Heard once on a radio programme about Cole Porter that he was at a lunch party when topic of his speed in songwriting came up. His hostess bet him he couldn't write a song in an hour about the subject of a note she had just received but she hadn't opened yet; it was from a friend apologising that she couldn't make the lunch. 'I must have a reason,' said Porter. 'Oh, just say she's dead,' the hostess replied. The result was Miss Otis regrets. ~M~ |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: When I'm a man, my plan, will From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 06 Nov 11 - 02:27 AM Mike, Al, you bring me more memories. Only a bird in a gilded cage, Meet me tonight in dreamland, A voice in the old village choir, Don't change the old love for the new,The old rustic bridge, Down by the old mill stream, Moonlight bay. My Uncle Sid used to sing the Cucumber Song, and my mam loved Dolly Grey because her name was Dolly Harris. In later years Hello Dolly became her favourite song. I had a bad nights sleep last night so got up extra early and started reading Mudcat. I'm glad I did, even thoug I am a little bit tearful through some of the memories evoked here. |

Keep the Homefires burning, Daisy, Jesus bids us Shine, Shall we gather at the River, Hey Lads are you coming out (not a gay anthem!), The Baby's name, Good Bye Dolly Grey - so many more. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: When I'm a man, my plan, will From: MGM·Lion Date: 06 Nov 11 - 02:03 AM Ah, yes, Burl. My Uncle Alec would bring tears to our eyes with "Only a beautiful picture In a beautiful golden frame"; though his brother Uncle Dave would always bring us back down to earth with Harry Champion's "A little bit of cucumber". But, oh dear me, we digress ... ~M~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: When I'm a man, my plan, will From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 06 Nov 11 - 01:49 AM Sweet memories. Growing up I heard songs like this all the time from my mother, aunties and Grandma. No family party was complete without such songs. Two Little Girls in Blue, Comrades, Rose of No Man's Land, Marta, Miner's Dream of Home (New Year), and for laughs The Old Sow, My Brother Sylvest. |
