This it?

THE LORD MADE A HOBO OUT OF ME

The Lord made a Hobo out of me,
he took my soul and then he said at three.
I travel round and round and sing in every town,
the Lord made a Hobo out of me.

The Lord give me a big black train,
my home in sunshine and rain.
I lived my life of peace and do a wonna please,
the Lord made a Hobo out of me.

I throb at set at down and go to world
but dickend digest me my back here.
To my float that shuttle down and cold the southern bound
the Lord made a Hobo out of me.

The Lord made a Hobo out of me,
he took my soul and then he said at three.
I travel round and round and sing in every town,
the Lord made a Hobo out of me.

I throb that up and try of marriedland,
so as heat at down with neckend one.
But a good not take this train's on a call the next train,
the Lord made a Hobo out of me,
he took my soul and then he said at three,
the Lord made a Hobo out of me.

From here

Cheers!
Ian

Appears some MONDEGREENS crept into the transcription!

"Set It Free!" vs Said At Three????As I recall---

among others...

I throb that up and try of marriedland,

so as heat at down with neckend one.

But a good not take this train's on a call the next train,

I throb at set at down and go to world

but dickend digest me my back here.

To my float that shuttle down and cold the southern bound

the Lord made a Hobo out of me.

Will bump these lines against the
Late Boxcar Willie's version---

In the late 1930s I saw as many as 200 hoboes a day, but never heard one sing.

Getting near - it's amazing the way we hear things when we transcribe from a recording!

I wonder how much those "original" folk songs are represented with todays renditions? with all that passing along by word of mouth/half heard songs padded out etc.

thanks to all so far...

Pete

Here's my transcription from a recording at YouTube. (The song begins at 1:36.)

THE LORD MADE A HOBO OUT OF ME
As sung by Boxcar Willie

CHORUS: The Lord made a hobo out of me.
He took my soul and then he set it free.
I travel round and round and I sing in ev'ry town.
Yes, the Lord made a hobo out of me.

The Lord gave me a big black train,
My home in the sunshine and rain.
I live a life of ease and I do what I please.
Yes, the Lord made a hobo out of me.

I thought I'd settle down and go to work,
But diggin' ditches makes my back hurt,
So I threw that shovel down and I caught the southern bound.
Yes, the Lord made a hobo out of me. CHORUS

I thought that I would try the married life,
So I settled down with a naggin' wife,
But I couldn't take the strain, so I caught the next train.
Yes, the Lord made a hobo out of me. CHORUS TWICE

Yes, the Lord made a hobo out of me.
