad on the eyes either."

I got a little confused when I read the top of the thread saying the concert was in April. That was the last time Bruce performed for NY Pinewoods. The new concert is indeed Jan 9, 2004. Don't miss Bruce this time! He blew everyone away the last time and is sure to do so again. I marvelous instrumentalist.

Bruce Molsky is quite a stunning player and singer. You have to go quite a long way to find someone as steeped in the real tradition, and as skilled as he is. . . And those who know me will tell you that I don't say that sort of stuff routinely.

I was fortunate enough to be in Bruce's band lab at the 1990 Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Washington. He helped me to change from a mediocre navel-gazing singer-songwriter guitarist into a mediocre old-time fiddle tune backup guitarist, and to learn what an incredible blast it is to play music with other people! I have Bruce's CD, "Lost Boy," and it's a gem.

Aloha,
Mark

Talking about gems, I recently bought Bruce's most recent solo CD, Poor Man's Troubles, and without a doubt it is among the four or five best albums of traditional folk music I have ever heard. And I have heard a lot! The secret to Bruce Molksy's musical genius is oxymoronic: complex simplicty. Once you hear him you will know what I mean.

As you can see by the thread, we last had Bruce do a concert for us (The Folk Music Society of New York) in April 2001. It was such a great concert, and Bruce is such a wonderful musician, that we felt the need to have him do another one. So, come and join us on Friday, Jan. 9th at the Advent Lutheran Church. The only complaint you will have is that the concert is too short.

He's one of the most fantastic musicians in traditional music. If you're anywhere within range of this venue, go see him. You'll never forget it.

I first heard Bruce Molsky at Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp. He is a marvelous instrumentalist, but even better, he knows how to use his remarkable skills to present traditional music at it's best, not to show off his own ego. As someone above said "complex simplicity." His 2001 concert in New York was one of the best I've ever heard, and I've heard alot. Don't miss Jan 9.
