When I'm a man, my plan, will be to marry you.

Does anyone know to which song this line belongs?

BS

I'll be your sweetheart and if you will be mine
All my life I'll be your valentine
Bluebells I've gathered, take them and be true
And when I'm a man my plan will be to marry you.

The verse goes something like;

Last night I saw two lovers in a garden
A tender lad and lass with golden hair
They looked as sweet as honey in a bee hive
And so I stood and watched that youthfull pair
The young lad blushing gave the lass a kiss
And tenderly he whispered this

I'll be your sweetheart if you will be mine
All my life I'll be your valentine
Bluebells we'll gather take one and be true
And when I'm a man my plan will be to marry you

Great.

Thanks Bill\Sables & Bert.

I'm trying to learn some of the songs my mother used to sing.

I.E. I'll take you home again Kathleen. I'll be your sweetheart. (If that is the correct title. Let me call you sweetheart. Now is the hour.

I'm only a mediocre guitarist but if anyone can help with chords that are not too difficult, then I would be grateful.

Bill

Subject: Lyr Add: I'LL BE YOUR SWEETHEART (Harry Dacre)
From: MGM·Lion
Date: 06 Nov 11 - 01:21 AM

"I'll Be Your Sweetheart" words.music Harry Dacre ~ 1899.

I'LL BE YOUR SWEETHEART Harry Dacre (aka Frank Dern aka Henry Decker 1860 - 1922) in 1899
Ann Breen (Also recorded by others, as yet unknown)

I'll be your sweetheart If you will be mine
All my life I'll be your valentine
Bluebells I'll gather Keep them and be true
When I'm a man, my plan Will be to marry you

One day I saw two lovers in a garden
A little boy and girl with golden hair
At first I thought of asking for their pardon
With second thoughts I watched the youthful pair

The boy, all blushing, gave the maid a kiss
And tenderly he whispered this

I'll be your sweetheart If you will be mine
All my life I'll be your valentine
Bluebells I'll gather Keep them and be true
When I'm a man, my plan Will be to marry you

I'll be your sweetheart If you will be mine
All my life I'll be your valentine
Bluebells I'll gather Keep them and be true
When I'm a man, my plan Will be to marry you

Sweet memories. Growing up I heard songs like this all the time from my mother, aunties and Grandma. No family party was complete without such songs. Two Little Girls in Blue, Comrades, Rose of No Man's Land, Marta, Miner's Dream of Home (New Year), and for laughs The Old Sow, My Brother Sylvest.

Ah, yes, Burl. My Uncle Alec would bring tears to our eyes with "Only a beautiful picture In a beautiful golden frame"; though his brother Uncle Dave would always bring us back down to earth with Harry Champion's "A little bit of cucumber".

But, oh dear me, we digress ...

Likewise Roy. Keep the Homefires burning, Daisy, Jesus bids us Shine, Shall we gather at the River, Hey Lads are you coming out (not a gay anthem!), The Baby's name, Good Bye Dolly Grey - so many more.

Mike, Al, you bring me more memories. Only a bird in a gilded cage, Meet me tonight in dreamland, A voice in the old village choir, Don't change the old love for the new,The old rustic bridge, Down by the old mill stream, Moonlight bay. My Uncle Sid used to sing the Cucumber Song, and my mam loved Dolly Grey because her name was Dolly Harris. In later years Hello Dolly became her favourite song.

I had a bad nights sleep last night so got up extra early and started reading Mudcat. I'm glad I did, even thoug I am a little bit tearful through some of the memories evoked here.

Another of Uncle Alec's ♥breakers, tho of a somewhat different period/genre, was Cole Porter's Miss Otis Regrets.

Drift ~ but interesting story. Heard once on a radio programme about Cole Porter that he was at a lunch party when topic of his speed in songwriting came up. His hostess bet him he couldn't write a song in an hour about the subject of a note she had just received but she hadn't opened yet; it was from a friend apologising that she couldn't make the lunch. 'I must have a reason,' said Porter. 'Oh, just say she's dead,' the hostess replied. The result was Miss Otis regrets.
