PC Music editing software?

Hi. I recently purchased CoolEdit2000 to enable me to modify/edit/play about with recordings I had made while playing in local sessions. Its a great program, easy to use and understand. Its also not that expensive at $69.

What music editing PC software would other Mudcatters use?

I don't have the foggiest Mike. I'm still hunting around for software that will transpose guitar music into guitar tablature. CoolEdit2000 sounds cool though.

I use Cakewalk Pro 3 its good but old now, the latest version is Pro 9 I believe. Regards, Dave

i use cool edit 2000 with the studio plugin so i can record 4 tracks in one go.... great program, easy to use and inexpensive. I have looked at Cakewalk and cubase but found them not as accesable for what I want to do. If you are doing any midi or digital stuff then you need something more powerful then Cooledit, but if you are just doing wave editing, then cooledit works great....

I have Cool Edit and Sound Forge - SF wins hands down. It is much more flexible for editing Wave files - I've used it to transfer a vinyl album with a big scratch onto my hard drive, then carefully pencilled out the scratch...

For MIDI I'm still using Cakewalk 3 - the newer versions just don't seem as solid or intuitive.

For actual printed music, Noteworthy is one of the best - Cakewalk has some idiotic quirks like insisting on Bb when the context demands A#, for example. It also insists on making the odd bar which is a little 'busy' spread the width of the page - but it's great for MIDI.

I prefer sorting out the MIDI in Cakewalk, then using Noteworthy to print out the dots.

Bernard... sound forge looks good, i'm going to check out the demo... But.... for almost $300 less, Cooledit is a great value, unless there's another version you have, the one I found, Sound forge 5, is worth $350 if you download and buy that way.......

I'm on SF4, which is a trifle elderly, but it does everything I need (erm... almost... !!)

This evening I've been transferring an old cassette onto CD - Sound Forge made light work of it. My trick is to slightly under record, then sort out the volume to 0dB on each channel afterwards - it avoids any 'clipping' (digital recording is so unforgiving!).

Anyway, that CD should just about have finished 'burning', now...

I've had pretty good luck with "Melody Assistant" from MYRIAD Software (France).

It's not perfect, and has some irritating little quirks, but at $15 to register after a free trialware download, ye can't go too far wrong! "Melody" has a lot of the sophisticated audio gimcracks you mention above, way more than I have a clue what to do with them, and has been said by some who apparantly know that it compares favorably with some of the more upscale programs costing in the $300 range.

I like the feature of being able to pirate a MIDI file off of the web, have this put it up as a score for me to transpose (into a whistle or fife key, for instance), arrange, edit, print, record, and/or send to a chum as a *JPEG file if they don't have the program. I have gotten regular free upgrades for over a year now and excellent tech support.

MYRIAD also has a music score scanning program kind of like musical OCR called "OmER" which is intriguing, but I've never been able to get it to work very well. I'm hoping that they will eventually get it fixed.

For a free download, It's gotta be worth a try, eh? Let me know how ye like it!

There's PowerTab too, which is free. It's not great, but it's better than nothing, and of course it's free.

Sound Forge for audio editing, Cool edit 96 is handy for the save region feature.

Cubase and Nuendo if you want to make your own record. Some people get on better with Logic audio, but it's pretty steep to learn. If your PC will cope get "Pro Tools Free" of digidesign.com or whatever it is. It's 8 track, and quite limited but the quality is good.

for notation, get Sibelius if you can afford it. Nothing else comes close. I'd recommend personal composer for windows if you want something at the budget end.

Theres a lot of Warez out there, if your conscience will allow... Not sure that I approve, but then again, we've all taped stuff off the radio...

alt.binaries.sounds.utilities is a good starting place.

Of course,what you do there is entirely up to you.

My view is if you find you use something a lot, go and buy it.

I have used Cakewalk Pro Audio since version 6.0, I'm using 9.03 now, and before that I used Home Studio for a number of years. CWPA9 has a feature that will export tabliture info to a text file.

I just banged out a few weird notes on a track, creating chords from the fretboard view of the staff view in Cake, and exported to Tab. The resulting textfile contained this

D -5-|-5-|---|
A -6-|-4-|-3-|
E ---|---|---|

I wasn't trying to create real chords so don't mind the mess. :`)
