Subject: Help: Hungarian Folk Music? From: Margaret V Date: 07 Apr 01 - 01:24 AM Can anyone recommend some current groups or individuals doing Hungarian folk music? I know about Marta Sebestyen and Muszikas, but am having difficulty finding others. I saw a terrific group called Mak Virag (sp?) several years ago but don't know that they have any recordings available. Thanks. Margaret |

I have two CDs from them -- one , recorded in 1980, is called "Hungarion Folk Music" and was put out by Rounder Records (#5005) in 1993. The other was recorded in 1978 and is called "La Hongrie, Musiques a danser" and was put out by Arion (#64415) in 1997. The group was founded and led by Ferenc Sebo and also included Peter Eri, who is a member of Muszikas. John Peekstok |

They play a mix of tunes from Hungary,Romania,Ukrane,Slovakia and the Balkans. I seem to recall they were based in Millwaukee? Not sure though. Band members are,Walt Mahovlich,accordian & clarenet. Alexander Fedoriouk,cimbalom. Marko Dreher,voilin. Andrei Pidkivka,Panflute,sopilka. Adam Good,bass. Beata Begeniova, vocals. A very energetic band. Unfortunately,that's all the info they provided in the PFF program & I couldn't find this particular Harmonia when I did a search. Good luck,Ron. |

I was very impressed by a singer on the HER SONG cd, a compilation of music from around the world-- her name is Iren Lovasz and the song is called Harvest. From an album called ROSEBUDS IN A STONEYARD on Erdenklang Musikverlag. Have not had time to look for the album yet though... |

Iren Lovasz has a beautiful voice. I also heard Taraf de Haidouks --- very neat stuff indeed, though in fact they're Romanian, not Hungarian... "Neti", who is listed as playing with Okros on the cd reviewed at that site, was playing with Tarif then. |
