Several years ago I heard a live solo version (single guitar and male vocal) of the Eric Von Schmidt song "Joshua Gone Barbados". It was played in an uptempo style with great acoustic guitar licks and I have been unable to find out who recorded this version. I know the following artists have recorded the song-most in a slow calypso style (and it is none of them)-Bob Dylan, Eric Von Schmidt, Sally Timms & Jon Langford, Mother Vineyard's Jug Band, Brendan Croker,Johnny Cash and Tom Rush. Does anyone know of any other versions?

Martin Simpson did it on 'Special Agent', but that's a slow version too.

Howie Bursen did a great version, on banjo I seem to remember. Years ago on his LP. Linda

on my Eric von Schmidt discography I have listed a few of those cover versions - maybe it's one of those not yet mentioned you're looking for (Hans Theesink, Buick 6, Greg Kihn, Dave van Ronk)?!?
(ACHTUNG: It's *big* file you'll have to open ;-)

Tom Rush. I say again, Tom Rush. To repeat, Tom Rush.

All else is folly.

Well Ric von Schmidt wrote the tune, based on incidents that happened while he was living on St. Vincent around 1960. He confessed that he took some poetic license -- no one actually got killed in the uprising. Last time I heard him sing it he did it in a slow, lilting tempo.

Ton Rush's version is great. So is Eric Von Schmidt's and Dave Van Ronk's. My favorite, though, is Johnny Cash's featuring bass harmony from Hoyt Axton.
