Can anyone recommend some current groups or individuals doing Hungarian folk music? I know about Marta Sebestyen and Muszikas, but am having difficulty finding others. I saw a terrific group called Mak Virag (sp?) several years ago but don't know that they have any recordings available. Thanks. Margaret

There is a great group called Sebo Ensemble. I have two CDs from them -- one , recorded in 1980, is called "Hungarion Folk Music" and was put out by Rounder Records (#5005) in 1993. The other was recorded in 1978 and is called "La Hongrie, Musiques a danser" and was put out by Arion (#64415) in 1997. The group was founded and led by Ferenc Sebo and also included Peter Eri, who is a member of Muszikas.

I saw a group called Harmonia at the Philadelphia folk festival last year. They play a mix of tunes from Hungary,Romania,Ukrane,Slovakia and the Balkans. I seem to recall they were based in Millwaukee? Not sure though.

Band members are,Walt Mahovlich,accordian & clarenet.

Alexander Fedoriouk,cimbalom.

Marko Dreher,voilin.

Andrei Pidkivka,Panflute,sopilka.

Adam Good,bass.

Beata Begeniova, vocals.

A very energetic band.

Unfortunately, that's all the info they provided in the PFF program & I couldn't find this particular Harmonia when I did a search.

Good luck,Ron.

Probably not answering your question about current groups but one of my favourites was Kolinda, who were formed in the mid 70's. Listening to their CDs, I still find them fresh.

We've had a thread on Anathea (click) running since January, 1997 - and we still haven't got the whole story behind this Hungarian folk song. If you come across any more information about the song, please post it in the "Anathea" thread.

Here are some links to check: I'd love to find books or other material that would help me explore Hungargian folk music. Any suggestions?

Marta Sebestyen has been a favorite for a long time, as has Kolinda. I was very impressed by a singer on the HER SONG cd, a compilation of music from around the world-- her name is Iren Lovasz and the song is called Harvest. From an album called ROSEBUDS IN A STONEYARD on Erdenklang Musikverlag. Have not had time to look for the album yet though...

Sorry, folks, I don't know why it suddenly posted a second copy of my last post more than 10 minutes after I sent it!

Liland
There was a third copy I deleted as well. I have no idea why some messages get posted multiple times, but it happens to a lot of people. --JoeClone

I've had a listen at Amazon to the Sebo Ensemble and to Iren Lovasz, and really like the sound of them both. Iren Lovasz has a beautiful voice. I also heard Taraf de Haidouks --- very neat stuff indeed, though in fact they're Romanian, not Hungarian... Joe, I'll keep my eyes and ears open for info. on "Anathea." Thank you all very much for your help. Margaret

You might be interested in Okros. There's a site with some info on them here. Also, there's a cd review for a couple of cds, one by them, here.

I saw them together with Tarif de Haidouks. "Neti", who is listed as playing with Okros on the cd reviewed at that site, was playing with Tarif then.

Margaret, they aren't a Hungarian folk group, but my brother's band Mandolirium has a couple of cuts on their CD, Unstrung Heroes that might interest you, particularly the Hungarian folktune, Arpad's Guz. You can download a sample of the song from Mandolirium's Homepage

Harmonia, mentioned above, will be at the Old Songs Festival in June (see current thread on Old Songs Fest for info and chat).
