For those seasoned harmonica players among you...there may be yet one more lesson to learn... From my college-student brother who plays harmonica: "I went to math class this morning an then did spanish homework. Then I tooted around on my harmonica for a while and noticed that one hole was not giving a clear tone...I tried to suck all the dust out but it just buzzed a whole bunch. So, I opened up the casing to figure out what was wrong. Couldn't see anything, until I lifted up the reed...and there saw a dried up fly body! The damned thing had crawled in there, died, and dried up. Just to think I was trying my hardest to pull air through that hole! Anyway, after I got over my surprise, I crushed him with a paper clip and got the stuff out and now the harp works fine."

I have the same concerns with my concertina, but fortunately, the reed pan is enclosed and I don't think a fly could get in there. I remember the first time a reed got stuck (it's only happened twice). I was afraid to open the instrument up for fear I'd ruin something. But I did open it, and just gently popped the stuck reed open. Simple.

(At least the fly wasn't doing the breaststroke)

Margo, have you ever noticed thos sealed light covers in bathrooms, toilets etc., that are full of flies??

I can never work out how they get in there either.

Cheers

Bugsy

I got my moustache stuck in the slide of a chromatic iron once. Never played one since!

And there's the ones with wooden bodies that swell up until it's not so much a harmonica, more of a file.

My brother has a moustash, too, but he never mentioned getting it stuck in his harmonica though.

It was funny just yesterday, I was playing around on my harmonica, thinking about that fly story, and saying to myself: surely there isnt a fly in this one, no chance. I turned it upside down and rapped it on the table.

A tiny, fuzzy, WORM fell out. :o(

not kidding either... Cheers, Dixie

Could you keep them in plastic ziplock bags when they're not in use (after they've had a chance to dry out) to keep them pesky critters out, or would that do them some kind of harm?

That's a good idea Carol! I'll try that some day. Cheers, Dixie
