Subject: Mixed Feelings
From: Michael in Swansea

Last night our shanty group, Baggyrinkle, had their first gig of the season. Nice, appreciative, crowd. We couldn't have been too bad, sold 4 cd's and an had invite back. Left there on a high. It's always good to get the first one under your belt. Over the next couple of weeks we have Wednesday, Pat Smith's (of Callennig fame) birthday bash at the Llantrisant Folk Club, Saturday & Sunday, Model Boat show Swansea Marina and the following weekend Lancaster!!!!
Why the mixed feelings? Today is the 15th anniversary of my Dad's death. He used to enjoy a good shanty session, but never saw us perform. Right now I'm rather melancholy. I miss my Dad.

Mike

I know exactly how you feel. I miss my Dad too. My Dad died 2 years ago next June but sometimes it feels like only yesterday, doesn't it? Memories are good though.

My Dad and me used to do Flannigan and Allen duo's. He's been gone now for going on 13 years but I still miss him, and he still comes up a lot in conversations with friends.

I know how you feel mate.

Cheers

Bugsy

Wish Patti happy birthday for me, & tell her I'll see her soon. I'll be in Miskin for Easter visiting family, hopefully though the fest is cancelled there'll still be enough folk about for the odd song or two.

My dad died when I was 9 months old. Count your blessing - you knew him.
Does that cheer you any?
May your Baggy never wrinkle.

And I'm sure he'd be pleased if he knew some of his old songs were still rolling down to Rio. I feel both sad and happy when I'm singing a shanty I learned from someone who's slipped his cable; I'd be a lot sadder if I didn't try to pass such songs on.

Well, your post evokes mixed feelings too, Michael. I'm sorry for your melancholy, and that you're missing your Dad. But I'm happy for your group, and that you're doing music that your Dad really enjoyed. He's there with you in a way, I suppose, just by virtue of you thinking about him so much. Ickle Dorrit says "get on with it" and that's all you can do, but before you do that, make sure you leave yourself some time to just miss him and think about him. Margaret

It's good that you had a family that shared your musical interests. Mine thought that anything not by Jim Reeves or the Wurzels was rubbish of the first water. Consequently I grew up experimenting with all types of music, and grew to like the louder, noisier, less salubrious varieties the best. Given the choice between Queen, Mozart and Martin Carthy, I'd go for Queen every time, although, I have busked with Carthy doing some good solid rock and roll...... so maybe....... But still I end up singing folk and church. Can't win really.

No matter what I sang, they never joined in, except in church and that doesn't count. They never heard me perform in a club or stage, they never shared any of the better concerts or festivals, they just told be to stop shrieking at home.

He's definitely still singing with you in spirit. Keep your chin up. If we didn't experience melancholy, we wouldn't be human.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I wasn't very down yesterday, just a case of .... well you know, anniversaries, last night I had a pint of the black stuff in his memory
Although Dad enjoyed a shanty session, his favourite performers were the Rolling Stones, (to listen to - he couldn't stand the sight of them!) and Emmylou, *sigh* (to look at as well as listen to).
Roll on Llantrisant and Pat's birthday, I may have Thursday off work.

Michael,Isn,t Llantrisant the hole with the mint??I can apreciate your loss and feel it with you,and offer my deepest sympathies, we keep our friends alive by retaining our mrmories of them.
But on a lighter note your thread title reminded me, I thought mixed feelings were seeing your new car roll of Beachy Head, with your Mother-in-Law in the back seat... forgive the irreverence, but if we don,t laugh..we weep and our friends (well, mine anyway)would prefer we laugh.

Micca,
I liked that one about the car, tickled Michael.
Llantrisant, yes indeed it is. Also famous for that pioneer of cremation, Dr William Price, the celebrated Arch-Druid who used to run around the mountains in the buff
