Subject: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 02 Apr 01 - 08:48 PM I have once again run out of performers for the Paltalk concert series. I will do one as soon as I recover enough of my voice to do so, which apparently won't be this week, damnit, and I'm going to try to schedule a Sunday afternoon concert with my family (Simple Pleasures). Other than that, no one has come forward. Volunteers will be GRATEFULLY accepted. To reiterate briefly, the concerts have been held in the Paltalk concert room, which is password protected. They have generally been on Thursday nights, starting at 8:00 and lasting for an hour or so. The details are entirely up to the performer. We have done an alternate night or two to suit performer's schedules, and a few have started earlier to make the concert more accessible to folks across the Pond. If someone would like to volunteer to open the room for me, we could start at 6:30 or 7:00 regularly (My work schedule makes it difficult for me to open the room much earlier than 8:00). This is EDT, of course. So, how about it? If you are interested let me know, either in this thread or PM, or e-mail me at moorse@together.net |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Matt_R Date: 02 Apr 01 - 09:52 PM I can do one next Monday night....because there is nothing planned, and my parents WON'T be calling! |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Margaret V Date: 03 Apr 01 - 08:22 PM Bigchuck, you could pencil me in for Thursday, April 26th. I think that date should be fine. Margaret |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 04 Apr 01 - 07:29 AM Margaret, I am delighted to do so. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Grab Date: 04 Apr 01 - 07:47 AM Bigchuck, you can put me down for one sometime if you want - bung me a PM if you do. But I can't start much later than 10pm, UK time, which I think is about 5pm over there. The room isn't soundproofed, and my wife tends to want to go to sleep by 11pm! Graham. |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 04 Apr 01 - 07:57 PM Graham, that's fine and sounds like a good idea to me. I'll need someone to do the admin then, because I don't get out of work until after 6:00 our time. Noreen? How about Thjursday April 19th for you? Matt, if you're sure you can give us your undivided attention for an hour nwxt Mon., it's yours. Let me know what time you want to start. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Noreen Date: 04 Apr 01 - 08:10 PM I'll do that, Sandy, if you like. Remind me nearer the time?? *BG* Good on you, Margaret and Graham! Noreen |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Amergin Date: 04 Apr 01 - 08:12 PM Oh boy, a full hour of listening to Margaret's lovely voice....I bloody well can't wait! |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Noreen Date: 04 Apr 01 - 08:14 PM Hey Nathan- how come you're only nice to Margaret?? |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Amergin Date: 04 Apr 01 - 09:06 PM Well, Noreen, since she is a bit closer to me than you (although on the otherside of the country), she is quite a bit more dangerous than you are..... |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Margaret V Date: 05 Apr 01 - 12:28 AM Yes, VERY dangerous! Sandy, I was on paltalk tonight and one of their eternal break-in messages came up that said that private rooms will now be limited to ten people unless the private room owner pays some kind of fee, as of April 9. Hassles, hassles... not that the crowds will be stampeding the hall or anything, but... I wouldn't have any objection to singing in the open room but it might be kind of high maintenance having to constantly explain the concert to newcomers. What do you think? Margaret |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 05 Apr 01 - 08:09 AM I just got a notice from Jacko to that effect. Actually it depends on the fee. Maybe we could do a pass the hat in effect. Depends on how they're going to do it. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Grab Date: 05 Apr 01 - 08:27 AM Well, there's that title text comes up to start with - you can always say in that what the purpose of the room is. Then you can abbreviate maintenance to "RTFM"! :-) April 19th sounds OK. Remind me earlier in the week, or I'm liable to forget. Cheers, Graham. |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Lanfranc Date: 05 Apr 01 - 08:58 AM I suppose that we have been lucky to get away with free connections so far, and that the question of making money from PalTalk other than through advertising had to arise. After all, none of their banners excite me enough to click on them. I don't go to the snug or the concert room to be sold insurance, perfume, porn or whatever - I go for the craic and the company. I, for one, would be open to a sensible subscription if it enabled PalTalk to continue and not disappear like so many .COM ideas, and which could even make a contribution to Mudcat funds in the process. After all, if I go out to a singaround, it costs me in petrol, entry, raffle tickets, beer, etc. In PalTalk, I hear songs from NZ, Alaska and all points east, often from people at least as talented as those one pays good money to hear elsewhere. OK it's not the same as a live gig where you are actually physically present, but it gets damned close on occasion! What say you? Alan |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 05 Apr 01 - 07:36 PM Alan, I feel the same way. BUT it does depend on how much they're gonna charge. Has anybody heard about charge amounts yet? Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Jon Freeman Date: 06 Apr 01 - 08:00 AM Sandy, I've tried to find the details of this new charge but I can find any information. While I am against the use of locked rooms for many purposes, I feel that the concert is best held in a locked room as I don't think it would be easy to admin an open room where everyone excecpt the performer is asked to keep quiet and I think that the effects of a disruptive person will be felt more by one person who is being asked to perform a whole concert than by the usual situation where anyone can sing. As sandy says, it would be good to know what they are charging. Llanfranc, we have no information yet. As it stands, going banner free is an option that individuals can pay for so I would assume this is therefore an addtional charge for using their facilities for a private function which may or may not display banners for those who haven't paid to go bannerless. Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: IvanB Date: 06 Apr 01 - 08:34 PM If the charge for a locked room is prohibitive, how about an open room with all mic's turned off except, of course, the performer's? I haven't opened a room as admin lately, but I believe that option is still there. Then persons who were disruptive in text could be ignored by anyone who was offended by them. |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 08 Apr 01 - 10:24 AM So Matt, are you doing a concert tomorrow/ (Mon) If so what time? Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: GUEST,Matt_R Date: 09 Apr 01 - 08:21 AM Well, I was planning on it being at 6:00pm Eastern. But that was before I got a cold :-( I haven't sung for a couple days now because my voice sounds terrible. And I was really looking forward to it too. |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 10 Apr 01 - 07:10 AM Alot of that going around Matt. Maybe in a couple of weeks when you feel better. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Apr 01 - 09:04 AM I have just had another look at Paltalk. I can only imagine that the option is for the fee based one which allows as user to advertise thier own website as a pop up as it is the only fee based option on the menu. That one is $19.95 per month. Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Margaret V Date: 10 Apr 01 - 10:38 PM Maybe the only way to figure this out is to get more than ten of us into the snug at once and see what message pops up. If it is $19.95 month I suppose we'll have to figure out whether passing the hat will work; and if it will work, I wonder if Max would like to use the pop-up ads to which we'd be entitled to advertise Onstage Media... Margaret |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: Tyke Date: 11 Apr 01 - 06:31 PM Glad to see Mrs Duck has picked up on the idea I told you about. Just sent you another email as I have been having a word with the Landlord of thr Tap and Spile in Whitby. He sounded if he liked the idea of a concert from his Pub during the Moor and Coast Festival in Whitby over our May bank holiday and or on a Sunday from the Pubs Singers and Musicians Session. |
Subject: RE: Help: Paltalk Concerts From: bigchuck Date: 12 Apr 01 - 08:07 AM OK, the concerts will resume next week, beginning with myself (hopefully I'll be able to finish a song without coughing my lungs out by then), followed by MargaretV on April 26, and Grab on May 3. In addition, we may be able to do a couple of Sunday Afternoon/evening events soon. Stay tuned. Sandy |
